Top Chinese sailor trying to set San Francisco to Shanghai sailing record disappears off coast of Hawaii

A 50-year-old Chinese man trying to set a record by #sailing from #San Francisco to Shanghai, China by himself is missing at sea.

U.S. Coast Guard officials said Wednesday after getting word that Guo Chuan had not been heard from in 24 hours, they sent a H-130 Hercules aircraft based out of Hawaii's Oahu island looking for Chuan and his 97-foot super trimaran, called the Qingdao China, which at last word had been reported 620 miles northwest of Oahu. Chuan’s boat was spotted, but he was not seen on board.

Chuan was trying to sail from San Francisco to Shanghai in 20 days.
Chuan had sailed out of San Francisco on Oct. 18, with the goal of making it from San Francisco to Shanghai, a sailing distance of more than 8,000 miles, in 20 days. If he had completed the journey in 20 days he would have beaten the previous record by one day.
