North Haltons Carola Englert and her husband Elmar spent a year preparing and sailing on Ashanti, their CS 36T sailboat; they traveled from Ontario to Florida, the Bahamas and back to Florida.
To sail south, the couple had to abandon house and family, and risk storms and gales to traverse the tumultuous Great Lakes to Florida and the Bahamas. They wondered whether their boat and 33-year marriage would survive.
Englart shares their exciting and sometimes dangerous escapades sailing south through Ontario’s September storms. Her articles and photography have been featured in magazines, such as The Port Hole and Sideroads.
Her vibrant photographs and witty, heart-warming journals describe the important and historical places they visited, along with their personal impact.
She also provides advice and lessons learned, along with a wealth of resources to help you prepare and stay organized for your own expeditions.
Englert and her husband have been teaching various Canadian power and sale squadron courses for years. They’ve been sailing and spending every winter for the last 18 years in Florida. They are “all-kinds-of-weather” sailors, never shying away from challenges.
They also won the Lemon Hart National Award for saving the life of a boater whose boat burned completely.
The couple made the lifestyle possible by running various businesses over three decades.
The book’s proceeds will go to ALS. It’s available for purchase for $26.95. Go to http://ashantisailssouth.com/ for details.
