Security camera catches lightning strike on sailboat

May 11 (UPI) -- A boat parked at a Colorado marina sustained $10,000 worth of damage in a caught-on-camera lightning strike. [ Video ]

Sheldon Reese, manager of the North Shore Marina in Pueblo, said he was inside his home during a Monday evening storm when he heard a noise just outside.

"I heard a big boom -- and came out here and see what it was and, by golly, the sailboat got hit by lightning," Reese told reporters.

Security camera footage shows the lighting strike hit the boat's mast, sparking a fire.

"The first thing I'm looking at is there's gas right next to it, and I was like, 'We can't have this,'" Reese said.

The fire was extinguished and no one was injured. Reese said the damage to the boat was estimated at about $10,000.

Hi all! I just wanted to introduce us. My wife and I have been living aboard in the Pacific Northwest for a year now. We try to go cruising as much as possible but are new and are mostly fair weather sailors. We also have a YouTube channel if anyone is interested. We love following other people's journeys as well. Glad to be here and hope we can learn more and socialize with more sailors.
