detained on sailboat

Two German nationals were detained in Chania, on the island of Crete, on Tuesday, after coast guard officials found antiquities and diving equipment on their sailboat during a check.

The two suspects, a woman and a man will explain how the items came into their possession to Greek authorities. The sailboat was towed to the port of Chania, while the Germans spent the night at the Coast Guard headquarters.

More specifically, yesterday, the 1st Port Department of the Central Harbor Authority of Chania was informed of the possibility of diving by a German-flagged flag of the I / O flag "CONTENIUS EAGLE", in order to retrieve archaeological finds in the sea area '' CHOLIRISI KOLYMVARIOU '' Chania.

At that point, the patrol went to check out the tip. The Patrol crew  identified the vessel with two German occupants, as well as findings of a Roman-Byzantine period within it.

Subsequently, sixteen (16) sections of cultural goods of the ancient period were found in  further inspection that was carried out on the vessel.

The  archaeological finds, the vessel itself , the diving equipment and the electronic devices were seized from the Port Authority of the Central Harbor Authority of Chania, which carried out the preliminary investigation.

Note :  Comments by local divers online suggested that  the detainment of the tourists was not necessary .  They claim to often find various items in the sea.  That doesnt mean that  the  German sailors were plotting to be involved in  organized crime.
