A man is in a moderate condition after his yacht ran aground

on rocks near Motukoranga Island off the Coromandel.

The Auckland Rescue Helicopter was called about 7am on Tuesday after the man's yacht foundered on rocks.

He was located by an activated personal locator beacon.

The man managed to deploy a life raft, make it to shore and take shelter in the bush.

In trying conditions, due to the weather and location, the man was winched from the scene by the helicopter crew.

He was flown to Thames Hospital in a moderate condition.
