those of you that don't know me my name
is Justin three years ago I had the
dream to sail around the world I'm 31
years old and from the United States and
this is my story well at least the
beginning
in September 2013
I bought a 1966 albergue 30 out of
Canada with the intent to sail around
the world the only problem was I really
didn't know much about sailing at the
time
at first I lived on the boat for six
months and began preparing for the
indefinite adventure leaving my past
behind my belongings and even my cap
year it was not too keen on me leaving
this was the same type of boat that Eve
Janine sailed around the world in the
late 70s so I knew it was a very solid
boat although he was de masted in the
Indian Ocean
he finished his circumnavigation in the
early eighties
I worked on the boat almost every day
for six months before I left upgrading
electronics fixing the standing rigging
and I even took some sailing classes to
help me prepare for my journey I have
been asked a lot what made you want to
do this it's been an important question
to answer as much for myself as anyone
else the truth is though I wanted to
feel alive and I couldn't think of a
better way to do that then attempt to
sail solo around the world
across the Pacific Ocean from Mexico to
the Marquesas last April in 26 days and
since then have explored numerous
islands and atolls in French Polynesia I
realized this trip is just beginning
which is why I'm planning on continuing
west after the cyclone season passes to
try and reach the Indian Ocean by the
end of 2016
so far I have dealt with numerous boat
repairs including to haul outs this past
year I made a number of necessary
upgrades such as replacing the wind vane
preparing the rudder repainting the
entire boat and even sewing up the sails
that have begun to tear apart
last August I was in the boatyard making
preparations to continue west but I had
a major setback when a car struck me on
my skateboard and left me with a broken
left arm followed two days later by a
concussion and bruised tendons in my
foot from falling off the scaffolding in
the yard this was the same wrist I broke
in five places just two years earlier so
it was important for me to heal properly
now that I am back on the boat after
obtaining my captain's license back in
New Zealand I'm feeling excited and
confident about the next part of my
journey I still have almost 20,000 miles
to complete my circumnavigation and need
to time everything right this year I am
planning on leaving Polynesia at the end
of March to head west to try and reach
South Africa by the end of 2016 shaky
and I'll still be the city just be out
here yeah and I say he because the truth
always worse we were hardwired
