hi I'm your host Terry J and in this
video we're going to discuss building
cribbing boxes for the Erickson
restoration project during the
restoration of this Erickson 27 sailboat
I found the need that I have to raise
the boat and trailer as a complete unit
so that it can be supported safely and
then I'll be able to add a third axle to
this two axle system so in order to do
this I needed to design a set of
cribbing boxes so using a software
package called SolidWorks
which is 3d design and modeling tool I
created a set of CAD drawings in this
binder right here we're going to be
using those to construct cribbing boxes
to construct our 16 inch square cribbing
blocks we will need to cut a whole bunch
of identical pieces so to do so what
I've done is I've built a miter table
out of an old concrete form I have this
pre-cambrian Ryobi miter saw and I
needed to get a set of risers this Ryobi
saw is about three and a half inches the
same size as a 2x4 so it was easy to
build a couple of risers so we can
support our artwork and make some nice
square cuts on our Crippin boxwood the
other thing I needed was a stop this
stop has been measured out so that it is
exactly the 16.9 four inches that I need
to build one identical piece of wood
so each 2x6 makes five usable pieces for
the crib and to make a bottom the middle
and a top we need 15 pieces therefore
the three two by sixes required to build
a single cribbing blocks so let's cut a
few so this is the waste piece that
we're going to get we're going to get a
number of them from this project the
crib just so that you can see what it is
going to look like when it's done
it's basically set up like this and laid
out in this format right here it's kind
of really hard to get this all aligned
up there's going to be a lot of
measuring to do it's going to be a lot
of work I don't want to do that so what
I did is I designed a jig and we're
going to build a jig so that we can
quickly and easily assembly this all the
woods out in the right portion before
the next card comes and then get it
ready to be nailed down

there's going to be a mountain of wood
here
I own thing really safety first

that was cool
so this is how many Jenga blocks this
table and support that was good I was
kind of happy that I rescued that
well that's all the wood cutting so now
what we need to do is build a jig I've
designed a jig and we're going to cut it
up from a spare - bye for now

looks like this the we're going to need
some of the same sizes the 430 s so
we'll continue using our stop that we
have and we're going to cut three pieces
for our jig okay so now that those are
done the next thing that I have to do is
we have to cut three more pieces but
there are a lot smaller they are I
checked my plans book they're 200
there's two of them that are 236 so
we'll just use the old measuring tape
236
and we'll just snack this one on top
buttered up against the saw so we'll
need those and then the last one is 196
millimeters long and that's everything
we need for that so once we finish
cutting the cribbing bolts pieces Loren
and Adam sort of figured out that
they're kind of a good
Jenga arrangement what we did is we
played Jenga for a bit and then we
continued recording this video you want
to see how the Django works you should
maybe have a look at one of the other
videos that we have in our list and
it'll be everybody playing Jenga also
the plans for Jenga are also included on
the website so you can download those
now that we got the pieces cut for our
assembly jig 4:30 what we're going to do
is put it together now I was originally
going to nail this with a Binford but
I've decided to go with screwing it down
with 2-inch screws so to put this fit
together is relatively simple what we're
going to do is I'm actually going to
screw it to my board because it'll be
handy for it to be held down while I put
the pieces together

that's basically our assembly jig
completed so how does it work
simple oh that's why as it goes like
this let's see how offices it's been so
long since I designed it that I forgot
okay so how does the jig work we're
supposed to slide it in like this put
this like that put this like that and we
have one part now that we've got the
assembly jig build let's build some
middle sections of the cribbing box they
basically go in here here and we're
ready to go with the Binford set on auto
mode we go and we have built a cribbing
blocks section isn't that fantastic
beautiful
now that we're finished are all the
Middle's that we need what we're going
to do is disassemble our disconnect our
jig from this unit and we're going to
build some comps and bottoms the top is
easy to do all we need to do is put down
two pieces on the outside one top to
build a bottom we take a middle and we
flip it upside down and we have a bottom
piece build how does the cribbing box
work now well we put the bottom down
throw a top on top of the middle and
there we go but we have enough here to
build six cribbing boxes for our trailer
and this is going to lift it in our next
video we're going to be utilizing these
cribbing boxes to stabilize the Erickson
trailer behind me I hope you found the
