this episode of chuffed Adventures we
help return a critically endangered sea
turtle back into the wild and continue
tackling the dinghy project
[Music]
[Music]
so it's 6:30 in the morning we got a
call outside about a turtle who has a
fishhook stuck in her mouth and the
nearest turtle hospital is about eight
hours away so the biologists are hoping
we might be able to get it out and she
can be released right away which would
be really nice so head in there this
morning should be fun I'm hoping we can
get it out with relative ease but we'll
see we packed up our surgical and
medical supplies and awaited the arrival
of our friends Phoebe and Pippy
[Music]
Playa Blanca is located at the top end
of the OSA Peninsula and it took us
around 20 minutes to arrive at Pepe's
speedy little boat Playa Blanca is only
a tiny village with around 500 residents
but it attracts tourists year-round with
amazing ecotourism opportunities it is
also the location of a latin-american
sea turtles group that does research and
rescues on sea turtles in the OSA
Peninsula you don't think so
yeah - - for the jacket we are ten what
just wait for breath one of the attorney
I'm with Hammond was working the were
there as well so they saw the turtle
being cut so they call me out right away
as they need the family caught turtle
I'm just gonna do one like a stick in
there yeah we have poly path yeah it
might just go to the muscle with stepped
away
it's so much easier to get hooked in and
then get out the fishhook had become
embedded in the wall of the esophagus
around seven centimeters down the throat
which allowed us to visualize and grab
the hook bones that run here mm-hmm just
is really questionnaires
and I'm feeling this it turns out there
was actually two hooks lodged in there
and although it was a tight work space
we needed many hands to help this little
Hawksbill was under anesthesia but
without gas anaesthetic to make sure it
was maintained properly we didn't want
any unexpected surprises like lost
fingers I manipulated the hook to work
out where to make my incision from the
outside of the neck to the inside I was
trying to incise over the barbed of the
hook so it could be removed which
reduces the internal trauma compared to
simply trying to pull the hook back out
so now I just need to try and get the
bar that's the hunter and its flashing
red which means it's just recording yeah
thanks please of course there's another
one in there I think but once I have
this quiet it is that the barbed side
you couldn't
might be able to stick
one breathe scale even better huh
I met a girl the other day he's got a
she's an artisan she's got a tattoo on
the inside of her finger that's and just
it's 2 inches it's like a little ruler
on her finger always using it good
things for scaling she's like I always
forget my ruler or it just I've always
got this you can see the size of the
hook mm-hmm yeah that one's got rust on
it and looks like there's a bit of
infection kind of around it make sure
I've got ahold of it yet actually my
team you got to pull that one because
it's got my BOB Joey you might find you
can actually just pull it and I just let
that that was my girl the hooks were
around 5 centimeters long and deeply
embedded in the muscle of this turtle's
neck I first had to suture close the
esophagus then the muscle and finally
the skin
is using absorbable suture material so
should be released really quickly
[Music]
administered antibiotics pain relief and
anti-inflammatory injections which would
be repeated the next afternoon to help
her on the road to recovery she was also
quite dehydrated so he administered
fluid solution with added glucose for
energy into the selamat otherwise known
as the abdominal cavity of turtles while
that was kicking in and her anesthetic
was wearing off John had a quick game of
footy with our youngest volunteer the
Hawksbill turtle is critically
endangered so every single one we can
help and return to the wild makes a huge
difference to the population this little
turtle is only a juvenile and has many
years ahead we placed her or him into
the recovery tank with a small amount of
water while the general anesthetic wore
off this little guy will be returned to
the wild in two days after the
latin-american sea turtle team ensures
that he's swimming well in the tank and
is recovered fully we then went out to
celebrate a successful day and ended up
eating lunch with a crazy and a soccer
[Music]
interrupted breakfast it was then time
to return to chuffed and the dingy
project stay tuned until the end of the
episode to see the beautiful release
Joel was finishing up the sanding on the
inside of the dinghy and I was also
learning the de building was frequently
interrupted with coffee breaks and chats
with everyone who passed by the dinghy
was literally stopping people on the
streets to come have a look at it
[Music]
tapes in
yeah I tried to tape probably that long
he said you grab a little thread and
pull it and I said of fine to it to make
you a straight line
yeah
take money little strands
pull it out so you have a salon and then
you can cut along the lon
it's great idea that's what that's
what's called tape for to line yeah
that's like a hypoxic let me get some
clothes
[Applause]
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
we filled the seams with epoxy to remove
any air bubbles before laying down the
strips of fiberglass doctors tape
[Music]
we use two different batches of the same
brand of hardener and somehow ended up
with one setting better than the other
but eventually they both hardened up and
Joel was at the Itchy work of sanding
once again
[Music]
and now we'd like you all to sit back
and enjoy this absolutely amazing moment
[Music]
