the idea of putting together a video log
series of of a catamaran build has been
a coined by civil their friends and
family I think it's very important to
document such a major project in my life
and and at the end of the day you know
who knows you might learn something you
definitely won't learn anything from
maybe you might pick up some hints and
tips as we go along but it's quite an
interesting story it's a major project
it's something I'm not really sure I
should have taken on however I'm into it
and things are getting very real
it all started quite some time ago where
my wife Janet and I were paddling down a
local river system and and I got these
amazing catamarans I mean it clearly
does the most beautiful beautiful craft
and we were suggesting that we might
want to buy Caribbean a four-wheel drive
and tour around Australia and we've been
doing that for some time however Janet
sort of gave me the green light to look
into the possibility of a of a cruising
catamaran this is like a leaving the
gate open for a dog that just wants to
get out I've went home immediately
months and months of research late-night
research you know 24 hours a day just
basically trying to work out what we
should be doing what we should be buying
and and ultimately a friend of ours and
a local fellow with a beautiful cat down
in there really suggested I might want
to try and build one so here this story
all came to pass once that got into my
head it was all over I then began
researching the idea of building a kit
building one from a plan and all those
options seemed open to us
you know that sort of research tends to
lead to other things we then went to the
Sydney Boat Show and investigated some
of these beautiful craft I mean we soon
realized that that's quite an expensive
outlay
I mean to purchase a new catamaran is
just way beyond our capabilities so Phil
you're all very dejected we drove the
three-hour time to Jervis Bay here in
the South Coast in New South Wales net
and basically after about half a dozen
beers I sat there with my bottom lip out
like very young upset that the dream was
shattered and and ultimately at about
1:30 in the morning clicked on eBay and
found a mold for a catamaran and and
didn't say much just click buy but
certainly gave it some serious thought
but I then ran upstairs dragged my poor
wife out of bed drag the down to my
computer and and she just shook her head
at me and she knew that it was all over
it was going to happen we purchased that
mold on eBay of a gentleman but it
happened to be in in Mid North
Queensland around about 18 hours drive
from where we are we then set about
working out how the hell we were going
to get that bastard down to Jervis Bay
and this is a 23 foot wide 40 foot long
30 tonne piece of composite towing and
some very sleepless nights didn't she
ultimately we we came up with a plan and
you'll see on the video I dragged my
poor brother-in-law Jimmy to Queensland
15 hours drive straight with the idea of
a subtle hint of her or temptation of a
holiday in mind for him yeah a bit of
boy is bonding to have a bit of a good
time together when we got there it spent
we spent five days framing and then 12
hours of solid grinding and welding to
cut it in half and by doing that we were
able to keep it
within the parameters of the wide-load
the sort of other regulations in New
South Wales and Queensland I think
you're only allowed to have them up to
three point three metres wide now we had
a boat that was six point seven meters
wide so we were touch over on one of
those we also investigate the idea of a
trucking company and we basically were
told where to go with the first couple
that we spoke to
however we were put onto a gentleman
called Terry burns who was without a
doubt the most amazing fellow he met us
on the site and he had in fact moved our
mold before when the the yachting
manufacturer that I owned it decided the
discard was put in his stories he had to
move the sticker and moved it onto our
property in front of this beautiful
waterfront view and this stinking
20-foot high behemoth sat right in front
of her window with a waterfront view so
she was more than happy to get rid of it
and couldn't help us more and sure we
thanks go out to you because she gave us
the opportunity to use your power or
drink a water bottle were there for the
five days and and yeah we were able to
sort of get it ready now when Terry came
out to the side he said you look like it
can do man Roxy and if you can be a
can-do man over you can do man too and
true to his word this guy got this thing
down to us in about three weeks three
weeks later that thing was sitting in
Jervis Bay now the funny thing is that I
heard Terry on the phone to his partner
on the day and he said I think we're
going to retire and this one honey and
and I think that means that it was going
to cost the earth well through to his
word he actually came through as quoted
with a little bit extra because I did
cut up a little bit why and we did get a
damage over Spade I was a very very
interesting day the day the think
through now there's absolutely - Sammis
came down the princess highway all the
way from Queens and it was a three day
road trip came we closed an hour
princess highway bridge the police were
really good and closed off the
southbound bridge and brought it across
one northbound bridge - to get it over
the show live in River and then down
into Jervis Bay so it's quite a story
it's now sitting in our you know factory
unit in the carpark in fact it is the
carpark and there's been much talk about
this
there's ugly arc of a thing that's
sitting in our factory we've you know
we're moving forward
quite a bit bit of time on now we're
about seven months into it so far and
there's a lot more to come so I hope you
enjoy the story this is this is the
beginning of a quite a very long story
so enjoy it
