you can agree with me that we found
enough of folly at the first sight maybe
on it maybe on a second we knew that
it's gonna cost us really a lot and and
I'm talking about money energy time we
needed to put in to make it better and
make it right go but we knew that if
this is for us and yeah it was it was
actually very contrary to what many
people might think it was actually
appealing the fact that it was neglected
and we actually had to put in a lot of
work and yes of course
and yes of course we could get it on a
much this on a much discounted price
because of that and we had a choice we
could have we could have put in more
money up front and buy a boat that was
effectively ready to sail or put in much
less money up front but then put a lot
more work and money for spare parts and
material and some labor to help us in
order to put pulley right back to its
right state so with all the tight
parameters that we set for ourselves to
buy a boat meaning it was supposed to be
comfortable fast and portable yeah that
was pretty much mix close to impossible
impossible to to meet but we got lucky
we found this one boat that that needed
some work and hence it was available for
significantly less but yet it was still
fast and comfortable so once we finally
found about we were actually very happy
to find it because there was a quite a
bit of time when we could not find
anything suitable it's not easy with the
with the set of parameters that we had
both in one place yeah so we traveled
all over you know it's expensive takes a
lot of money and it's even harder when
you fight five months pregnant jumping
on the dinghy
yeah so we found it
and
it's not like we fell in love and right
on the very first sight but as soon as
the wheels started turning in our head
it was basically very quickly we came to
the conclusion that wait a minute we can
have this boat at fairly good discounts
because it was in bad shape and it
needed a big discount and it needed a
lot of work but at the same time it
still was very good design very good
sailing boat and there and very
comfortable at the same time and why we
decided to buy this particular boat
because we bought it in Florida and our
plan was to take the boats and prepare
boats to cross the Atlantic to go to :
and put the boat in the shipyard in
Poland because we needed that the boat
required investment because it's a
different level when you want to bring
it up to a up to speed so it's
technically sound and safe to sail but
it's a completely different level when
you want it to work for years on end and
be completely well done very good idea
it was actually like that and you know
and you know the better we can afford to
make this investment in safe no one does
exactly that's exactly why we had such a
good position buying position because
because there would be nobody in the
u.s. interested even at the low price to
buy this boat because it required so
much work and labor is very expensive in
the US and hard to come by so and we did
a lot of work ourselves actually we did
all of the work ourselves in the US and
then we did some of the work in Poland
but we also had a lot of good people
help us with that and you know obviously
that was cents on the dollar when it
comes to labor costs so it was the only
way it made sense but why we why we
really like the idea of buying this boat
a boat that needed work was that we knew
that once we go through all this entire
going through the boat you know taking
it up completely apart and putting it
back together with all the right parts
and solutions was that we gonna know it
inside out and this is completely
priceless it's an
that will pay off for years and it
already did because now whenever
something breaks in this boat we know
what is it and we know where is it and
we know how to fix it it's so I joined
Bartok in Florida which kupaka I was 10
months and yes so we got almost one
month to prepare boats to cross the
Atlantic and it was like crazy mom 6 6
a.m. till 12 at night every day she was
feeding the IV so I don't die Wow
we're taking on in the car seat into the
Jeep and driving for the solar panels on
the top of the roof the car and then
yeah thanks I like this thanks thanks
Alexis our broker who lent us his old
old Ford Explorer that really worked
very well yeah we did put four giant
solar panels on top of that roof and
drove it from Fort Lauderdale and Anya
laminated some of the some of the holes
for the for the for the bolts to put it
on that on the roof so yeah that was one
of the first things we did it were so
we're so proud of it we're so proud of
it and we're still so proud of it
because they make so much electricity
hurry we replace you just said yeah all
the electronic systems were replaced
I bought entire new electronics for the
boat and all the electrical system has
been replaced to the batteries we did it
all a lot of things in there applets
saying yes not a great thing it was yeah
it was it was a great combination
because we knew we can buy a lot of
equipment at very good discount in the
US especially in that place where we
were in Fort Pierce there was a as this
boat yard which would salvage a lot of
parts in very good condition sometimes
frankly new parts but from other boats
and and we could buy them as very good
disconcert we bought everything that we
possibly needed for the boat
and not all of it we used right away but
we were going to use it in Poland during
the big refit but yet at the same time
when we went to Poland we could use the
advantage of less expensive labor while
having all this cheap equipment from
from the US so it was a perfect
combination for us it really was so we
did it we did it all we fixed it fixed a
boat to a point of a very good working
condition safe and sound
rate yeah that's the only thing we
really hired people for because I
respected the rigging and I was afraid
that two shrouds are gonna not survive
the trip hence we wouldn't either
so like I call these guys and and they
were really nice really good guys really
they knew what they're doing and it took
him one afternoon they replaced two
shrouds with stainless steel because we
had a carbon shrouds before and we made
it very safe we made what Julian yeah
yeah yeah
between electronics electrical yeah we
created we create we started started
doing off I think there was I think
there was a fight I think there was a
five minutes between the electronics and
electrical yeah it was a very tiring
moment for us because we were in a big
hurry because we wanted to leave as soon
as possible but you cannot you know you
could you cannot go with the boat not
hurt yes not an option I just imagine
for us a test drive was from Fort Pierce
in Florida which is close to Fort
Lauderdale to New York for most people
it's a big trip for us it was just a
test track just to see if the boat is
working properly and everything
yeah but finally we did it we did we
left four piers
snarf yeah we took it very easy it took
us six days to get to New York
well I mean there was some wind and then
there was no wind so you know we just
put it along a little bit on the engine
but it was it wasn't really safe I mean
nothing really broke we I noticed few
things that needed to be modified so in
New York we spent a week
weary provisions and change those few
things to new pieces of equipment and
and we went on our way to Ida France I
took a flight yeah how about Poland
because I didn't want to sail at that
moment I was pregnant few weeks pregnant
and yeah I didn't want to take poober
with me at that moment
so Bartok left with three people and now
you were sailing for two weeks two weeks
15 days to France and then and finally
you're right Poland yeah yeah so in
Poland in Poland yeah we put a boat on
there dry hmm in system in September
2014 we put it on the dry I mean and it
remained that way for pretty much
exactly 12 months we literally took
their own terrible apart we unscrewed
every single screw evolved everything of
those going for the deck we ripped out
an entire interior we read gel coated
the holes on the inside we redid the
entire interior we then in put put
everything back in on the new seals and
whatnot we made a lot of changes in the
rigging we yeah we created some new
sails yeah when we were going across the
Atlantic to France for the first week we
were we were going so fast it was
unbelievable we were doing upwards of
250 miles a day every single day
and then a second week the wind turn
behind us and it weakened and this boat
just would not go anywhere and it's both
just it was this really bad point of
sail there is no way to set the sails
properly and this is when this idea dawn
on me that for this particular condition
when we're crossing oceans and we have
wind behind us especially going west
when you're going from Canary Islands to
the Caribbean you have most of the winds
are from behind you it would be very
very good to have this job
and spinnaker just one round they sailed
that symmetrical that can catch a lot of
wind and not let it go and that's it
just sat and we made it we made an
important and and it proved to be
invaluable it was just amazing you could
go straight downwind with great speed
and great comfort at the same time
because you do you'd be doing close to
wave speed so I love it at the same
moment I was preparing our house to move
out after Julian was born so he was 2
month old yeah I needed to move out all
our things because we wanted to rent out
the house and it was a nice experience
for me because first I was so scared
oh my god what can I do how can I live
without my books you know my best music
albums my favorite furniture that I was
looking for many many years you know to
get it and and you know I was just
packing all the things and you know
deciding if it's garbage my parents
place birth experience play parties
parents place or both today I'm having
to keep Julian Cooper with me so it was
like a big challenge for me while while
while she was running a company and I
was working a full-time job yes we're
trying to make as much money we could
that moment yeah he like crazy I
remember I was sleeping for 3 or 4 hours
every night I think 5 breaks because the
kids were very young Julian was in two
months and she was
he was he was waking up you know so many
times and it requires a lot of attention
it was really really difficult for us
for me when you don't sleep so it's like
it's is difficult what but we finally
did it we move out we put our things to
the car it took 4 or 4 sedans you know
regular normal sized said Toledo right
that we my mom's car that we loaded up
for and I drove it alone to statue from
Warsaw and that was it and then and then
I actually you know supposedly did all
the stuff that we couldn't part with
right that we needed on the boat not
even that we couldn't part with so we
need another boat right and then the
next thing literally about two weeks
from from the point when we know about a
week from the point where we left Poland
we had a leak in the write about where
we had most of our winter clothes and
some of those some of the stuff that we
thought we needed well I guess what half
of the stuff that we thought we needed
went out the window when we've never
seen it again and we're happy with it
my sweaters my biggest conclusion after
preparing our life our life to move out
traditional house was that at the end I
realized that I don't need this space
and I don't at all because and how much
energy we normally spend on using and
maintenance maintain that peace well
acquiring first then then then worrying
about having and not losing them you
know and then most of the time we're not
using them at all so September 4th 2014
we finally left stretching
