Brian tell us about the journey we're
gonna head out quite a way to get around
the accelerations doing something might
be about 30 knots that's at the north of
the Palmer pop you ready
and then we'll turn to our course and
head to we're gonna aim for puncture I
think it's cool but we're not actually
going to that marina
we're already everything sty
that's the planet that way how many
miles have got de 254 and how many hours
roughly averaging at five knots 51 51
Alan goose I hope you'ii be there by
Friday Pony lunchtime would be nice
today
just that the Palmer sees pretty good
[Music]
drama
besides I'm invited to hang
yeah
[Music]
so what we don't stay right in we are
sailing but we're just trying to outrun
this rain cloud at the moment I don't
want to get wet full set sails are we've
been practicing our failings you still
pretty new on me we are heading way of
course I'm like the wind right angle see
say is okay quite nice actually
so two days might turn into three I
don't think he'll be free days I think
it'll be Friday night we get there
hopefully it's not bad beating into the
wind in the way I don't think that's too
bad
no I don't other people
[Music]
I see him coming from miles away
Ward's clarinet
yeah
[Music]
absolutely nothing surround us there's
no wind so it stopped sailing
these guys show up we had some friends
on board Adam and Amy and they wanted to
know what a lot of the ropes do on board
chassis there's actually no ropes on
board about they're called halyards and
sheets halyards are what hold their
sails up and sheets are what control the
shaft their sails on this side we have a
spinnaker one this is the halyard for
the light wind cell which is the cell at
the very front of our boat we have the
genoa and this is the halyard that holds
up to the gym so these ones go up this
is the main sheet so this controls the
boom which moves out and in depending on
where the wind is this is the bang that
controls the boom and it either lowers
or high as it so it flattens the sail
this is reef too we also have reef one
and roof three we use the roofs when
it's there's too much wind and we need
to make the sail less make the sound
smaller so we have three some boats have
two but that's what they are
we've got the outlaw that is a sheet
that runs all the way along the bottom
of the mainsail and we don't really use
that but it just keeps the the bottom of
the sail flat main halyard this is the
line we've got on the winch at the
moment this is what we use to raise the
mainsail we normally do it by hand and
then we chop the last bit because it's
really heavy but we've kept it on
because sometimes it slips down a bit
and we want the sail as tight as
possible and we have our tack line and
that we use we winch out when we get the
jib out and it unfurls the jib
and then we use it to control how much
do people have out an angle so 6 o'clock
we're going into our second night we've
had a good day sailing made up a few
miles but the wind has completely died
now we've got about 8 knots which is a
ain't no as a parent so we're making 4
knots of that wind we've got the main up
but we don't really think it's doing
much so we've got the motor on we've got
to get there really quite quickly
because there's a storm coming in on
Sunday the car wants to get there Friday
but we've had to come about 50 miles out
of our way and I went so it's not ideal
so we are having to motor but it would
love to sail but it's just not possible
with the storms that's predicted who
knows people actually come in we just
pass out so yeah bit rubbish but it's
beautiful these days quite good so we
can't really complain just see what
happens
we are 80 miles from Madeira
and go sailing because there's an
athlete's body not wind do that's more
evening I'd slow it down and sit-ups
outside material
until the early hours Saturday morning
don't approach is art you don't know
anything crap walks around
we don't know the marina's so yeah we
might come on just Southside tomorrow
night
go in first thing Saturday morning carts
getting there
yeah basically be there tomorrow evening
just shooting stars tonight pretty cool
bit chilly sun's just coming up and I've
been looking out all night for boats on
the AOS and their navigation lights and
there was nothing and I've just seen
this guy on the horizon with no lights
on and no I is that got a bit a bit
scary in the middle of the night
[Music]
we are nailing it's not too great 3.72
and we have eight point seven knots of
wind
[Music]
we're just coming to the end of our
crossing we've got about two miles left
this is Madeira
[Music]
so in pancha marina we just come out to
have a bit of an explore the way that's
not very good it's really windy so you
can't go out sailing so I've just said
to Fay look at this cool looking done
Faiers then said it's a turkey now I
don't know what it is well I know it's
probably not an aquatic turkey well if
anyone does know last night I think
that's the turkey duck a turkey duck
yeah very happy to be
we are it's nice but expensive very well
it's more expensive than the Canaries
were like double guards you can get out
to the top of the mountain it's 16 euros
for a roundtrip and 11 euros for one way
we wanted to do this morning but we
didn't
[Music]
so we've just been walking on the back
streets of Madeira to see explore and
hum we've just come down this street
here adjacent to it and there is soaks
in every garden and some of them are
trying to get over the walls to pop in
like huge guard dogs very scary to me
these house had like free guard dogs in
their room they seemed really boiling
you're right in your paws
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
which is that fun charm arena we've been
here about four days really lovely but
we're going to lose some courage
muchacho we think but if you obey there
is a marina there but it's a commercial
port so just heart go in there we're
gonna anchor hopefully this won't be
that bad the winds predicted to be
fairly hard for next few days but Lucy
just raised domain and got the jib out
and i'll speedrun what's our speed flat
six between five and six knots and the
windmill between 8 and 11 so we're not
doing bad going into the wind which
isn't our favorite we just might run
into the anchorage where we're going to
be for definitely tonight maybe a few
days
it looked really beautiful but we can
see your helmet on flight caps out the
front the front of the little Sally pit
and so we're not sure if it's actually
gonna be that protected so we're going
and look so we made in drop the anchor
and this place that's really really cool
there's our friends on board Sheila
[Music]
so I'll explain what just happened
Simone is Ravana on Sina and Simone was
out quite surfing with he's not with
someone but it was someone else out
there sorry wind surfing and the wind
changed direction and they couldn't get
back in so Anna got a phone call from
Simone asking for help and we went as
well when we got to Simone the other guy
had drifted around the corner so I went
to go and get him and dragging dragging
her the other guy back turning him back
our engine overheated and cut out so
then Simone and Anna had to come and
rescue us and their engine is a free
horsepower I think it's a free
horsepower but by now it's it's got them
on their boat it's towing our tender and
the guy with the to wind surfs in the
water so it wasn't doing much and the
wind was pushing us onto the rocks
just raise our anchor and go and get
them is there too close to the rocks
as they were trying to pull us as we
were trying to head off the rocks their
engine started cutting out this is
phenomenal
I think both tenders have run out of
petrol so we started rowing with the
engine for as long as it would last and
then we was just about to make a
decision to Simone and Ana to come back
and get their boat to come back and
grabbers I'm not sure if that would have
been a good idea to be very close to the
rocks I'm not sure the angle would have
got up in time and what happened so then
I took the I had the cap off of our
engine to help it cool down it started
and then as I started going the guy fell
off of his through the - to windsurfing
boards are now together on a ripe and
he's fallen under and got stuck on there
windsurfing boards is if his day wasn't
bad enough
anyway he then got out we released from
them we come back dropped off the
windsurfing boards and the Portuguese or
Madeira and guy and then headed back out
to help these guys and now we're all
back safe and sound having a drink and
Simone's just taken the guy to the port
over there celebrating the only live
yeah see you guys anyway faster chill in
here it just shows you gotta be a bit
careful even if you go now rescue
someone goes in you could end up needing
rescuing yourself today we're going to
Porto Santo which they island just north
of Madeira we're leaving from machito in
Madeira it's a small little town
of the fishing town the wind and waves
aren't perfect so we've got a head north
east and the wind is coming from the
northwest it's predicted to gusts up to
25 knots sitting around 16 normally
that's quite a big range I think we'll
probably go on a reef to move the
apparent would be looking over 13 hours
the swell maybe 10 foot but once we get
around the Cape we can have a look and
assess the situation from there it's
about 32 miles and we as we're hoping to
do it in six hours that's averaging
around five knots but with the wind
you may go faster but with the swell it
may make us go slower
depends how steep tower and how close
together they are and this guy's the
interesting day
[Music]
so you've got 18 miles left to go so
we're not quite halfway yeah and three
quite good we've got about 24 knots
roughly which is one of the strongest we
have a bit of both sails up so yeah
we're pretty pretty please
you've got roots to in the main and
we've read the gym as well because we
are getting gusts much higher but yeah
it's been quite well these these day is
quite graphic execute but it's okay
Chelsea's handling it so good
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
vanilla here now we've got four miles
there we've got about 26 knots of wind
now so we think there's been an
acceleration zone around the island but
it's looking good secedes day is still
pretty bad folks but a good sound but
averaging about five to six knots which
we're quite happy with
let's good
we're just coming out of the wind design
so in a minute we're going to take the
brief at the jib just maintain that for
a bit just to make sure that no wind is
funneling on the other side of the
island or the little island just off of
port Santos and once we're sure that out
will shake the creeps out of the main
they just died
we'll take the reach out of the main and
say all the rest of the way
so we're nearly home for tea santa is
taking just under six hours
our friends Anna and Simon are here
already and yes we get it
