Dave's driving this my mate Dave I'm the
reluctant cautious slightly anxious
passenger we've got a big job today
we're looking forward to it not quite
the weather for it actually because it's
so good I but we're avender a drink
earlier in the week and Dave said to me
he said I'm not sure about store chips
tell them what you were telling what you
were thinking so we both got storm chips
they're not easy to put up I've got a
wraparound one you've got a hang time
but it hangs over your did you know if
you're out and you pick up to sort of
force five or six and you start reefing
and by the time you realize look we're
gonna need a storm jib
you've got me out on deck in a four six
maybe a four seven trying to get this
lemon thing
I'm not sure that's something you'd want
to do if you had full awareness of a
storm approaching through accurate
weather forecasting then you could
account for it but when forecast up
generally accurate so I could see how
many occasions you'd be on the front of
a of the boat trying it put up this
unmanageable thing sorting your sheets
out trying your sheets oh I'm getting
here just drop sorted out just wonder
whether it's practical so we and also we
rarely use them so we forget how they
work so we're gonna remind ourselves
today I think mine's quite easy really
we'll see I think mine was designed
properly carefully thought through and
well executed and it's quite easy to put
up from memory we did use it once Jim we
deliberately and rather foolishly you
might say went out in there
a gale that was gusting to force 10 him
just outside of Portsmouth Harbor and we
did it to tried the storm Jim and
actually on the Benneteau it
it worked remarkably well and it
surprised us both so that's what we're
up to today and easily we got a stormy
weather for we've got strongly weather
yeah what do these boats know that we
don't so here we are really want to go
down them whoops
drop off all the areas cushions back by
the way and
him but I want to show you how clean
he's got his ropes after being shaved
and named for the dirtiest ropes in the
marina I'll show you later
he spilled so many coffees cups of
coffees plus the coffee's ground grits
all in my bills over the years so much
of it so I bought these coffee bags
I like to vachs
fisherman's rest it's not a place you
got a video to Lymington best pub in
Limington apparently best reviews on
TripAdvisor it's called the fisherman's
rest are from our walk money told you
the compliments wouldn't last long
compliments would not last long and
they've gone already is a clue
beer tap that's okay so there's attack
it's probably been six or seven years
since we use this storm give it's a
wraparound sail so it folds around the
force day or the rolled Genoa the carry
bag clips onto the safety lines and you
hoist the sail out of the bag attach the
halyard to the head of the sail I use a
safety tether as a tax drop it's a
little too long so I'll probably get
something shorter made up you then
secure the sheets we just used one for
today I'd normally tie a bowline rather
than use a shackle
we missed it but this shackle and I
should have been connected so Dave
lowers the sail to reconnect
and then up she goes again
as we knew she sets well but I don't
think you'd relish doing this in a gale
up on the bow
we made a checklist and an order of
events so that we would spend as little
time at the vow as possible dropping the
sale was straightforward day me to the
forward cabin without too much trouble
so our plan today is to visit the
fisherman's arrest in Limington it's a
pub that's just a mile or so after a
turn well catch this strong westerly
tide in the morning
we're rubbish at this video stuff we
bought a lovely new microphone with a
sort of hairy wind must thingy but we
forgot to switch them icons and you've
got this overdub you need to be aware of
the shallow waters to the north of the
entrance of Lymington there's a
permanent reminder for those that like
cutting corners be aware of the two
Lymington to Yarmouth ferries they cross
regularly and they meet in the middle
there are a few problems with this entry
other than being aware that they
channeled shallows quite quickly if you
tend to stray outside there are a couple
of Linton's it posts to help you around
the bend
we'd normally like to stop at the 10 key
but due to time constraints and the
location of the pub we've dropped in at
the first of the two marinas Limington
Yacht Haven you can tail them on channel
80
the fisherman's rest pub used to be
called grotton's cottage and it was
granted a liquor license in 1870 he was
another of Livington as many smugglers
halls one of the best rated pubs in the
area very friendly and very attentive
staff a big choice of fish along with
meat and veggie options we both opted
for the fish pie which didn't disappoint
you
you
so I'm absolutely stuffed realist
no reality that was the only light bike
for me each sake alright we had a plate
of halloumi chances of fish stick
halloumi cheese and we had this big fish
pie that big so and we just left the pub
on I'm absolutely stuffed and the first
thing is you're walking along wouldn't
it be nice so maybe we should do this
one day he's on the way home yeah as in
in a few minutes time we have champagne
on board yep with a cream cheese yeah we
could have we could water thus comes up
in your pathetic little oven nicely in
my Cool Runnings oven clotted cream
strawberry jam and we do it when the
time was just mulleted me against a
slowing us down for a nice sedate
longest journey back here would be ideal
yeah and then you wouldn't need any
dinner you're always worried about
cooking dinner yes cumberly
I suppose maybe I just thought we were
it more macho than that cream tea and
German scones a little bit bubbly on
board on our way home we would just
stuffed ourselves seems a bit odd
anyway perfectly durably yeah great
really good fish pie nice halloumi a big
fish choice if we'd gone there for
dinner you know some wonderful fish on
their specials board certainly were to
visit for dinner as well as lunch do you
um do you want to tell everybody about
the shocking disaster that of the
morning I did absolutely the loss the
big loss Oh seriously look my helping
with he stormed him he's got no idea no
pre-planning utter chaos anxiety reigns
and in the process of you're exactly
right you were nervous about taking the
thing I'm left with my best Hank he went
overboard how he lost all of his silk
handkerchiefs those honestly not a spare
on board anyway you can't have cream tea
and scones and jam on board without oh
this is so not David Attenborough I mean
hanky that Yuri washed that he's saving
the planet this stuff
I was lucky first of all you even had
kitchen roll on the boat honestly sorry
I brought it up
you might remember that Dave son Joel
died about 14 months ago and Dave's
written a book it's called all about
heaven
I think it's on its third reprint coming
a second so they've sold out the center
it's from like wildfire ready but we'll
send a link we'll put a link to it's a
good read all about heaven and what
happens when somebody dies so yeah and
also we're doing an evening about my
wife Jill and I an evening event called
all about heaven it will be part
conversational around the journey Jill
myself and the family went through and
also some of the content of the book and
it's the amazing snow cat the serum Hill
Center in serum Hill March the 5th at
7:30 you don't need tickets there's no
cost to attend we are expecting a pretty
packed auditorium so for parking sake
best to get there around 7:30 or a bit
earlier and we'll start at 7:45 so
you'll see a link on the leash or lazy
Jack's page to the details of that
evening an event and also a short video
that we did just explaining the content
of the book so you could check out if
it's something you'd like to come and be
part of
we'll put some links below one more
topic of discussion
our wives are Fairweather sailors yeah
and we keep saying we'll bring our wives
there we'll do this with that and of
course we might get one or two short
trips a year because of the weather and
the UK's not brilliant so how can you
get over that in this country I'm sure
we're not the only ones what can be
dangerous place your other high and more
give us your ideas folks what you think
has helped you or if you've got a little
idea what we've tended to do generalize
use Cool Runnings a little bit like a
summer cottage when it's not really nice
out on the sea will swing on the mooring
and we're in a lovely setting and then
we can take the tender back and forth
but she quite likes it if it's calm and
then choosing slack water is a good way
of dealing with that go over to Ireland
hard but war she loves Newtown Creek or
gist Arbor so those three places do feel
safe secure and very very happy plus we
fitted new lights Emily have you told
him about our new life yeah well I ever
seen something like search like that
more water yeah they are they snot
Poznan no but you just you got three
three touch four different lumen levels
yeah with my money he bought me the
first one and it was so bad I had to
take it out it was so bright I was
getting retina damaged so we've had to
replace that with slightly lower lower
Lubin versions so these are four hundred
lumens on max and that's about right
anyway decent light rosette yeah other
half on board yeah will form I didn't
like what you chose cuz it was too
bright right there so gave them my gray
when did the problems that Dave had is
that when he first took Jill out when he
goes
first boat years and years ago he went
out in a force seven or something and he
broached wildly and put the mast
virtually in the water yes for geo was
absolutely desperate distraught so she's
not enjoying it quite so much since then
Rachel hasn't been through such a nice
very excuse me
Rachel experienced worse and I'd like I
think ahead no no I I you had to lock
her up in the cabin in a bag with a
vomit ball for five hours the poor girl
where was it from there somewhere in in
the West Country
but don't you give up my problems you
tell them the truth
Rachel he's never come back for an
overnight she maybe she was a sick she
was why was she we didn't run the mast
in the water you didn't need to you were
rolling like a pig in mud weren't you
non-stop that's no good giggling and
pretending you're guilty it was serious
lesson judgments family or for you to
Helena
that's all it was a short of a shocking
swirl it was bad I agree and she should
have taken around in it but John thank
you I lost my phone on the same day
overboard I snuff fourth phone up lost
over those say I've never lost one and I
Buster my pad yeah I remember see I
found my eyes and Catherine stock in
London yeah he just leaves them I mean
oh boy we treat our phone with a bit of
dignity and respect then we will make
sure it's locked away he just puts it up
on the deck just leaves it there no
velcro nothing just leaves it lurking
and could see inevitable happens your
your son not trying to mine in last year
just it was Josh's fault not mine no it
was where you put in some ridiculous
bracket you bought at the Boat Show on
your binnacle compasses you know and
rarely smacked it and off it went again
another yeah another owner lost
than any way you have a cup of tea and
then head back
you
