Me and Wendy have been sailing together, but she gets seasick. So I do all of the sailing solo and she stays down below deck. We head up north the coast of Santiago to Tarrafal. The wind is in my face so I zigzag close to short to stay away from swell and waves. In Tarrafal we hang out with local surfers. And the next day we go all the way back to Praia by taxi to fetch our boat documents from the Maritime Police. That night we set sail for Mindelo. The passage is hard on all of us. Upwind against waves and current. It gets strongest as the day progresses. I push with the engine, and then it cuts out. I'm screwed.

[Music]
our next destination was up this coast
about seven nautical miles sounds easy
with an exception
[Music]
my strategy was to follow the coast
closely to stay away from the waves and
swell
peter took the sailing further out to
sea his boat goes upwind better
[Music]
i tacked back and forth zigzagging close
to shore
that way in case of engine failure i can
steer clear danger under sail power
there was no shortage of wind here gusts
were hitting 30 knots
but this strategy was working for me and
it's something i learned from locals
mainly my friend paige
[Music]
foreign
[Music]
it was a slow process as galapan was
only averaging four to five knots but if
i had gone further out
i would be bashing against two to three
meter waves and not making much headway
and i would have a tough time keeping a
bearing north and a good angle to the
wind
that was working for peter but i don't
think it would work for me
[Music]
the pirate family had told me they had
tried to sail upwind to tarafal
but in the end had to turn back as they
could not sail up against the wind
and reach their destination up the coast
[Music]
after about two hours i got closer to
terror foul here
there are still some wind gusts but not
much swell
peter's up ahead of course but i'm not
far behind
[Music]
well look who's here it's peter's son
alec and his girlfriend jennifer
they came down by ferry a 20-hour
journey
they'll stay at the boat with peter a
couple of days then spend a week in an
[Music]
airbnb
we decided to hang out at this beach
here in tarafal
the girls lily and wendy decided to stay
at the boat
[Music]
there is a really cool vibe in this town
thanks to its beach and
several sweet surfer spots and as well
beach bars
this one made awesome mojitos it was a
sunday afternoon so the beach is busy
many locals drive the two-hour journey
from the city to hang out here
normally there would be quite a few
foreign tourists here but because of
covid
it's mostly homegrown tourism
[Music]
we met a crew of local surfers i knew
these two from before
peter left to be with lily while me and
the guy switched to grog
i gave a few bucks to one of them who
happily fetched the liquor
we slowly got drunk on sunshine and grog
until sunset
then peter came to get us tomorrow will
be a busy day
we are planning to sail out today but
before we do that we have to get our
boat papers and exit form
from the maritime police and that is all
the way back to the city
[Music]
prior
[Music]
we pitched in for a taxi and annie here
would spend a day with us
it is an inconvenience to go all the way
back to the city to do this
it's about two hours to go and two more
to come back
[Music]
we decided to make the most of it
beginning with a stop here for our
specialty
lingisa sausage it was near lunchtime
and they offered barbecued pork
absolutely delicious and tender
we bought some sausage to bring back and
continued on
we would take advantage and grab a late
lunch as well as some cheddar cheese for
peter which he found at a local
supermarket
a rare commodity here on the islands
the authorities went through the
formalities of issuing us an exit paper
as well as our boat documents it took
about a half hour or a little more
we are back in terra file end of day and
decided to make our way north to mindelo
at sunset
we should arrive end the day tomorrow
the wind usually drops at night so it's
a good time to get started and it's just
beautiful
[Music]
i set my course north and sailed as
close up when as gallup i could
peter already had a better angle but we
plan to meet in the morning close to the
next island
sonny kalau
[Music]
in the morning i could see we were not
on a good course we were drifting south
and not going very fast
[Music]
i had taken three reefs to be safe but
that was not working so well
we could not generate enough speed and
inertia against the waves
and then the wind picked up 25 to 30
knots sustained
and waves short broken and bigger
[Music]
the window is coming more from the north
than usual i had a tough time keeping a
good bearing
i tacked correct but galloping was
struggling only doing three to four
[Music]
knots
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
so
i decided to push with the motor i could
get a better angle and push the four or
five knots speed
it was working i checked on wendy who
just slept and puked
the poor thing i'll soon get you to land
my dear
and then my engine just stopped
i'm really bummed on my way back from
santiago to uh mindelo and
my engine just stopped running man i was
pushing up
to get a better angle on the on the wind
and it was kind of low
and the engine just stopped
god damn it i don't know why now i'm
gonna think this through
[Music]
sucks what can it be what can it be what
could it be what could it be
you can't reach peter he's too far out
of range
[Music]
okay stay positive alex stay positive
you'll figure it out
[Music]
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
so
[Music]
