In this episode of Sailing A B Sea we discover the ups and downs of how to find Internet overseas. The Mediterranean is a popular place but with each country...

It's been a fairly sleepless night. At
one point the wind completely changed
direction and the anchor pulled out and
had to reset itself, that was quite scary.
So I've got to go into town to pick up a
data sim and then once that's done we'll
be upping anchor and heading to the
southern part of the island.
Where are you going aqua woman?
I'm going to dive the anchor and check it's in.
Good girl!
Well that was good, it's dug in like a tick!
Dug in like a tick? It's not going anywhere
Good stuff. Yeah.
We just want to say we
really appreciate our patrons because
you really keep us floating and making videos.
Yeah making our journey
sustainable and a big thanks to longtime
patron Trevor Bench who's just moved up
a tier and he's now enjoying "Onboard
Activities"
Thanks very much Trevor.
Yeah thanks Trevor and also welcome to Michael Mayo
Yep, thanks to both of you and of course
all of our other patrons for making this journey possible.
We bought a four fish from a fisherman
that came by this morning and it was my
job to descale and gut them. So here's
the fish that we've cooked, well I've
cooked, with some salad and we did get
four this morning
and while I was descaling and gutting
them over the... at the back of the boat
because it was so slippy, I
lost one, it just shot overboard
and by the time I'd taken my glasses off and
dived in it had just disappeared! It had
swam away, swum away... so we've got three but we
actually only wanted three to start with
didn't we? I think it's enough. Yeah. Yeah
The next thing on the agenda to buy is also
a nonstick pan and a fish descaler
Yes that would be really helpful because it
took a long time and I probably bruised
the fish while I was doing it with a
knife but you know it's all a learning
curve and I'm sure it's gonna taste
great. I'm sure it will.
I think it's gonna be very bony, I can see lots of little bones. Mmm well I brought this up for bones
Ah fabulous
Mmm it's very good.
We're in a much more
sheltered anchorage here than we were
when we woke up this morning, aren't we Baz?
Yes the other place was really
untenable for another night, there
certainly wouldn't be any sleep
literally we came one and a half
nautical miles around the corner so we
didn't even bother putting the sails out
we just motored around. There was 30
knots of wind out there at one point
when we come through and in here
although we're still getting gusts
there's no random direction of the gusts, they're
are all coming from from one general
location yeah and they're not
they're not as strong either no it's
much much more pleasant.
And it's a pretty little bay too actually
Well we're actually trying to get
internet connection at the moment which
is obviously a big thing for us
particularly Saturday and Sunday after
our video goes out on YouTube because we
like to talk to people and reply to your
comments. Yep indeed so leave comments
on the videos we always get back to you.
Yeah, so that's the next challenge trying
to get connected to some sort of
internet so that we can do some work but
by the time you see this we will have
solved that problem so that's pretty
cool hey? All right okay well I'm gonna
troubleshoot internet and stuff like that
We are in Delaila's bar on the
beach where we are anchored in front of
and the mission today is to find a phone
signal so that we can actually activate
the 30 euros of credit that we've got.
The SIM card is activated but there's no
phone signal here so we can't install
the credit that we've bought onto it.
Plus the fact although we have looked ahead for
the weather by about five days and it
seems to be pretty much like this it
does feel weird being totally blind to
any weather that may or may not be happening
especially if we want to in a day or two
move to the next island, we don't really
want to do it without knowing you know
what to expect
yeah so that's why this mission is
vitally important today so we stopped
the Delaila's to fortify ourselves with
a beer because we've got to climb up a
hill and see if we can get any signal at
the top of the hill and if we can't get
a signal atop the hill we're gonna have
to walk into town which is a 40 minute
walk. Yeah. And it's quite warm. It is warm. Yeah.
We did also, we did actually also bring water - a whole litre and a half
So this is the view that we've got at the moment
Listen to those chimes
I reckon nothing says summertime like
wind chimes and cicadas on a warm day
Well that wasn't quite as successful as
we hoped - we didn't have to walk to town
because the guy in the bar was really
helpful wasn't he? Very helpful, he used to
work for a telecom company and what he's
figured out is that the lady in the shop
has sold me a telephone sim and sold
me credit for a data sim so ne'er the
twain shall meet.
So we're gonna have to go back to the
boat and come up with a plan C because
it'd be too late to walk into town now
because the shops are closed till 5:00 yeah.
So back to the boat, see what we can come up with
Well I'm thinking lunch, snorkelling. Okay
There's A B Sea over there, she's a fringe dweller
Ooh, look what I've found!
Hello
That was quite sedate for them wasn't it?
They kind of slowed down
Our mission
today has taken us from that bay down
there where A B Ses is anchored all the way
up this very steep hill and we've got to
cross over the top of the highest point
here and then take a left down into the
town over there. It's about a 30 minute walk
We are going back into town for a
second time to try and get a data only
sim and then we can apply our thirty
euros worth of credit to it and see how
many gigabytes that gives us, so we're
going in reasonably early. Yep. It's about
nine o'clock I think - that's where we're
going. The place we're first gonna try is
the post office in the old part of town
at the Town Square
It's a fiesta day today so everywhere is
closed. Yeah even though it's Monday the
shops are shut, and in particular the post
office
And we were planning on leaving here tomorrow
to head south? Yep.
But it looks like we've got another hour's walk
tomorrow morning to come
and get the card and the quest continues!
See if we had internet we could have googled and found out there was a fiesta - and found out there was a fiesta
but we haven't so
we couldn't so we didn't. No. Coz that 9
gigabytes turned out to be nine hundred
megabytes. Yeah. And we've got how many? 538 left. There you go! Yes.
Okay back to the boat Batman
Well that anchorage on the southern side of
Lipsi got very busy overnight and this
morning everybody has upped anchor and left, us included.
We are heading to Liros
we've got three plans here for anchoring
the first one hopefully will give us
access to town where we can probably buy a data sim
Fingers crossed. Yep
There's really not enough wind for
sailing but we have got the head sail
out acting more like a kite than a wing
in the hopes that it might give us an
extra half knot and if the wind does pick up then
we're already prepared and then we can
switch the engine off. It's not too far
together I think it's about nine miles that we've gotta go anyway. Oh that's not far at all
not alot.
Oh it doesn't like that at all
We might bring it in!
Now here's a question for all you sailor
guys and girls, our anchor chain is
slightly twisted and it sometimes likes
to jump off the gypsy when we're
bringing it back up, now this could cause
problems as you all know, my question
here is if we've got a dead calm flat
day and we're out in let's say 80
hundred metres of water, would it be
possible for us to just stand still in
the water, drop the chain over the side
with the anchor of course and let it
come back up and untwist itself as it
comes back up from that depth? Let us
know in the comments down below your
help would be appreciated thank you.
