So we actually sat down today, yeah and
talked about it, yeah. Like you were saying we
have a hire car for a week and it's
a beautiful day to go out exploring and
filming and everything else but I was
just brought to a screeching halt and I
thought I just don't want to do that today.
This is just just blows your mind basically.
Day 2 of car rental and we are heading south
to Chalkida and we are going to meet up
with a couple of Aussie sailors who have
their boats down in the marina there for
the winter, hopefully gonna have a go for
a beer with them. We're also hopefully
going to be ticking a few more things
off our hardware shopping list and if we
get time do a little bit of sightseeing
Yes! Now you had a look at some places
to go yesterday didn't you? Yeah I did - the closest place in Chalkis is the castle, the fort
that was over the boat actually. Yeah we were
anchored underneath the fort area
Yeah so that would probably be our first
choice to go to. Yeah, we like old stuff
We do! We're also expecting some snow
remnants on the pass, the high pass
and if there is we'll film it for you!
There's snow on the road look
Well we've just driven up to the parking
at the castle here and Chalkida. We've left
it a little bit late, it's it's nearly
four o'clock now. Well we didn't get here
till 12:30 because of stuff we were
doing this morning and then we've
literally spent the whole of the time
sitting on our new friend's boat - chatting - talking about
boat stuff and places we've been. Yeah good time.
So we just found out that
this place closes at 3:30, it's now close
to four o'clock. In the winter it's only
open Tuesdays Thursdays and Sundays so
Thursday the car's got to go back,
Sunday is no good coming here because
we want the shops to be open, so
Tuesday is the day that we will be back in Chalkida
Now it's time to drive back over the pass back
to Limni and do what we've got to do.
This morning I woke up feeling - despair I
think is the word. The biggest problem
we've got at the moment is unknowns and
specifically unknowns about the keel and
the condition it's in. And when I have
unknowns I can't make a decision and
that basically brings me to a screeching
halt. If I have facts and figures in
front of me I can make an instant
decision and things work out pretty good
The keel on the other hand is so unknown.
And I've been feeling ... because we haven't
really talked about it together have we?
No. I think we've both been sort
of you know not wanting to worry the
other person so I've been lying awake at
night thinking of all the worst-case
scenarios that could possibly happen you
know supposing supposing the hull is
compromised you know with salt water
ingress, supposing the bolts are
really badly corroded, you know lots of
things. So we actually sat down today - today yeah -
and talked about it - yeah like you were
saying we have a hire car for a week
and it's a beautiful day to go out
exploring and filming and everything
else but I was just brought to a
screeching halt and I thought I just
don't want to do that today, this is
it just it just blows your mind basically.
So we've sat down now and over
a couple of beers begun to make a
flowchart if you like of jobs that
need to be done and a separate sort of
flow chart for the keel situation and it
feels good just to be doing that
actually doesn't it coz yeah you know like
it gets it out of your head - Yes yeah it does
and it we know that once we start work
cuz we can't do until we get the tools from ...
the, oh Nikos has
got an oscillating cutter which we're
going to use to unglass the keel bolts
What we're going to do is with the keel
bolts it's probably going to be four in
the middle and then two at the front and
back. We're going to take diagonally
opposed ones from the middle and then
cut the glass away from them
pull those bolts. Now when we pull the
bolts two things are going to happen or
one of two things are going to happen: We're
gonna pull them and they're going to be
schmick which is the best case scenario,
we're going to pull them and they're
going to be bollixed - that's a technical term by the way (and worst case scenario) and then we'll unglass
the other six bolts and inspect those as
well. And take it from there really
you know. The worst case scenario is the
bolts are all bollixed and I don't think
they really are because the water that was
coming out from the hull and keel
joint was just clear water no rust, not rusty
yeah. So yeah. So the flow chart kind
of finishes there until we can actually
see it, so we've been working on other the
other maintenance side of things, you
know, the engine maintenance, fuel
maintenance and now we're looking at
instrument - wiring for the instruments. The wiring yeah
so we're sort of moving forward at least
in the planning stages I think. I think
we've been, well weather's stopped us for
a while didn't it because it was very
wet and very cold - cold - and just it
wouldn't have ... we couldn't have worked in
those conditions really and the other
thing has been I think we've both
been dragging our feet a bit you know cuz it's scary!
It's like opening Pandora's box. You want to see
what's in the box but you don't want to see
what's in the box! You've gotta be brave!
And I keep going back to, you know when we first bought the boat or even before that Baz said, you know
let's have an adventure. And I keep
going ... so when we see, when we sort of
come up against things that are scary I go back to
adventure movies in my head and I go well no
adventure movie is smooth, is it? No. It...
there's always a bad guy, there's always a
really at least one difficult situation
that the hero or heroine has to overcome
and that's what makes the movie good
that's what makes it an
adventure because you don't know what
the outcome's going to be well
unless it's a Holly movie then you
always do! So we're in a part of the
adventure of our life that is - we're just
about to possibly look at how bad the
bad guy is. Yeah. Yeah.
So anyway so that's
where we're at. Yeah. But it does feel good to
be actually at this stage now. Yeah. Cool
We're a team.
Team A B Sea continues!
A couple of days later
Juliano the boatyard guy came and sanded
the hull, the keel, the prop and the rudder
A warmest welcome to our newest patron
Simon Wallis, thanks Simon. We hope that
you and everyone can join us next week
as we take the hire car and discover
more of Evia island in Greece. We visit the
impressive natural hot springs at Edipsus
and we also notice the extent of
road damage that occurred during the
recent storms. If you enjoyed this video
give us a thumbs up and subscribe if you
haven't already and ding the bell so
that you're notified of future video
updates. Thanks for watching Sailing A B Sea
and see you next time
