In this episode of Sailing A B Sea our cutlass bearing is finally delivered, we get to the stage of putting our first coat of antifoul paint on the keel and rudder plus we tick off several cosmetic cleaning jobs. But having our cutlass bearing finally delivered is definitely the big moment for Baz.

I was coming back from my loo break this
morning and Evgenia the lady
who runs the boatyard: "Barry come here"
presented me with this which is of
course our bearing
I just hope it's the right size
Moving down to ground level and
thankfully in the shade of A B Sea
now that the sun is higher in the sky
we're going to put the Sikaflex along
the hull and keel joint and we did speak
with a guy from Sikaflex and told him
what we were gonna do and what we had
we sent him some photos and he
recommended the particular Sikaflex
that we're gonna use I think it's 295 UV
though why we've got UV under the waterline I'm
not sure but that's what he told us to use
I think wearing gloves might have been a
good idea but it is what it is, I'm
going to go and clean up and then I'll
show you exactly what the finished bit
looks like
Well the masking tape has now
been removed and what we're left with is
a black Sikaflex line all around the
hull and keel joint and where there were
gaps I made sure that I pumped an
excessive amount of the Sikaflex into
the gap so much that it did actually
went into the gap and then started
oozing out when the gap is full so we'll
leave that to dry for 24 hours and then
we will do some more
primer coats on the keel
So that little lot of primer actually
covered the whole of the keel so we're
very pleased about that
Is this some kind of musical instrument Baz?
Yeah this is
my Zen wind chimes to take the stress
away. No these are actually the guards
for our bow thruster, there are six of
them, one of them is off on a mission to
get new screws at the moment, so
I'm just putting antifoul on them
and I'm using the same antifoul that I'm
using on the prop and prop shaft
and this is the spray can stuff so just about
to give them another coat
and give this another coat
and then we've
just gonna wait for everything to dry
and come back and do the same tomorrow
so it's a bit of rinse and repeat
at the moment
We're up relatively early this
morning we're going to get another coat
of epoxy primer onto the keel while it's
still relatively cool and a longtime
subscriber of ours asked us a question
which made us think and he said when you
are mixing the two-part epoxy is it
mixed by weight or by volume? Now we've
originally been doing it by weight and
we've just done a little bit of a 'speriment' and found out that you are
absolutely correct in your thinking so
thank you very much for taking us down
that path, your name is on the screen
right now as a thank you and we've just
found out that it is actually by volume
and not by weight, so we've got a couple
of little cups here that we've marked
off now and we'll get the mix right and
maybe it won't go off so bad and maybe
it'll be easier to put onto the keel.

when we put out a brand-new episode of
Sailing A B Sea.
Let's crack on with this keel, hey?
That's another step forward a
complete coat of epoxy primer on the
whole of the keel including the
underside and we had a little bit left
over from the can
so we've slapped that onto the rudder
and as we go through the cans whatever's
left over we'll just continue to cut the
rudder until it looks pretty good and
ready for antifouling. Just another day
at the office really.
That's the final coat of
epoxy primer and the next stage
is the first coat of anti foul, but first ...
I'm gonna have to do something with my
barnet, it's getting a bit out of
control and today is the day for it I reckon
We think it might rain so we're like
that whether we should start antifouling
or not.
Sunday morning and I've just been
through the latest comments on the video
that we released yesterday and I'd like
to say a big thank you to Dennis Cook
who pointed out that petroleum jelly
otherwise known as Vaseline is not the
right product to put onto rubber because
the petroleum will eventually eat into
the rubber.
So first job on the list this morning is
to take the connection off the back of
the aft head and clean off the Vaseline
and put the correct product on which is
a silicon-based product so we'll do that first
Then we're going to go down the
ladder and we're going to put the first
coat of anti foul paint onto the rudder
and the keel
and also for Murray Westenskow
I've got my big pliers out and
when I've got this finger tight I'll
give it one little twist with these bad
boys
Job done, thanks for the tips guys
We're using high-tech tools
for this next job as you
can see. The finished surface of the
epoxy primer is kind of smooth and kind
of rough so we're just going to give the epoxy
primer just a little bit of a sand to
give it a little bit of roughness
because better be safe than sorry eh?
Oh did you notice the barnet?
It looks fabulous doesn't it?
Lovely color
It's quite busy in the yard at the moment,
we've got quite a lot of boats getting work
done and our friends Renate and Wolfgang
on Meerkat they're on the sled now so they're
probably going to be finishing off the
bits of their antifoul that they
couldn't reach while they were on the
hard stands so that means they're pretty
close to splash
Whilst we have the prop out of the
bow thruster tunnel we're going to
paint the inside of the tunnel as well
because it's just easier with the prop removed
While we've been putting the first coat
of the anti foul paint on the wind has
picked up considerably so I'm going to have to
use the Canon camera and it's got no
image stabilization so I am
walking very slowly.
[sound of crash]
The stepladders just blew over, we'll
leave them down there they can't go any
further down than that!
So first coat on the rudder, first coat
on the keel, six hours from now we'll
come out and do it all again and slowly
but surely moving forward
All right it's time for beer
Oh yeah!
Can you show me your babies?
Hello mummy. Mummy just wants cuddles
Here in the boatyard as we've watched
winter turn to spring and now turn to
summer we've watched a few of the
various bits of wildlife come to life
and one of the things we have noticed is
a lot of the mud wasps are trying to
come in through your open ports on your
boat and find little places inside your
boat to make mud nests for their little
babies, so we found a way of stopping
that by putting flyscreen netting up
Also in the through hulls, the outside of
the through hulls, wasps like to make
little nests in there
so we've blocked those up as well
but this one is the classic one...
This a catamaran and if we go underneath the
hull and have a look up here we can see
that a swallow has built a nest
underneath this catamaran and we can
tell it's a swallow because it's got a
big opening for a bird to get through so
just be careful and check your boat out
when you do get back to it for any
hitchhikers that may have attached
themselves to the inside, the outside or
even the underneath
This guy's actually
been very sensible as he's prepared his
boat for leaving it for the winter and
into the spring. He's just rolled up a rag and
tucked it inside the through hull, there's
also one here and another one here
forward but this one must have fallen
out and you can see that the through
hull looks as though it's blocked up.
Some little creature has obviously laid
its little eggs or larvae in here and
then blocked up the entrance with mud
and I can actually break that, so
somewhere deep inside there there is a
nest mm-hmm
We have spent the last two
days doing various little bits of jobs
on A B Sea and we didn't film them at the time
because they're well they're relatively
boring jobs so I think it's probably
more interesting if I just show you the
end results. One of the first jobs we've
done is to put the first coat of
antifouling around all of the through
hulls so when we get to put the
antifouling on all we've got do is
just roller roller roller and not worry
too much about the through hulls. We've
also put the bow thruster propeller
back in and that's had
its first coat of antifoul on and
that will get a second coat tomorrow but
this side, the anode is reattached and we've
put the protection bars across the bow
thruster tunnel. So the other side will
look exactly the same when it's all
finished. One of the big jobs that I've
been doing involved moving this sturdy
scaffolding around the hull because I
was cleaning the white part of the hull
It did have quite a few marks from
fenders that eventually sort of like turn
into a sticky surface and as they rub
against the hull they just leave this
sticky residue behind
so I've cleaned all that and we didn't
want to put dirty fenders back on the
hull and just get it dirty again so
we've got Aannsha on the job over here.
I'm just looking at these blue boot
stripes I think once we got the anti
foul on here and it all looks nice to the
waterline those dirty boot stripes are
gonna look at horrendous. I cleaned them as
best I can that's as best we can do but
anyway let's take a look what Aannsha's
doing with these fenders
Eh, sitting down on the job again hey?
So how's it going?
Alright. I've got two of the really
really mucky ones clean. They were
covered in - and this one - covered
in a kind of sticky substance that
nothing got off. The only thing that I've
found works on it is acetone, so I've
decanted it into here because it was
just evaporating out of the tin and at
least this way I'm not breathing in too
many fumes either. So I've just found that
you know, a clean-ish cloth and
a fairly hard rub and it gets it off.
So the new ones
that we've got, I think just a regular
clean of them will be fine
This one is another one of the really
old ones that Jens donated to us and I
think that's the best that I can do I'll
give it another go but it's not
actually dirty, it's just discoloured
Yeah, yeah, okay. Carry on Admiral.
Thank you Captain.
Now we've got two coats of anti foul on the hull
I've put the anode back on and made sure
that the hole that goes through the hull
is bare metal so that this bolt that goes
through the anode actually touches the
bare iron of the keel.
Here at the prop I've put on
some marine grease on the
gears. It sounds a bit squeaky
But this stuff
apparently it's the bee's knees
it stays on and is quite resistant to
being worn away by salt water
That's why bees are dying out Baz
coz you're using bees' knees in props! Right!
Well they've got so many legs haven't they? So
They just take an alternate leg and it should be alright
I've heard they grow back
Oh, okay. Yep
So as you can see we have been
making step by step, bit
by bit progress forward into
getting A B Sea ready
to be splashed
Oh and I've just had word from DHL that
the cutlass bearing has arrived in
Athens. It only took one day to get from
the UK to Athens. Now let's see how long
it takes to get from Athens to Chalkida
and then to Limni
Don't hold your breath!
Yeah.
It's an exciting day at A B Sea. Can you
guess what's in the parcel?
I can. I can too!
It is of course
our bearing.
I just hope it's the right size
Before I open this I'd just like to say a
very big thank you to Tom from Exalto
Bearings UK, he has been exceptionally
helpful in dealing with this matter with
us so thank you very much Tom
All right let's open this
little baby. Okay!
Oh it's got popcorn in it. Okay, err...
I'll put this in here
Coz if this bearing is okay
then were gonna reuse its packaging to
send the previous bearing that was a
little bit too big back to the UK
Ta-daa! Yaaay!
Such a little thing and it's caused
such a lot of bother hasn't it!
Before we finish this video and with the
unmistakable sound of summer surrounding
me I'd just like to say thank you very
much to all of you, subscribers and
non-subscribers, all of you who have
stayed watching A B Sea all throughout this
8 months of being on the hard and also
thank you so much for all the tips and
helpful advice on getting the jobs done
in the correct manner and the easiest
possible way, it really does help us out
so thank you very much for that once again
Now of course we are getting very
close to the finish line and as you'll
see in next week's video we take on
leaps and bounds and things although
they're hard and difficult to do we're
making huge progress forward so make
sure that you are subscribed and click
the bell icon so that you don't miss
next week's episode of Sailing A B Sea and
wherever you are in the world, stay safe
