In this episode of Sailing A B Sea we ask you what you think of our new sailing plan. Is it insanity or a cunning plan? The mission objective of Sailing A B Sea is to get back home to Australia and there are two ways to get there. The Atlantic and Pacific route or the Red Sea and Indian Ocean route. Viewers really don't like when YouTubers do this:
Hit that subscribe button because you're not going
to want to miss what we've got in store for you!
There is a kind of snack food that you can find
all across Turkey and it's called gözleme and
it's just as beautiful watching it being made
as it is eating it. You've seen and heard us make
reference to the markets that happen in Kaş every
Friday, well some of you said could you just take
us around the markets in a little bit more detail
and show us what goes on. Today being Friday that's
exactly what I'm gonna do. As we enter in through
to the lower part of the market the first stall
that we come across is this guy who's selling
an awful lot of knives, scythes all sorts of
cowbells and goat bells and sheep bells. Basically
a lot of the simple tools that a lot of the local
farmers would be using on a day-to-day weekly
basis. Lots of aromatic stuff here we've got
shower products and soap products and hair shampoo,
Big bits of soap here as well, large blocks of soap
and uh put basically if you want this cut to size
the soap goes in here and he chops off the size
of soap that you want. Of course you can't come to
a farmers market without fresh fruit and veggies
and this is the fresh fruit and veggie stall that
we always get our stuff from every Friday. The lady
here knows us from the last time we were here
merhaba, and uh she always gives us a good deal
Of course this is not the only fruit and veg stall
in the market, there are plenty more to choose from
and some of them if you have a look around have
things that others don't have. Strawberries are the
big thing right now, plenty of fresh strawberries
abound and they are really really juicy and tasty
This is an interesting thing as well, these seed
pods are actually dried and they're just eaten you
just sit there and chew on them and eat them. It's
an unusual taste, it's quite nice so if you see
these around buy one and chew down on them and see
what you think. Here's a good example of something
I was talking about before, this guy obviously
specializes in fresh mushrooms and these mushrooms
look absolutely fantastic and I should know
because they're one of my favorite things to eat!
So again shop around each store has something
unique to offer and this is probably where I'd
buy my fresh mushrooms from. This stall is always
busy. They have lots and lots of different cheeses
all fresh and of course lots and lots of marinated
olives and if you're not sure which olive you want
just ask to try one, they're quite happy to let you
try one. So if you're looking for some gift ideas
this stall here has some amazing wood carvings and
he's turned them into beautiful little set pieces
that you can have on your coffee table, these in
particular are great, they've got little built-in
candle holders so that would create a nice
ambiance at the night time. Great wall hangings too
clock, lots and lots of really really nicely , so check this stall out as
well if you're looking for some unique gift
ideas. Now this stall is one of my favourite
stalls in the market, this is the herbs and
spices and the smells coming from here are
absolutely amazing. There's so much to look at here
and so much to choose from it's it's hard to know
where to point the camera first. They even have
things like dried marigolds uh dried pomegranate
These are all sort of teas that you can brew up
for yourself as well. Lots of different types of
saffron as well, Turkish, Indian, Spanish and Persian
saffron. Just amazing and if you're feeling like a
little bit of a snack there's even Turkish delight
here. Orange, melon, rose pink, pomegranate, apple
So a great stall to come and indulge your senses
and if you get overwhelmed by the vast array of
stuff that's on offer then you can always go for
one of these great little gift packages which
has all sorts of different stuff in it
and a little grinder included as well
What a great idea to take back home for someone
who is into a bit of cooking and would like them
tastes of Turkey. Right next to the spices stall
is the dried fruit stall and if you've got a
sweet tooth like I have then you're going to love
this place. Pretty much every kind of fruit you
can imagine dried out to perfection and displayed
beautifully. Oh dried cranberries, that's that's one
of the things I find it difficult to get past.
Also if you like nuts as well, Turkey is uh is
a great place for all types of nuts, the Turks
absolutely adore them and we can see here a
great display of all sorts of different type of
nuts. Okay I'm actually going to get my gözleme
prepared and cooked now. I've ordered meat, onions
and mushrooms on it, so let's watch the process
For such a thin pancake the amount
of ingredients that went on there
are really quite generous so it's
going to have a lot of good flavours
And for that extra bit of flavour, lots of melted
butter. So a different kind of filling on this one
lots of cheese, lots of pepper and onions
and carrot and some herbs in there as well
She makes it look so easy
Okay well that's me loaded up with my
gözleme. Like I said I'm going to find
a nice shady spot to sit down and enjoy
this now possibly somewhere overlooking
the marina because it's good to look at and
that is Kaş market on a Friday in the winter
A super snack
very tasty and a good way to
finish off a trip to the market
Recent travel restrictions which have been
problematic for getting out of and into various
countries have led to a lot of downtime and
hear in the marina at Kaş in Turkey we've been
spending that downtime thinking
about our future travel plans
and basically we asked ourselves a question:
What is the ultimate objective of Sailing A B Sea?
Because it's not circumnavigation is it?
Well no it's not, because circumnavigation
for us would mean that we were back in Spain
when we finished the circumnavigation and
really that's not something we want to do.
I mean we truly love Spain but that's not
actually where we want to finish our journey is
it? No. So if circumnavigation is not the objective
what is the objective? Going to Australia.
That's right yeah that's what we want
to do we want to get from here back home. Yeah
and there's two different ways that we can go aren't there?
Yep, there's the Atlantic route which takes us
out to the west of the Mediterranean Sea, down
to the Canary Islands down to Cape Verde, across to
Brazil and up into the Caribbean then through the
Panama Canal, across the Pacific and to Australia.
Yeah that's a long journey isn't it? It is a long
journey and we'll get into the pros and cons of
why it's not such a better option for us than
the other option which is? Going south from here,
going through the Suez Canal, through the Red Sea
hanging left at the bottom, making our way to
India, down the Indian coast through Thailand
and eventually making our way to the East coast
of Australia. Yeah now pros and cons for each:
I think the Atlantic route is problematic because
first of all we've got to deal with 90 days in 180
days, the Schengen Zone dance. Now a lot of foreign flagged
vessels do that and do it quite well but to us
it's just like really we've only got 90 days to
get from Turkey and then leave the shores of the
Canary Islands. And you have to remember that the
Canary Islands are part of the Schengen Zone so
passage planning and provisioning in the Canary Islands,
we have to sort of take that into consideration so
yeah and your weather window. And the weather
window because we've got to get there
um so that we can leave in November because
that's the best time to actually make the crossing
um going west across the Atlantic. And also from
um a YouTube perspective, the islands when you
get to the Caribbean have been filmed and filmed
and filmed and you don't want to see any more pigs
swimming in the water. And red and white lighthouse!
But the thing is we want to bring you different
footage as well and that is something that
taking the alternative route can provide isn't it Baz?
Yeah also you've got to remember in the Caribbean
you've got a very short season, a six month season
before the hurricanes come and then you've got
to get out of dodge and find somewhere to spend
six months while the hurricanes rip through.
Then of course you've got to go through the Panama
Canal which is uh expensive to say the least
and then once you're through the Panama Canal
you're in the Pacific and the Pacific is a lot of
water with just a bunch of small island groups to
hop and skip from which basically means a lot of
long passages and long passages are not what we
like to do. We do like to go from place to place
and you know we've always said we're travellers
first, sailors second and I think if you've watched
enough of our channel you can see that. Yea. Yeah
so that's why we're kind of looking at going the
alternative... Well the other way is looking like the
the winner at the moment obviously we've got to go
through the Suez Canal which is uh going to cost
looking... we've only been researching this for
about a week so we're sharing this idea pretty
fresh with not a lot of fine tuned details. So
going through the Suez Canal is uh roughly around
about 300 US dollars uh once you've paid
for your agent and all that sort of stuff. And baksheesh
the baksheesh of course yeah um we'll tell you
all about that when we get around to that. Yeah. Um
then once you through the Panama Canal which
takes uh two days with an overnight stop um
we will be into the Red Sea, now. It's quite big isn't it?
It's hug. Looking at the size of it we reckon
it's going to take us at least two months
to get from north to south in the Red Sea
Because diving opportunities. There is scuba diving. The Red Sea
is world renowned for scuba diving opportunities
so we'll be stopping and doing a lot of that
hopefully. And also look Egypt. Yeah. I mean we can't
go past Egypt and not have a look at something
that is there. Yes definitely. You know even if
it's not the Pyramids maybe Luxor and Valley of
the Kings because that looks pretty awesome. Yeah
it does, so lots to see in that small section of
the world, then of course you're probably going
to say ah but have you considered pirate alley?
And we're not talking Jack Sparrow pirates these
are like real proper pirates with guns that want
to kill you. Of course once you get to the south
end of the Red Sea you come in close proximity
to the coast of Somalia and that's where most
of the pirates are hanging out these days because
that's the cool pirate spot. Yea. All jokes aside
you know we understand that and we will find out
how best to get around that corner and as far
away from Somalia as possible. Yeah I believe you
can get an escort can't you? There have been escorts in the
past from naval warships from various countries
so that that could still be an option. Yeah I mean
you know this this particular uh way
around is not without its um ... Challenges?
Yeah. Yeah? Yeah. But you know we're up for a
challenge. Yes. Um and then... Risks I was gonna say actually
Okay risks and challenges. And then once we're past
the pirates um we can head across the uh northern
end of the Indian Ocean and uh probably go to the
Maldives if the weather allows uh then on to India. India
Well I mean you know there's so much there
with their culture. Yeah. Er, not to mention
the different kinds of spicy foods that we
can taste along the way. We like spicy. Apparently the
curry, the sauces, get hotter the
further south you go. We're going south!
Then of course on to Thailand and then through
Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and then next thing
you know you're going to bump into Australia. So
that's the plan. Well let's hope we won't actually
bump into it but yeah. Yeah and... Yeah. We will
bring you more information as we find out more
information. But I tell you what if anybody that...
if you've been to any of those places or you've
sailed along any of that rout. Or if you live
there... And you'd like to catch up with us or show us
uh the part of the world that you're in we would
love to hear from you in terms of you know what to
expect, what we need to prepare for, when we can see
you. Yeah so leave a comment down below and um yeah
just let us know your thoughts about our thoughts.
Yeah and you know, whether you'd like to see that
as well. Yeah or do you want to see the pigs
swimming in the water off that Caribbean Island?
Again. Again. Oink, oink. Anyway we'll get more details to
you guys and girls as soon as we have them. Yep.
