In this episode of Sailing A B Sea we ask the question where do we hide from force 9 southern winds? Leaving the calm anchorage at Akcali our plan was to overnight anchor further north at Kucukbuk but when we realise how strong the southern winds are going to be we change our plan and head for Akbuk where we hide from the force 9 southern winds. hopefully the wind that they're
promising for tomorrow is is coming in
because right across the bay here in the
direction of bodrum
when we can see that we take a a left
and and head up
uh past gamoche look and around to the
other side of that bay to anchor
for tomorrow night protected again from
the
predicted wind

should be free
[Music]
thank you
[Music]
because the last thing we do when we are
anchoring
is we put it up to 3 000 revs in reverse
to make sure the anchor is well dug in
and we're not going to move overnight
that means that the propeller the gory
folding prop
is actually left open in the reverse
position
so when we move off the next day the
propeller is still in the reverse
position
in other words it's in the overdrive
position so to
get back into normal dry position i go
forward until i've got about five knots
of weight which we've got right now in
the overdrive
position then i bring her back into
neutral
that's neutral then take it into reverse
and give it a quick blast like that
and that feathers the prop now
into the closed position so when we go
back into forward
we are now as you can hear from the revs
being so high
back into the normal dry position of the
prop so this is an idiosyncrasy or a
feature of the gory folding prop
and it's actually taken me three years
to get my head around
that simple maneuver there's very little
instruction on this
on the on the interwebs so hopefully if
you're thinking about a gory folding
prop
you'll find that interesting onwards
not sure if this camera will pick this
up but there is quite a bit of swell
rolling along here and that is quite
surprising how much swell there is
considering it was so calming in that
bay last night which was quite exposed
to
this portion of water this is the
anchorage we were in
and the swell is coming in from this
angle here
so it was quite uh quite nicely
protected in there now today we are
going past the greek island of coss and
we're going to try and not provoke any
international incidents by staying
on the on the borderline between greece
and turkey
we just had a change of plan we were
going to
kachookbook but we've had a chat with
our friend jim
and he's up and he did it in uh bay
which is
in the did in bay area so
we are going to head up there and meet
up with him
in order to do that we really need to
increase our speed so
we brought the sails out but we're also
still motor sailing
because there isn't really that much
wind we're hoping that there's enough
wind
to give us just an extra knot and that
will make
the journey a little bit shorter so um
what's our speed captain 7.4
7.4 that's pretty okay
we should get there before dark now
off our started side is mainland turkey
and bodrum is over in that direction
there
we are about to go around that headland
there and take a right however off our
port side is the northern tip of the
greek island of kos
this camera probably won't pick it up
but this is a quite a major town here
and i can see a huge fortification on
the uh on the coastline there so
presumably a very important place
in ancient times that came under attack
quite a lot
just hear the head sail flogging this uh
wind is very inconsistent at the moment
and we're not sure what will happen once
we get around the corner
we'll wait and see just had an
interesting phone call with my mate mike
from cash marina
he's out about at the moment he's
actually just going into
basically where we were a couple of
nights ago
and he he informed us we don't watch the
tv in fact we don't have any tv
reception
we don't buy newspapers we stay away
from all that
he's just informed me that during the
month of ramadan
here in turkey that the turkish
government has now
basically banned travel between the
provinces of turkey so for example
cash marina is in in antalya province
where we are right now is mueller
province and where we were planning to
stop at the next seto marina which is uh
kushidasa
that is in the next province up which is
izmir
so we can't pass between the borders of
those
provinces the usual curfews for the
weekend are happening so no travel at
weekends saturday and sunday and also
no travel from seven o'clock at night
until
five o'clock in the morning that really
doesn't affect us because we travel
during the daylight hours anyway
so we're gonna head up to this anchorage
which is just to the
east of did him we're going to meet up
with jim on acheron
we're going to sit down and have a chat
with him and
figure out what we're going to do
luckily the province of mueller
is very big the coastline is very large
and there's lots and lots of places that
we can explore
that's what's happening with the
lockdowns in turkey during the month of
ramadan
[Applause]
the plans of sailors are written in the
sand at low tide
we're so close to greece that island is
coss that we can see one of the greek
ferries the blue star ferries
[Applause]
[Music]
[Applause]
this is the tip of the bodrum peninsula
that we are going around
so we'll be going around there
[Applause]
[Applause]
well it's only 20 meters deep here
so we're thinking that that boy there is
for fishing boats to tie up to when they
go fishing
that's a d marin marina
[Music]
that's look in there
and we visited there last time we were
in turkey you can find out all about
gamuche look
if you go to our anchorage's series
basically we're heading in the right
direction for the bay that we're going
to get into
there's an isolated danger just up ahead
once we pass that
a couple of degrees to starboard and
we'll bang on course
and about two hours out if the wind
keeps blowing like it is
so not bad
knots at the moment we did get 8.1 knots
at one point that was a bit exciting
it was almost almost break out the
bottle of champagne
[Music]
the head cell was flogging so we put it
away
and now look how the boat's moving from
side to side
against the clouds that's a bit better
it's not moving quite so much
[Applause]
[Music]
[Applause]
we're going around there nearly there
it's been a long haul
that's where we've got to go and
we can finally see acheron on ais
but before we can anchor we're going to
put this baby away
[Music]

i think i know why mantis has made a
mark ii of its chain hook
do you want to explain as much as i love
manta's products you'll hear me raving
on about mantis anchor quite a lot
and we sort this out in athens in greece
and it is a super piece of metal
however the design fault is this little
piece of plastic
and you know when i bought it i thought
surely that's an accident waiting to
happen
because every time you hook this in and
out you've got to
lift it up to get that little plastic
bit
over the metal well the thing is it's
it's eventually going to
get a str stress fracture here and break
which it did
so um i don't know love my mantis
products
but this one bit of a disappointment
really
not sure what we're gonna do it still
stays on the chain because of the design
um but you know you've not got that
locking security mechanism anymore
it still works it still does its job
we'll see what ident can come up before
we get back to cash
well maybe mantis would like to give us
a mark two to try and review
maybe would you reckon mantis we are
anchored
just east of did him in a bay called
akbook and this is a
super well protected spot particularly
from the wind that is coming into
this area on saturday as you can see
that is gusting up to 37 38 39 knots
and it's coming from the south so we're
going to just
relocate our anchor and
obviously our boat position in this bay
to give us a little bit more protection
from that southern wind
uh actually we're just gonna go a little
bit further south
into this bay
so yeah we will uh we will be having to
do this at night
but the great thing is as i say we've
got our marks on the shore
and we're fairly confident that mantis
is not going anywhere
boat life eh
