In this episode of Sailing A B Sea we get caught up in naval war games and the Turkish navy turns us back to our anchorage several times.
We departed Gocek and ended up anchoring in Ekincik, but when we tried to leave there to go to Marmaris, we had the Turkish navy turn us back while they carried out week long war games.

Okay so um can you... No one at a time. Can you take this first
Got another one that needs to... Do another pass Jim
I'm Barry. I'm Aannsha. This is the continuing journey of Sailing A B Sea. Well I just nixed
the Göcek the plan. Look, Göcek is a huge area and we can spend all day
putting our nose into every single bay. They may be busy, there may be spaces, maybe this or maybe
that but the thing is I can't take a chance that we're going to run out of time for us to get to
an anchorage where we can just drop anchor and swing freely. All this line ashore stuff
it's it's just too stressful it's as simple as that. It's too stressful. So we're going to
find a place where we can drop anchor and swing freely and that's not inside the Göcek area
Aannsha please remind me how much I need to pay you for the gin over. Hello Dave
Okay so um can you... no, one at a time. Can you take this first
We've got another one that needs to ... Do another pass Jim. Yeah okay.
Ooh precious cargo. No worries. Thank you.
Ooohh!
One more time. Thank you. Hello, how're you doing man? Good to see you
Jim laughs. That was fun! Good
sail. No worries. See you somewhere. See you somewhere. All right take it easy
I owe you for the tonic water!
Leech line probably needs tightening but I'm not going up there now
but we are getting 7.2 knots. We are motor sailing of course and getting 7.2 knots with
the combination of iron sail and sail sail um the reason why we're doing that is because we
really can't afford to slow down, we need to get to this potential next stop and suss it out. We
don't know what to expect when we get there and if it's not right then we've got to move
on and that's at least another hour and a half further on. Basically I've just had enough today
I just wanna stop now!
I'd had enough Göcek to be honest with you
Some days you just have days like that but at least we've got the sails up. We've got the sails out it's nice
It's a lovely sunny day it is um nice breeze so long as you rug up. Should be catching Kev up who stormed
ahead while we were doing the the gin exchange. Yeah the gin exchange. While we were bootlegging gin!
All right so go to 30 at the roller. 30 to the waterline? Yeah 30 to the waterline. And then snub it.
This sailboat that's heading out, unless he's planning on going southeast he's going to be
turned around by those big boys on the horizon. That's just four of seven naval ships that we've
seen so far this morning outside the bay here at Ekincik and our mate Kev who did leave
earlier than us and wanted to go around that corner to the Marmaris area uh got contacted on
the radio by them and they said we're doing live firing exercises in this area today
so therefore the only option you've got is to go south east. Well we've just come from the south east
so we're not going back there. So Kev has come back into the bay and uh he's trying out a different
anchorage just around this corner here. So he's going to let us know what that anchorage is like
see if it's any more protection than this one here which is quite exposed um and does have a
little bit of swell coming in every now and then. So looks like we're staying here today. Kev was
advised that uh he can move at eight o'clock tonight when they finished playing war games
It's quarter past seven Thursday morning and we are still here at the bay of Ekincik. The reason
why we're leaving so early is because we want to get to Marmaris and we want to spend the weekend
in the marina at Marmaris. Now yesterday we were prevented from leaving by the navy having war
games off the coast here and as we look out at the horizon again we can still see many of the
warships gathering so we're going to try and get out and turn right and go to Marmaris. Uh obviously
the radio's on if we get hailed we get hailed if not we make a run for it at six knots. Right yes!
We came out and um there were several other yachts two ahead of us, one behind us and uh
navy naval ships uh just basically said you must... if you can go anywhere you can go southeast
back to Fethiy and if you want to circumvent our area you've got to go 60 miles to the south
east and go around us. Apparently we can't even hug the coast here
but to my mind they wouldn't be firing any live rounds anywhere near the Turkish coast
But... It must be a real safety issue like they've probably got safety protocols. But the thing is
they said they were firing live rounds yesterday and they weren't because we didn't hear any
This is very frustrating. Now we've got to go back to Ekincik and my question is what happens if
you're on a yacht charter for a week and you've got to get your boat back to Marmaris, how do you
do it? And do the charter companies let people know so that they don't get caught out because that's
something the charter companies should be aware of so there aren't lots of stressed people trying to
get back to home base. We haven't been blown out of the water yet! It's just so annoying, so so annoying. It's just the way it is
But I don't want to spend another night in Ekincik. Yeah well you've got to.
It seems like most of these Turkish towns we call into one of the street dogs adopts
us and says oh I'll take you where you need to go, where are you going? Today we've got this one here. He's lovely
Where are we going?
We're going to get goats. Save a leg for me. Get the slowest one
We only want one, there's a leg each! Get a big one if we're gonna eat it
Hello goats
Oops. She's protecting her babies. This one's got its leg caught
How are we gonna? I don't know because those horns are quite big. Yeah the little one's got a leg caught
And mummy's definitely gonna... and those horns are uh big
Mmm. Oh no! Okay, she's free! It's all sorted. Okay!
Well done little fella. It's a girl. Girl. Okay. Hello big fella. You could be a girl as well
Thank you for protecting us from those vicious goats! Scary so scary!
All right maybe we should have followed this road. Maybe. Maybe. Thanks Baz the Explorer! Well you know
the path less trodden and all that sort of stuff. We're going this way
Well here we are shoreside and on the horizon we
can see our naval escort that's uh protecting us from leaving the bay
We've actually got a little bit of a plan that I'll tell you about later. This restaurant
here is expecting some customers today because they're bringing all the sunbed cushions out
Right next to the spillway that brings the runoff mountain water down to the sea
There's A B Sea parked right there
Once you've parked your dinghy at the little harbour area then if you follow the road
out you eventually will come to uh two or three different little supermarkets. They sell
alcohol, they sell bread and bits and pieces. You'll basically get some food that
will tide you over until you get to the next stop where the big supermarkets are. This
is the first supermarket you'll come to and uh it pretty much has mini mart sort of items
that you can expect. Aannsha's just about to go in and get whatever she needs
This one's called the confused grocery! Lost in translation I think! This restaurant also has uh
alcohol sales, it's called the Alcohol House and they have a fair range of spirits wines and beers
Here's just a little tip for you if you are shopping in Turkey and you look at things
and you're confused, well which is going to be the tastiest and the best? We found that this brand
Pinar actually uh do a whole range of food from frozen foods to this yogurty drink Ayran and if
you see the the brand Pinar you can be fairly confident that you're going to pay a fair price
and get good quality. Here's a nice sign you won't see in a lot of places: We are so glad
to have you in our region we're as close to you as a phone call for your safety and well-being
That's the Jandarmas on 156. What's this departing Ekincik Take 3? Well yeah
pretty much feels like it! Yeah uh there's been a lot of um discussion and a lot of
misaligning information. Uh finally Ruth got in touch with the Turkish coast guard who said
we were allowed to transit the zone from six o'clock onwards so it's now uh coming up to 5 30.
we prepped the boat, we're about to bring the anchor up and uh head out to the head or the outside of
the bay ready ready - in readiness - ready to leave at six. Yeah. On the dot. Yeah looks like these guys are as well
They've got the same plan yeah. So this is yeah getting frustrating now it's ridiculous
you know you hear so many different times and so many different dates and so many different rules
and regs. Can I just say something to my astrology friends? I'm just going to say Mercury Retrograde
I'm just going to say left hand right hand. All right let's see what we can do
this time and let's see if we can make it to Marmaris. Rght I'll get the snubber, hey? Might as well. It's a good start isn't it? Yeah.
It's going to be a tough three hours I think if it stays like this. Wind's right on the nose
Sea state's one and a half / two metres
These waves are really slowing us down. Woa
Drop it. Go to 30.
Well overall not a bad parking position considering I came in in the dark and had to guess distances from the other boats that we were parking amongst
So this is Marmaris in the northern sector in fact the north east sector
and that is Kev on Barbara Ann and he's just upping his anchor and heading
into Marmaris marina. He needs to get some repairs done to his outboard. He's in eight metres of water
there, we're in 12 metres of water here, so once he's up and gone we're going to take his position
You want to bring that snubber up?
Did you know that for less than the price of a cup of coffee you can become
