In this episode of Sailing A B Sea, after many people ask us how useful is AIS, we show you how we use our AIS system on board A B Sea and why we think that it's really useful.

The next vessel of interest for us isΒ this guy here, he's doing 6.9 knots andΒ Β
the closest possible approach should be 310 feet.Β Oh! Change that 164 feet in nine and a half minutesΒ Β
He's gonna come around this headland, we're wantingΒ to go around that headland, we'll see what happensΒ Β
Once he gets around there we don't know whetherΒ he's going straight out here, whether he's going to
curve around there or whether he's want to goΒ where we've come from. We've just gotta wait and seeΒ Β
I'm Barry, I'm Aannsha, this is the continuingΒ journey of Sailing A B Sea. Baz is just looking at theΒ Β
furling mechanism because it gets a bit stiff. The reason why it's not completely unfurlingΒ Β
is because there's too much line on the drum soΒ when we put it away and we get to our next anchorageΒ Β
we'll release the sheets and then get someΒ of the furling line off the drum and leaveΒ Β
just one turn of furling line on the drum andΒ that way when we do bring it out there's moreΒ Β
space for more line to go around the drum. Looking inside at the drum we can see thatΒ Β
we've got at least two wraps, maybe two and aΒ half wraps around the drums still remainingΒ Β
with the sail fully furled away. First thingΒ I notice is that the two wraps that are hereΒ Β
are actually crossed over each other uh insteadΒ of being flat against the drum so it's off to aΒ Β
bad start because we've got double the thicknessΒ at the very beginning. We only want two wraps ofΒ Β
the sheets around the head sail up there, whenΒ we finish doing this we'll probably have threeΒ Β
maybe even four wraps of the sheets so we needΒ to just reduce that to two once the job's done
So what I want to do now is takeΒ that to its fullest out which isΒ Β
there and then I'm going to wrap that around oneΒ full turn and that'll do it. So now you can seeΒ Β
we've got a couple more wraps of the sheets aroundΒ the head sail and we only want the two that weΒ Β
normally have so what we've got to do now is justΒ pass the sheets around the sail a couple of timesΒ Β
and then put them back through the pulleys and putΒ a stopper knot in and reattach them to the winches
[Sound of a kiss, kiss, kiss]
Hehe, Kissebuku. Kissebuku. We are here
Here on the east side of the bay thereΒ are the remains of a 5th century ADΒ Β
church and tomb and general support buildingsΒ surrounding it. Uh it's in pretty bad nick I guessΒ Β
and um we can see evidence that the archaeologistsΒ have been here, left a couple of signs telling usΒ Β
roughly what it is and work has stopped I guessΒ and this church wall looking into the churchΒ Β
and the tomb at the other end there. And theΒ tomb has remnants of plaster which showed thatΒ Β
artwork in the style... in a frescoΒ style was was painted in there
In the overall scheme of things we areΒ definitely here, in fact A B Sea is probablyΒ Β
parked somewhere around about there maybe aΒ little bit closer and right now we are standing here
Right now there's a bunch ofΒ archaeologists actually restoring the siteΒ Β
and as we come across them they'reΒ sitting down having their tea breakΒ Β
but they're doing a great job itΒ looks really really good. Merhaba!
and it looks like the thing that they areΒ restoring is the number two bath house
It's bright! The sun's bright! The sun gets up early it's uhΒ quarter past seven Friday morningΒ Β
and we are leaving Kissebuku. We are going to Yalikavak. Yeah we've been there before um but we're goingΒ Β
there today. It involves going around a veryΒ big headland and technically fighting into theΒ Β
northern prevailing wind which we don't want to doΒ we've done that far too often and it's not fun soΒ Β
we're going early we'll get there early ... HopefullyΒ before the worst of it picks up. Yeah we're goingΒ Β
to stay there for the weekend because the windΒ does pick up even stronger from the north andΒ
where we're going to be anchored we'll be sheltered. SoΒ it's a five hour run and also we need provisionsΒ Β
we're out of beer. And my whisky that you finished offΒ yesterday because you didn't have any beer leftΒ Β
Yeah needs must! I just gotta say a good morningΒ toTerry Ball, Terry is our newest patronΒ Β
Welcome aboard Terry it's great to have you withΒ us, thank you for joining. Cheers and uh yeah you'veΒ Β
just joined us in time for a five hour trip toΒ Yalikavak. Hope you brought your sailing glovesΒ Β
Yeah and hopefully this time we'll be actuallyΒ anchoring without the sail out this time! YesΒ Β
cast your mind back to the video that's in theΒ link up above. Yeah all right see when we get there!
I'm gonna rinse it. Okay
Even thoughI'm the stand onΒ vessel I've just reduced my speedΒ Β
uh because well most of these gulet captains just wantΒ to get there and they don't care about the rulesΒ Β
and regulations and I like care about not crashingΒ the boat. Let him go in front of us and carry onΒ Β
It's only 7 30 in the morning and I am totallyΒ surprised although I kind of shouldn't be I'mΒ Β
surprised that there are 14 vessels already onΒ the move all moving in various directions. I'veΒ Β
got a couple of them lit up on AIS because weΒ may get close but we probably won't. The thingΒ Β
is it's now the 2nd of July 2021 and the generalΒ curfew across Turkey has been lifted it's almostΒ Β
totally normal now, the only thing I think they'reΒ not allowing it any more is music after midnight soΒ Β
it's not so bad. Um so I think everyone has goneΒ right okay that's my holiday it starts firstΒ Β
of July and everyone is out and of course allΒ the gulet owner operators are making the most of itΒ Β
and recouping income that they've lost over theΒ last year and certainly the beginning of this yearΒ Β
so it's just crazy how busy it gets like somebodyΒ switched on the light switch. There's a vessel justΒ Β
about to come around that headland. I've got threeΒ there, another one here, this one is of interestΒ Β
and into the rising sun there are another sevenΒ vessels. Because we left so early our ETA at
Yalikavak is now 12:25 which will be great becauseΒ the sun will be in a perfect position for us toΒ Β
look at the water and be able to see through itΒ and we're also going to get fuel while we're there
The next vessel of interest for us is this guyΒ here he's doing 6.9 knots and the closest possibleΒ Β
approach should be 310 feet. Oh! Change that 164Β feet in nine and a half minutes. He's going toΒ Β
come around this headland, we're wanting to goΒ around that headland so we'll uh we'll see whatΒ Β
happens once he gets around there we don't knowΒ whether he's going straight out here whether he'sΒ Β
got a curve around there or whether he's wanting toΒ go where we've come from. We've just got to wait and seeΒ Β
That's the guy of interest. It's just anotherΒ yacht like us and he's maintaining his headingΒ Β
so it looks like we'll be going behind him
He's quite safely gone by soΒ we'll wave good morning to themΒ Β
That's a very enthusiastic wave wasn't it?Β It was a very enthusiastic waveΒ Β
and now we can quite happily remove themΒ from our watch list on the AIS, put it on autoΒ Β
get out of there and we can come out of our oneΒ nautical mile radius to our usual three or sixΒ Β
next point we're going around is this pointΒ here and right now there's nothing on the AIS
and there's also nothing visually that weΒ have to be concerned about. In recent episodesΒ Β
we've been mentioning here and there bits andΒ pieces about our Gory folding propeller and ifΒ Β
you're thinking about getting one today is aΒ perfect example of a day where the Gory foldingΒ Β
prop really comes into its prime. We're actuallyΒ driving in overdrive at the moment with the propΒ Β
so basically the prop is still open in the reverseΒ blade position so we're getting 6.6 knots of speedΒ Β
at and 1750 reps so lower revs, similar sort ofΒ speed as you'd normally get, so there is a fuelΒ Β
saving component in that calculation. This fella's a bitΒ close. I've been watching him on the AIS and he'sΒ Β
changed his course slightly so that we will missΒ each other by about 340 feet in a minute or lessΒ Β
takes nerves of steel sometimes
Phew!
Here's a perfect example of what the wind willΒ do. Right now we can see the wind is prettyΒ Β
much on our nose and it's coming up to 18Β knots, very usable sort of wind 17/18 knotsΒ Β
but we're going straight into it and we're on aΒ course for where we want to go. Let's just comeΒ Β
out another way, we're going to turn the cornerΒ here and we're going to head in a northwestΒ Β
direction. What are the odds that that wind onceΒ we get around this corner will be coming fromΒ Β
that direction? Let's have a look when we getΒ there. Breakfast and lunch rolled into one
Sweet chilli sauce on chicken and homemade coleslaw
Get the recipe! Mine's withoutΒ the chilli sauce and with egg. Yum.
And that's the backdrop forΒ breakfast. Pretty good hey?
That's the northern tip of the Greek island ofΒ Kos over there and um we've been past here soΒ Β
many times now there's a guy in on the secondΒ floor apartment on the left of that buildingΒ Β
in the middle, every time we go past he wavesΒ and holds up a sign saying "Hi A B Sea!" True story!Β Β
This might look like a lot of sailsΒ on the horizon but they're actuallyΒ Β
munchkins we call them. Um the littleΒ munchkin boats the um training boatsΒ Β
for the kids and looks like they're having aΒ bit of a race because we can see the yellowΒ Β
buoys set out at various points and they gottaΒ go around, at the course of the yellow buoys soΒ Β
uh could be a race, could be a competition, could beΒ just training, but the munchkins are out having funΒ Β
Oh look we've come around the corner and we'reΒ heading north west well more north northwestΒ Β
look at the wind: right on the nose! It's droppedΒ a bit though it's only 11 knots now. I shouldΒ Β
have put money on that shouldn't I? Just turned theΒ corner and the bay of Yalikavak opens up before usΒ Β
looking at the AIS, looking through the binocularsΒ it's looking very busy uh obviously a height ofΒ Β
the season very different from when we wereΒ here last in uh April and uh yeah there's bigΒ Β
big expensive boats in here so we're gonna poke our nose in have a look you never know thereΒ Β
might be just space for a little one to squeezeΒ in uh if not we'll have to go to plan B or CΒ Β
This is where I start to get a nervousΒ feeling in my stomach: large vesselsΒ Β
leaving the marina, there's small power boatsΒ dinghies, another vessel leaving the marina, aΒ Β
jet ski and a whole fleet of munchkins all movingΒ backwards and forwards across here. That bay thereΒ
is where we're hoping to drop the hook. From thisΒ distance it looks fairly empty, let's hope that'sΒ Β
the case when we get there but uh yeah a lot toΒ keep an eye on while trying to figure out whereΒ Β
we're going to drop the hook. Let out anotherΒ 10 anyway. Now? Okay. Yeah let ten out now. Okay
Nice parking Baz. We're in! We're in! We got inΒ at 12:15 and we dropped anchor in 10 metresΒ Β
of good holding sand. I'm going to check it as soonΒ as we've had our little chat with you. The thingΒ Β
is though I think we got lucky getting this spotΒ yeah we're right here and I don't think anyone canΒ Β
seriously get in in front of usΒ because we're as close to the swimΒ Β
zones - marker zones - as possible and uh we're far enoughΒ away from our very rich neighboursΒ Β
uh not to be in their face. YeahΒ we're the poor kids on the block!Β Β
But you know. They were all nice they, all theΒ ones that saw us waved at is on the way inΒ Β
so they're rich but they're nice. Yeah. So thisΒ is Yalikavak in Turkey and uh it's very veryΒ Β
much different from when we were here in April, itΒ is absolutely chocker and uh there's even peopleΒ Β
going around on jet skis and one of the blokesΒ on a jet ski over there just got shouted outΒ Β
by the Turks on the white boat behind usΒ going "Oi [ __ ] off with that thing!"Β Β
in Turkish. That's what we're imaginingΒ they said. That's what I would have said! Haha!
So we're going to be here for a coupleΒ of days today's Friday we've gotΒ Β
wind coming in Saturday and Sunday we'reΒ in a top spot for being uh protected fromΒ Β
the wind yeah and uh we're also... It's really pretty too...Β It's a big town over there so we can go andΒ Β
get provisions. Yeah. I'm sure there's goingΒ to be loud music at some point coming fromΒ Β
but... somewhere... but it's pretty, it's really prettyΒ it's like they've got white buildings, lots ofΒ Β
green trees, pink bougainvillea, palm trees, sand. All we need now is some beer. Yeah ... and whisky
I don't know what she's talking about... [Aannsha whistles]
All right, I'm gonna check the anchor now. OkayΒ
Hey if you're enjoying what we're doing hereΒ on Sailing A B Sea then there's two things youΒ Β
can do to really help us out. The first thingΒ is to give every video you watch a thumbs upΒ Β
and also on every video leave a comment downΒ below, even if you're just saying "Hi love theΒ Β
video, catch you next week!" It all helpsΒ us out in ways that you can not imagine
