In this episode of Sailing A B Sea we continue traveling north up the coast of Turkey and find ourselves asking what is that stench as we round a headland.

That's fish oil on the water andΒ as we come around to this bay hereΒ Β
There's a really strong smell. It's pretty powerfulΒ Β
it's just hard to describe, it's not kind ofΒ really fishy but it's just a horrible stench. Oh!Β Β
I know what it is. If you stuck your head in a jarΒ of fish food flakes, that's the smell. Times ten
I'm Barry, I'm Aannsha, this is theΒ continuing journey of Sailing A B Sea
We're doing our usual thing ofΒ checking out the local doner durumsΒ Β
we spotted this place and weΒ thought we'd give it a shout. So doner durums
We're gonna check them out, give them a score out of 10. The
service was great the price was fantastic. It was tasty. Nine Aussie dollars for two of us
Taste-wise on a scale of 1 - 10. I'd probably give it a er ... Eight? No, erm
Look if we're holding Kas as the 10/10
I'm going to give that forΒ taste I'm going to give that one
a six out of 10. Ooh harsh. Yeah. This is soΒ pretty you've gotta see it. So the back streets of umΒ Β
Yalikavak are littered with little shopsΒ and places where you can sit down to eat. It'sΒ Β
really very nice. So justΒ another question of getting offΒ Β
your boat, tying up your dinghy where it'sΒ safe and having to wander around, you'll like it
If you're provisioning in Yalikavak thenΒ the Macro center has a really great range ofΒ Β
food but uh it's certainly not going to be veryΒ budget-friendly. We did shop for some things inΒ Β
there and uh well we're lucky we got out withoutΒ having to take out a mortgage but really reallyΒ Β
excellent food. This town is big enough to supportΒ several supermarkets there are the usual Bim andΒ Β
the A101 and Migros as well as the Macro and alsoΒ a Carrefour Gurme which is a place that we alsoΒ Β
went which has a great range of stuff. While we'reΒ here we thought we'd check out the marina andΒ Β
quite tight security to get in, HES code obviouslyΒ um but also there's a x-ray machine for your bagsΒ Β
and camera so you would feel that your boat wasΒ secure if you had it here. Definitely unless theΒ Β
robber's got a HES code and is not carryingΒ anything that might be lock picking material. True
You know which part of town you're inΒ when you see shops like Louis VuittonΒ Β
and Rolls Royce dealership in the marina.
His and her pirates.
We're gonna get some fuel now
We are we're leaving uh Yalikovak today andΒ heading further, well an hour north and thenΒ Β
uh two hours east. We've been here for nearly aΒ week yeah and uh that's a long time in one spotΒ Β
so fuel, pump out and head north. Yeah despiteΒ the increasing gusts of wind from the northΒ Β
Yeah it's only an hour north and thenΒ the rest of it's east. Yeah. Let's crack on
So that was 111.85 litres of diesel. OnceΒ again you know our calculations on our hourlyΒ Β
uh consumption were overestimated which is goodΒ that means we're uh we've always got more inΒ Β
the tank than we think we have so this is good.Β Now we're just waiting for the Yalikovak marinaΒ Β
guys to come and do the pump out because the fuelΒ guy and the marina are totally separate entitiesΒ Β
so apparently the marina guys haveΒ got to do the pump out thingy so goodΒ Β
If you want to check that your GPS is spot on doΒ something like this. We are definitely in that slot
The head sail's giving us anΒ extra knot of speed of the ground
That's a fish farm over there
There's actually quite a few.Β We're going to this island here
and we're about half an hour away
A big fishing net thereΒ Β
It's quite interesting to seeΒ these because these are actuallyΒ Β
look like they're really being worked whereas aΒ lot of the other ones that we've shown you beforeΒ Β
seem to be just more static sitting there butΒ there's a lot of activity going on around this one
We have arrived. We are at Salih Adasi, which is aΒ little island. Yeah not even marked on some of theΒ Β
anchorage websites uh it is marked on our chartΒ so we thought we'd stop here and uh it's prettyΒ Β
good um it's kind of well protected, I meanΒ right now it's early morning and it's flat asΒ Β
a pancake but once that meltemi picks up in theΒ afternoon the shape of the land here funnels inΒ Β
the wind in an odd way and so we do get quiteΒ a bit of large waves coming in from the southΒ Β
pretty much or southwest. Even though it's aΒ north northwest wind blowing. Yeah. Yeah butΒ Β
um even so it's not been rolly and it's notΒ been uncomfortable. It's been a little bitΒ Β
there's been movement. It is a very very busyΒ spot, the channel has a lot of boats going upΒ Β
and down it and so eventually you do get theirΒ wake coming in. Yeah. This particular anchorageΒ Β
is popular to say the least, lots of dayΒ trippers. I mean it's the middle of summer soΒ Β
you know, I suppose you can expect that. But theyΒ do like to play music very loud and as an ex-DJ
I can tell you it is out of order.Β He's just a grumpy old man now isn't he?Β Β
No I mean it's stupidly loud. We're anchored in nineΒ metres of sand here the water's really clearΒ Β
there are some small patches of weed but hardlyΒ anything to be concerned about. One of the kind ofΒ Β
interesting things about this littleΒ island is that there are about five or sixΒ Β
abandoned villas that are just um on the bay hereΒ and um we thought that we might go and have a lookΒ Β
at them this morning? Yeah maybe? Maybe or maybeΒ when we come back? We kind of, we've been here forΒ Β
what three days? Three nights. Three nights andΒ we're sort of like eager to move on actually umΒ Β
so we may come back here on the way back and it'sΒ quite possible it might not be as busy because itΒ Β
will be later in the season. It's a place that'sΒ worth coming to because it's slightly out ofΒ Β
the way and it's certainly not as busy as some ofΒ the other anchorages that we've been to that areΒ Β
along the popular route so we're going to get theΒ dinghy up now and we'll just have another look atΒ Β
a couple of options where we're going to goΒ today and uh we'll see when we're on the move
What?
I saw it popping into the anchor lockerΒ but I didn't see it coming loose becauseΒ Β
it was directly under the chainΒ as it was coming up. Easy fix
Around that promontory there is a littleΒ fishing town and it's got a Migros Jet andΒ Β
quite a few restaurants thereΒ there are also quite a fewΒ Β
hotels along the inlet to the bay so if youΒ are anchored anywhere around here you can getΒ Β
provisions. As we leave the abandoned villas atΒ Salih Adasi on this little island if anybody knowsΒ Β
why they were abandoned we'd be really interestedΒ to find out. Just tell us in the comments below
That's fish oil on the water andΒ as we come around to this bay hereΒ Β
there's a really strong smell. It's pretty powerful.Β It's just hard to describe. It's not kind of reallyΒ Β
fishy but it's just a horrible stench. Oh! I know what it is. If you stuck your head in a jarΒ Β
of fish food flakes. That's the smell! Times ten! Found out the fish farm culprit is just there
Aww, yep, definitely. He's the originator of the smell!
So this is our plan A anchorage andΒ uh on the chart there's plenty ofΒ Β
fish farms and we can actually see aΒ couple of them but we don't know howΒ Β
you know whether that one is actually trulyΒ there so we're just going to poke our noseΒ Β
in and have a look see. Yeah because they seemΒ to move them around don't they? They do yeah
It's actually looking quite clear in the bay
This water is so clear, we're in five metres isΒ that right Baz? Yeah. And we can see our anchor
So it's dug into sand. It looks as if, seeΒ that darker patch there, it looks thatΒ Β
like that might be a rocky bed not sureΒ because it did drag for a little while. Yeah you can see the line where
it came and dragged and then it finallyΒ found what it wanted. Yeah. Yeah. So we pulled backΒ Β
and now she's come back to sit on her anchorΒ which she likes to do but you see the chainΒ Β
It's so clear, such a lovely bay. Like approachingΒ it it just looked like a big flatΒ Β
nothingness but as we came further inΒ um it's just got potential for walks and
swimming
Oh there's an old building over thereΒ we passed three or four little umΒ Β
fishing houses uh where I think localΒ fishermen live but apart from that it'sΒ Β
absolutely still and quiet and peaceful and asΒ I said gorgeous. Can't wait to get in the waterΒ Β
Aydeniz Koyu. Quite surprising. The approachΒ you think um that looks sketchy doesn't look likeΒ Β
much. Too many fish farms. There is that umΒ but then if you actually take the time toΒ Β
stick your nose in and have a proper look itΒ is spot on um probably only enough room for usΒ Β
um but I don't think this is going to be a popularΒ place, won't be any tourist day tripper boats hereΒ Β
and it's not marked as an anchorage anywayΒ so people are not likely to be looking for itΒ Β
It's really lovely. Yeah. It's kind of theΒ place that people like us like to find. YeahΒ Β
Actually um learned about this place from KevΒ and Dee on Sailing Kejstrel. Yeah thank you. YesΒ Β
Good find guys let's not tell anyone where it is. Shhh...
So let's go to land and fly the drone!
Yeah. Can we can we can we go? Yes yes weΒ can go. And do that. Yay. Oh by the way umΒ Β
I found this in the anchor locker. I wasΒ a bit concerned about it because it justΒ Β
suddenly dropped in when I was bringing upΒ the anchor this morning and I've found outΒ Β
where it's come from. Just at the front there'sΒ a sort of little plastic plate that's got fourΒ Β
bolts and nuts holding it together and it's comeΒ out of there so it's nothing majorly importantΒ Β
I'll find a nut for it unless we can findΒ the one that's in the anchor locker yeahΒ Β
and uh put some Loctite on it and check theΒ others while I'm in there. Next week on SailingΒ Β
A B Sea we fly the drone and we head furtherΒ north along the Turkish coast to Didim. If
you enjoyed this video please give us a thumbs upΒ it really helps us out more than you can imagineΒ Β
and if you're not already a subscriber clickΒ the subscribe button we'd appreciate that
