In this episode of Sailing A B Sea we are exploring Ephesus in Turkey. There's evidence of human settlement at the site from 7,000 BC, but building of the actually city of Ephesus started in the 10th century BC. It is a huge site situated very close to the Turkish town of Kusadasi, where we were enjoying our stay at the marina, so we hopped on a bus and went exploring.

I gotta say hello and a big thank you toΒ Mark Patterson. He recently watched episodeΒ Β
85 where we swapped out theΒ furling line for our headsailΒ Β
and at the time when I was puttingΒ it all back together I thoughtΒ Β
that's a kind of a flimsy way of doing things...Β Well Mark's actually pointed out something thatΒ Β
when it's pointed out is blatantly obvious soΒ I'm going to show you exactly what we did wrongΒ Β
and what we should have done and I'm actuallyΒ going to do what we should have done right nowΒ Β
I'm Barry, I'm Aannsha, this is the continuingΒ journey of Sailing A B Sea. Friday morningΒ Β
and the plan that we had to rent a car for aΒ couple of days didn't pan out because we didn'tΒ Β
take into consideration the fact that it is theΒ height of summer and nobody has any cars availableΒ Β
for two days when they can have them availableΒ to someone who wants to rent it for a weekΒ Β
so we're actually sitting on a bus - dolmus. We areΒ going to the site of Ephesus so this time aroundΒ Β
while we're in the Kusadasi area we're only goingΒ to go to Ephesus, next time we're in the area weΒ Β
will make sure we get ourselves to Pamakkale, but today... I'm so looking forward to it because IΒ Β
heard about it when I was a little girl so it'sΒ been something I've wanted to see for decades
So those are the horse-drawnΒ carriages that you can get fromΒ Β
the town of Selcuk uh and they'll take you hereΒ and obviously you can get them back from hereΒ Β
to there. Oh that stinks. Yeah that little pooΒ bag didn't work did it? No it's got a hole in itΒ Β
I'm sure people know what horse poo looks like. So it was uhΒ 20 minutes or so on the dolmus
and we are a kilometre away from the Ephesus siteΒ um so what we're gonna do is basically just walkΒ Β
a kilometre and we get there. Now the thing isΒ about Ephesus it's got two entrances there'sΒ Β
the upper entrance and the lower entranceΒ ... He's going to the upper entrance ...and
I'm not sure but I think this is the lowerΒ entrance which does of course mean thatΒ Β
we've got to walk up the site but when weΒ come back down we'll be coming downhillΒ Β
Nearly there. And it's kind of a little bit hazyΒ and overcast today which has given us a littleΒ Β
bit of respite from uh from the yeah the heat. YeahΒ yes it looks like a really well spread out site asΒ Β
well doesn't it looking at the aerial photographΒ of it so. Yeah apart from that I don't really knowΒ Β
much about it so... I know it's the height of theΒ summer season and uh this is probably going to beΒ Β
our very first ancient site that we're visitingΒ that um we have to share with a lot of otherΒ Β
people so we're not sure how busy it's going toΒ be but looking at the entrance it looks very veryΒ Β
busy right now. Last time it was busy like thisΒ with queues was when we were in Istanbul wasn't it?Β Β
Yeah yeah that's right yeah so we're notΒ going to be the only tourista in town todayΒ Β
No but at least we've got our museum cardsΒ so that might mean that we can move forwardΒ Β
to a faster different section. Okay we're insideΒ now and uh once you've run the gauntlet of umΒ Β
people trying to sell you water - yeah - they were saying there's no water once you get in thereΒ Β
we go it's okay. It's not enough, you haven't gotΒ enough, you're gonna die! So once you've got pastΒ Β
the water sellers and the people who want to giveΒ you a personal guided tour um getting in is easyΒ Β
we just use our museum cards and straight throughΒ straight straight away. So we're in now, we'veΒ Β
got plenty of water, we're not gonna die, we'reΒ gonna go and show you Ephesus. Okay let's do it
We're currently as high as we're allowed to climbΒ due to areas being cordoned off for restorationΒ Β
work and we're actually two-thirds of the way upΒ of the seating levels. Like we've said this is theΒ Β
biggest amphitheatre we've ever seen and it's inΒ relatively good nick but a lot of that could beΒ Β
down to the restoration work which is obviouslyΒ ongoing here and quite active. But amazing viewsΒ Β
They've also got uh evidence ofΒ human occupation on the Ephesus siteΒ Β
from 7000 BC. Yes, BC. Here are some columns thatΒ are still on site but there are some very darkΒ Β
green very large columns that are in the Hagia Sofia in Istanbul which were taken from Ephesus
Now that is impressive. This is what I wantedΒ to see since I was a little girl. So excited
If you like what we're doing here on SailingΒ A B Sea, then why not consider becoming a PatronΒ Β
There are many different tiers offering manyΒ different rewards so check out the address on theΒ Β
screen right now and find a tier that's suitableΒ for you. It can cost you less than a cup of coffeeΒ Β
a month. We're coming to the upper gate areaΒ of Ephesus and the crowds are thinning hereΒ Β
the heat, the midday heat is absolutely horrendous,Β I feel as I just just walked into a shower withΒ Β
my clothes on and uh Aannsha's having a fewΒ palpitations. Yeah my heart's really beating fastΒ Β
and I'm trying to stop every now and then becauseΒ I'm getting a bit light-headed. So I think we'reΒ Β
at the top so it's all downhill from here and uhΒ when we do get down we'll have run out of our waterΒ Β
and we're going to be able to buy some moreΒ water. It's an amazing site though Baz isn't it? It's huge it isΒ Β
massive and it would take you know more hours thanΒ we've got to take it all in. We'd actually like toΒ Β
get your feedback on these ancient sites that weΒ visit. Leave a comment down below and just letΒ Β
us know do you like them, uh do you not like them,Β why do you like them, why don't you like them, andΒ Β
um yeah just tell us what you think about theseΒ ancient sites we visit and how we present them.Β Β
That just about wraps up our tour around EphesusΒ oh as it's called here Efes. Efes, that rings a bellΒ Β
Plan now is to go out and see if there's anΒ 'orse and cart that will uh take us to Selcuk whereΒ Β
we're gonna have some lunch I think? Yes I thinkΒ we need that, I think it's very late. A sit down, more water
Well we just spoke to the guy with the horseΒ and carriages and um it's 100 lira uh to getΒ Β
the carriage there whereas we can get a dolmus forΒ probably around about five lira. With our budgetΒ Β
we're going on the dolmus. Well it was literallyΒ a five minute ride to the town of uh Solcuk. And
it was only 5 Lira each. Yes. So
pretty good price. Uh we've just stopped in thisΒ Β
basic uh street restaurant in the middleΒ of town about five minutes walk from theΒ Β
bus station. We've got some fizzy water we've gotΒ some fizzy beer and we've got some adana kebabs coming. Yes, can't wait.
Cheers! Water first. Oh, that is so good.
And the restaurant managerΒ or proprietor suggested weΒ Β
have this table because it's got air conditioning
It's got a fan above. Wasn't that a nice thought?
And he turned it up high for us. Adana kebabs have arrived. Yummm!
We've been in Turkey for almost two years nowΒ and it always blows our mind when it comesΒ Β
to paying the bill. We had three beers, twoΒ fizzy waters and two uh adana kebab mealsΒ Β
It came to a total of 138 lira which is close enough to 22 Aussie dollars. 22 Aussie dollars. It's justΒ Β
so affordable. Paid for by not taking the horse and cart. Yeah, horse and cart. Horse and carriage, okay? We're about to head back toΒ Β
the (tesekkurler aferdersin) So it's ... if you come to Selcuk it'sΒ the Kosem restaurant. In this in kind of like aΒ Β
raised square area um just up from up from the busΒ station. So we're going to head back down to theΒ Β
bus station and uh find out when the next bus backΒ to Kusadasi is. Yeah that's another really goodΒ Β
system they've got here these dolmus. They'reΒ little mini buses that run all over the placeΒ Β
and don't have designated stops. Well they do they they'reΒ just somebody just stands on the side of the roadΒ Β
and goes... and they stop and pick them up or ifΒ you want to get off. They do have them yeah butΒ Β
I think you know if you if you kind of hail themΒ because we've seen them do that - yeah - along theΒ Β
country roads - yeah - it's really good. Well thatΒ was a busy bus on the way back it took exactlyΒ Β
30 minutes um he took exactly the same routeΒ and dropped people off along the way at various stopsΒ Β
Now all we got to do is get to Migros,Β get some supplies in, get back to the boat
Shall we splash out on a taxi?
My legs, my feet are knackered. My hips
since yeah since had a bit of hip damage in, where were we, Yalikavak
my hips could do with a rest. All right
taxi time it is there's one over there
Taxi? Marina. Marina, okay
Just as a price comparisonΒ between the dolmlus and a taxiΒ Β
that little trip from where the dolmus stationΒ is in Kusadasi central to the marina entranceΒ Β
was 21 lira whereas the wholeΒ trip from Kusadasi to Selcuk
Selcuk was 20 Lira
If you want to get a taxi from here allΒ the way to Ephesus it's 50 EurosΒ Β
We'll put the conversion on the screen for that
The gypsies are in town! Lol! Ah! Home!
Just recently while we were in Didim it came toΒ that time of year for renewing our boat insuranceΒ Β
We originally insured with Topsail insurance inΒ the UK. They were quite happy to take us on boardΒ Β
as complete and utter novices and basically insureΒ us which was you know really really helpful at theΒ Β
time. When it came to renewal this year their priceΒ uh seemed to go up even though we were gettingΒ Β
discounts so we also had another problem withΒ Topsail in the fact that they wouldn't let us goΒ Β
any further east than 30 degrees in theΒ Mediterranean and that actually rules outΒ Β
Finike marina where we are winter birthing andΒ also Antalya marina which is even further eastΒ Β
So we started looking at alternatives and weΒ found Allianz Insurance in Turkey uh can giveΒ Β
us coverage for the whole of the MediterraneanΒ for a very similar price in fact slightly lowerΒ Β
and the um the thing is with both of theseΒ insurance, I've got to point out, it is an agreedΒ Β
value on the boat, so the agreed value for theseΒ quotes is 99,000 Euros of the value of the boatΒ Β
So let me just give you some prices here. So Topsail in the UK for their renewal, they wanted 1,282Β Euros
and as I said we couldn't go further eastΒ than 30 degrees. Allianz inTurkey 1,206 EurosΒ Β
So basically we're saving 78 Euros, not not aΒ big saving but the bonus is of course with Allianz
in Turkey we are covered for the whole of theΒ Mediterranean area which means we are coveredΒ Β
while we're in our marina berth and when we goΒ further east and explore. So thank you very muchΒ Β
to Samet for organizing our Turkish insurance andΒ also thank you very much to Topsail for taking onΒ Β
complete noobs in the first place. And that'sΒ our update on our boat insurance. I've gotta sayΒ Β
hello and a big thank you to Mark Patterson. HeΒ recently watched Episode 85 where we swapped outΒ Β
the furling line for our headsail and at the timeΒ when I was putting it all back together I thoughtΒ Β
that's a kind of a flimsy way of doing things. WellΒ Mark's actually pointed out something that whenΒ Β
it's pointed out is blatantly obvious. So I'm goingΒ to show you exactly what we did wrong and what weΒ Β
should have done and I'm actually going to do whatΒ we should have done right now. This stainless steelΒ Β
cover that goes all the way around the outside ofΒ the drum is actually held on by these three boltsΒ Β
here. Now if we look at the front of the drumΒ as you can see the stainless steel cover hereΒ Β
goes behind this bit of plastic and the bolt goesΒ through the plastic into the stainless stee. WellΒ Β
let's take a look at the front bit again. Here atΒ the front we've got the bolt going through theΒ Β
stainless steel into the plastic. This stainlessΒ steel should be behind this plastic bit. BasicallyΒ Β
what I've got to do is undo these bolts, try notΒ to lose them overboard and then get this tucked in
behind there like that and now screw in theΒ bolt. There's that one correctly installedΒ Β
and here is the other one correctlyΒ installed. Thank you very much for that MarkΒ Β
that has been a niggling littleΒ thing in the back of my mindΒ Β
ever since we did this job and now it's a jobΒ done properly. You're still watching? Cool!Β Β
Give us a big thumbs up and if you haven't alreadyΒ subscribe and that way you'll get notifications ofΒ Β
future video updates from Sailing A B Sea. UntilΒ we see you next time, stay safe and healthy
