In this episode of Sailing A B Sea the stunning collection of antiquities at Antalya museum leaves us feeling wow just wow. But rain stops play when we arrive at Aspendos Amphitheatre, the most intact Amphitheatre in the region.

Antalya Old Town. Yeah. What a cute place. Gorgeous. And the hotel is absolutely fabulous. Yeah
0:06
Apparently there's uh Ataturk House here. Yeah. It's a little museum. So we
0:11
might just pop into that yeah and then we'll jump a taxi to take us to the Antalya museum
0:19
Yeah, which apparently is... Spot on. Incredible. Yes. So that's our mission for today
0:40
I'm Barry, I'm Aannsha, this is the continuing journey of
0:44
Sailing A B Sea.
0:45
Good way of getting around town if you're in Antalya is to hop on the trams
0:51
Glad we didn't meet one of them head on yesterday. Founder of the Republic of Turkey and a great
0:56
leader of the Turkish nation, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk stayed in this house during his first visit to
1:01
Antalya on the 6th of March 1930. This is a museum dedicated to Ataturk. Admission is free
1:51
Pretty much like the Queen of England has her head on most of the coins and notes in use and
1:57
Ataturk's portrait is on pretty much every piece of money that's ever
2:02
been produced and postage stamps too
2:14
Okay here we are at the Antalya Museum. We've got our good old museum cards so we're going in
2:40
Been there, been there
2:44
Been there, been there, been there, Kaş is there
2:51
Kekova
2:55
Myra. Been there too. Yeah
2:59
Olympos, we've been to.
3:02
Yep been to Olympos. That's on the list coz that's really close to where we are. Yeah cool, let's go in and have a look see
3:14
the Hall of Natural History and Prehistory
3:19
Woah. Right-hand rule I think. Okay yeah. Wow!
3:44
When we see the amazing carvings into the faces of the tombs and everything else, these
3:51
are the tools they had at their disposal. This is what they did it with it's just amazing
4:08
The size of the little tiles. They're smaller than ... they're about half a centimetre wide. Yeah it's amazing
4:16
Amazes me how they they figured out where all the bits go. Yeah, so you would have had
4:21
to go, Okay I want 150,000 tiles in mustard colour and then 150,000 tiles in light mustard
4:40
Wow
4:45
We've seen quite a lot of sarcophagus at the various sites that we've visited
4:49
but the collection they've got here in this museum is absolutely stunning, the artwork is amazing
4:59
I mean for scale there's my hand. This is the sarcophagus of Hercules
5:12
The detail that's gone into that is absolutely
5:15
amazing.
5:23
I mean just the fact that this is is all the way around um
5:29
oh they've left the backside uh as just flat stone. I guess they couldn't get in
5:33
there with the tool and the hammer and chisel. They're just amazing
5:43
But wait there's more
5:58
Gotta say that was absolutely brilliant. I didn't see, I didn't notice what the cost
6:04
getting in was. No. But whatever the price is it's worth paying. Yeah we'll put it on screen
6:09
If we find out yeah. Yeah, so... Definitely worth coming to the museum if you're in Antalya. Yes
6:17
and you like old things. Yes time to find a taxi. Yeah. And get back to the hotel
6:30
Wow look at the size of those things. Oh wow. How would they lift them onto the ship for transporting?
6:36
You know considering the size of it and the weight of the material inside
6:41
Yeah. Very carefully I should think. Yeah
7:02
Time for another wonderful dinner in the uh hotel
7:05
restaurant. Yep burger. Different burger today. Yeah, I might try something different on the menu
7:10
Yeah. Anyway come down with us and check it out it's a lovely place, the fire outside beautiful
7:55
The service is super fast here. I mean literally ordered the wine, ordered the burger and
8:02
by the time they'd opened the bottle of wine there was a ding from the kitchen
8:05
order up and out comes the burger, so they're really on the game
8:11
Mmm, yummo. Yep. Yum!
8:18
Well we've left the lovely hotel, the Route Hotel in the Old Town and we are making our way to Decathlon
8:26
It's been really throwing it down weather-wise, lots and lots of rain and depending on what the
8:31
weather's doing when we come out of Decathlon we may or may not go to Aspendos which is where
8:38
there is a almost intact amphitheatre. So let's see how we go. Yeah. Turn right and keep left. We
8:48
have arrived at Decathlon after a very after a very stressful and arduous navigation process
8:57
Take the slip road. What slip road? Do a U-ey. Get back on the big road, now take the slip road. We
9:05
did find the slip road. Turn right, turn right, turn right, turn right. You taking us around in circles?
9:12
Anyway we're here. Yeah we're here now
9:18
And this was our haul, two pairs of deck shoes and two pairs of trainers, great value for money
9:34
And that is what the back end of an amphitheatre looks like when it's
9:39
in pristine condition. As you can see it's absolutely pouring with rain and
9:47
we've got a very long drive back to Finike so if we go out now we're going to get soaked
9:53
So we might have to come back to Antalya and Aspendos. Yeah. And do a proper tour. Yeah
10:01
But for now this is something I've never seen. If you go inside of this building the semi-circular
10:10
seating area is opposite this flat wall so if that gives you some idea of what you're looking at
10:23
So this rain is forecast for about two weeks
10:28
So it's kind of not good timing coming here but you know at least
10:32
we got away and we did something different, we brought you somewhere
10:36
to a lovely hotel, saw a bit of Old Town Antalya and now it's time to go back to the boat
10:42
Yeah
10:54
A bit lumpy out there eh? Yeah
11:00
Hopefully it's not uh lumping into the marina. Yeah. Nearly home. So have you enjoyed the uh
11:11
weekend? Yeah it's been like a weekend. It's like a weekend yeah in the middle of the week. Yeah it was great
11:18
It's good to just get away sometimes. I think so. Yeah
11:22
I mean we've wanted to see the museum at Antalya for a while
11:26
And er couldn't have picked a better hotel
11:31
I'm sure we've said that 150 times at you already but it was one of the outstanding features of
11:38
the weekend wasn't it? Yeah. Yeah so be nice to get back to the boat see how she's doing. Wooh!
11:48
It is blowing straight in
11:51
in this direction isn't it? Yeah it's coming out, well we're heading west, so it'll be coming. South coming out
11:58
the south yeah.
12:02
Orange growing area
12:26
The water looks alright in there doesn't it?
12:36
Hi. A B Sea on pontoon B
13:34
At least it's not raining while we put the bags back onto the boat that's good
13:47
