This week we have a great time exploring two amazing areas on the Southern Turkish Coast. We leave Fethiye and sail down the coast enjoying a consistent 15 knots of wind. We anchor outside the Kas Marina (Setur) in 15m of mud which is great holding. The water is a beautiful blue and our first impressions are positive with colorful flowers lining the water's edge.
Kas is a funky town that has a lot of life. There are numerous cafe's, bars and boutiques so we settle in by sampling a local nutella crepe. Like all places we visit, we spend the afternoon exploring the town. Kas is known for it's diving so we snorkel the bay and enjoy the turquoise water.
With friends and family arriving in Gocek within a week we head to Kekova. It's a favourite with liveaboards and we can see why with it's large protected anchorages and relaxed vibe. We anchor behind the Simena castle which we explore and is an easy 5 minute dingy to the town. The Simena castle is well preserved and has amazing views of Kekova Island and the large bay. We also decide to try the local ice-cream and buy a beer from the restaurant that let us leave our dingy there.
Across from the Simena castle is the sunken city of Kekova. It's only accessible via canoe or boat so we take Kawai across the bay early and float past the ruins. I take the dingy for a closer look at the ruins of Dolchste an ancient Lycian settlement which was partly overtaken by the sea due to an earthquake in the 2nd century.
Hope you enjoy this weeks video

We don't know exactly where the winds will take us at this stage but over the last couple years we have sailed to Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia.
Jase loves making travel videos and we decided to upload to youtube to share our adventure. We really hope you enjoy and feel free to drop us a comment any time to chat or subscribe to follow along :)

as the sun set on karakoram bay we
0:01
considered what the next day would bring
0:03
the thing about sailing and traveling is
0:05
that you are constantly leaving leaving
0:07
places leaving people what makes this
0:10
bearable is the anticipation and
0:11
excitement of a new journey and a new
0:13
destination
0:20
it's going to be very hard to leave this
0:27
so where are we going today skip we're
0:29
off to cash
0:31
some anchorage you need cash
0:34
or just a little bit beyond cash
0:36
depending on the conditions
0:38
yep hopefully some good sailing yeah
0:42
look at this water
0:44
[Applause]
0:52
our plan was to leave early and catch
0:53
the consistent northerlies down the
0:55
coast before exploring cash in kokova
0:57
both these areas are popular with liver
0:59
boards and it would be our last
1:00
opportunity to visit before collecting
1:02
guests and go check
1:05
favorite time of the day
1:07
turning the engine off yeah sure is
1:10
such a good feeling i love it
1:14
the only little sound you might be
1:15
hearing in the background is the water
1:17
maker running which is perfect
1:20
yep but otherwise we're just having a
1:23
slow downwind sail
1:28
[Music]
2:13
do
2:16
[Music]
2:35
we ain't get outside saturn marina in
2:37
cash the anchorage is large and
2:39
protected and is an easy walk to town
2:46
[Music]
3:02
cash we made it it's a really nice
3:04
feeling to get the anchor down and chill
3:06
it was about 40 nautical miles uh it was
3:09
a really good sailing day we
3:12
probably had tomorrow for about first
3:14
hour but then sailed after that
3:16
so all in all it's uh yeah really good
3:19
it's really pretty here
3:21
it's way prettier than i was expecting
3:24
actually
3:25
not a bad view for the run this
3:27
afternoon i got beautiful ocean on one
3:30
side
3:32
and pretty flowers on the other side
3:38
so nice
3:40
anyway best get back to it
4:09
oh here she is
4:12
hi
4:14
how's your run
4:15
it was sensational
4:18
nice one it's really good
4:21
it was really good
4:24
running along a really good path
4:26
alongside the water
4:28
it was now time to explore the charming
4:30
town of cash a short five minute walk
4:32
from the anchorage the seaside town is
4:35
centered around the main port and is
4:36
known for its ancient ruins bar and
4:38
restaurant scene and is turkey's premier
4:40
scuba diving area
4:42
the town has a relaxed vibe with
4:44
traditional fishing boats filling the
4:45
port and cute houses intertwined with
4:47
bougainvillea
4:49
checking out a little town of cash and
4:51
came up here
4:53
and find it quite interesting that uh
4:56
castalarizo island over there is greece
5:00
it's like so close i didn't even know it
5:02
was there
5:04
didn't know there were greek islands
5:06
down this far as you walk the cobbled
5:07
lanes you feel enticed to stay longer
5:10
so many inviting cafes and bars funky
5:12
boutiques and well there's something for
5:15
everyone
5:18
that looks like water
5:20
yeah well it's about ten
5:23
i just happened to thirty sitting there
5:24
i thought it would be a good shot
5:27
a good shot at the shod bar
5:29
pretty cool like to bring you back here
5:31
later
5:32
get a shot and look what's next door
5:35
oh the hot dog stand yep you're in have
5:37
a nunchuck
5:39
get a carrot dog if you want cool
5:42
that sounds good to me
5:46
[Laughter]
5:49
well i thought i just asked what's your
5:50
first impressions of cash
5:53
um
5:53
well he's very relaxed i feel very
5:56
relaxed here
5:57
it's really cute it feels a little bit
6:00
more european than any other places
6:03
[Music]
6:12
all right well
6:13
first crepe we've had since we've been
6:15
back
6:19
let's get into it
6:20
well for anyone coming to cash um we
6:23
weren't really sure where to put the
6:24
dinghy so on the far side is the i think
6:28
sitter marina
6:29
so i pulled up last night on that side
6:31
for the security around so
6:33
um you can go to shore and there's a big
6:36
ross in there but there's also one in
6:38
town so it's pulled up in the little
6:39
fisherman
6:42
and easy access
6:44
probably a five minute walk to town
6:52
[Applause]
6:53
although cash was one of our favorite
6:55
places in turkey we had read reviews of
6:57
break-ins in the anchorage this type of
6:59
thing can happen anywhere but on our
7:01
final night a neighbour went onshore had
7:03
their hatches broken which made us feel
7:05
a little uneasy about the place
7:07
unfortunately
7:08
not all areas along the turkish coast
7:11
have pump out stations but cash does
7:13
it's something you need to plan and
7:14
complete every 15 days or you may face a
7:17
large phone is this a fun job jace
7:28
i think you were born for this
7:32
you enjoying this aren't you yep
7:36
see you later cashtown
7:42
[Music]
7:54
is
7:58
[Music]
8:03
i'll call you when i get there
8:14
is
8:15
[Music]
8:25
[Music]
8:39
beautiful evening it's what six
8:41
thirty two thirty yeah six thirty p.m
8:44
it's still warm as
8:46
i think that's the best
8:49
it's summer time in europe it's just fun
8:51
easy to stay out i made the most of your
8:54
day
8:56
until
8:57
like 8 30 at night
8:59
and then you're like oh geez where'd the
9:01
day go better get dinner
9:18
isn't particularly touristy however many
9:20
people do explore the sunken city by a
9:22
canoe or gullet and climb the samina
9:24
castle which has impressive views over
9:26
kakova island
9:29
off to explore
9:39
deciding where to pull up huh
10:00
the semena castle sits above kaila koi a
10:02
small village only accessible by boat or
10:04
foot it was once an important watchtower
10:06
in the battle against pirates in the
10:08
region and was built by the knights of
10:10
saint john it has incredible views of
10:12
kokova island and gokoye bay
10:17
ancient licean rock tombs scatter the
10:19
landscape below the castle and are
10:21
generally well preserved almost every
10:23
tomb has been looted via holes in the
10:25
walls of the tomb and their occupants
10:27
precious gifts stolen
10:29
for those who want to explore both the
10:31
castle and the sunken city it is
10:33
possible to anchor off the castle in
10:35
calm conditions and tie off however
10:37
there is some obstacles to be aware of
10:39
we decided to anchor behind the castle
10:41
and dinghy to shore make sure you try
10:43
the homemade ice cream a specialty of
10:46
the locals got yourself a scoop of
10:48
homemade ice cream
10:50
how would you rate it
10:52
yeah it's good really good
10:54
it's uh
10:55
almonds and honey something
10:58
tastes good
11:00
yeah really good
11:01
smooth smooth definitely smooth
11:05
all right let's cruise through
11:07
you filming me you're tiny
11:09
oh the great thing about the gopro is
11:11
you both make the
11:12
cut and the great thing about tiny you
11:15
couldn't fit in any photo
11:17
uh yeah little good little spot we've
11:20
all pulled her up to
11:22
and decided that it would be rude not to
11:24
have a beer
11:26
where's jake
11:28
[Laughter]
11:30
oh there he is you weren't meant to come
11:32
[Laughter]
11:37
like an emu if you stick your head in
11:39
the sand you're not actually exercising
11:42
sounds really bright above me
11:45
morning workout
11:46
it's going good yeah i'm good it's
11:48
always
11:50
nice to get into a bit of a routine
11:52
coffee
11:53
gym
11:55
swim swim and relax
11:57
explore
11:59
so
11:59
that's the plan today i think we might
12:01
head
12:02
in amongst those rocks over there looks
12:04
like the water's a little bit bluer
12:07
so we'll um we'll cruise over there
12:10
we are the only one here the big blows
12:12
coming today and uh
12:16
all the boats are up in that little spot
12:18
except for us
12:20
but um i think it's going to be
12:21
protected enough here and i'd rather not
12:23
be around other boats
12:25
there'll be chain everywhere anchors
12:27
everywhere
12:29
just us here
12:30
in a couple of fishing boats
12:32
so yeah last good shake that thing
12:42
well we've just made the executive
12:44
decision to move close up to the castle
12:47
uh the wind was channeling through a gap
12:49
that we were near up that end of the
12:52
base so we just moved a little bit
12:53
further down
12:55
and
12:56
reset the anchor we've got about 20
12:58
knots blowing currently it's predicted
13:00
outside to get to 38 knots so
13:03
we're hoping uh it doesn't reach in here
13:06
wendy shows us as being like right on
13:08
the cutoff point so
13:10
we'll see what happens at 8 minutes deep
13:12
we've got 40 meters of chain out and
13:16
um we trust our anchor and it's muddy
13:19
sandy bottom so
13:20
we'll be all right well we're pretty
13:22
lucky this is current now we are just in
13:25
here
13:26
um
13:28
it's dead calm i wouldn't even say it's
13:30
registering on the wind meter
13:32
um 38 knots just out there so yeah this
13:35
anchorage is fantastic um the last two
13:38
days we haven't really had
13:41
much wind at all no the highest we've
13:43
got to is about 20 knots
13:46
and this is current
13:48
38 north gusts out there to view
13:51
kukova's sunken city we decided to take
13:53
kauai and float just off the area before
13:56
the tourist boats arrived i decided to
13:58
get a closer look and took tiny for a
14:00
bomb yes
14:06
um
14:07
castle in behind you
14:10
yeah that's a nice view isn't it
14:23
these are the underwater ruins of dolce
14:25
an ancient lithian settlement which was
14:27
partly overtaken by the sea due to an
14:29
earthquake in the second century the
14:31
city was rebuilt however conflicts
14:33
between the arabs and byzantines in the
14:35
7th century a.d left the area
14:37
unprotected and unsafe so it was
14:40
abandoned this area is now protected so
14:42
it's illegal to dive the runs
14:58
jake's coming back from his little
14:59
adventure
15:03
how was your little adventure yeah it
15:05
wasn't too bad
15:06
i saw a little
15:08
sleepy turtle just over there then oh no
15:10
i'm chilling
15:12
it's pretty slow he's gone up pretty
15:14
close to him until he saw me
15:17
um but yeah that wasn't too bad yeah i
15:19
enjoyed it it's
15:21
no it's very similar to the other side
15:23
but it's probably a little bit more
15:25
evident here it's a little water yeah
15:27
it's just a little bit nicer yeah so
15:29
yeah no it was i'm glad i did it
15:33
next time we head north and return to go
15:35
check where we pick up friends and
15:37
family from new zealand we visit many
15:39
unique coves and some familiar favorites
15:41
as we spend a week teaching some sailing
15:43
skills and sightseeing this beautiful
15:45
area before jay celebrates his birthday
15:48
with turkish
15:50
[Music]
15:52
friends thanks for watching you know the
15:55
