Sailing LAID Back Lagoon LIFE in the Marshall Islands LAID Back Lagoon LIFE- Ailuk atoll, Marshall Islands Ailuk atoll, Marshall Islands This week, we start our lagoon life at Ailuk atoll! We were given permission to travel to Ailuk Atoll to deliver essential food suppliers on behalf of Mayor Typhoon, so along with Mark and Angie, the crew from our buddy boat 'Uno Mas' , we waste no time in dropping off lots of flour, rice, sugar, coffee and spices, before sharing a drinking coconut and morning tea with locals ,Pumpkin and Emily We spend time diving within the lagoon where we sadly discover the much of the coral has been badly damaged and bleached, but we do see a couple of schools of fish and have a really relaxed swim-by from an eagle ray, We also enjoy a beach picnic and sundowners with the crews from 'Forever' and 'Offshore Haven'. We are Jo and Rob and we are here to share our sailing adventures with you. In 2016, inspired by the likes of ‘Delos’, ‘Sailing La Vagabonde’ and ‘Gone with The Wynns’, we sold up everything we owned and bought our 40ft, Fountaine Pajot ‘Lipari 41 Evo’ sailing catamaran ‘Double Trouble’. We had no sailing experience whatsoever, so the past few years have been a huge learning curve. We thought it might be fun to document our travels for anyone thinking of following a similar lifestyle. So far we have visited 7 different countries and sailed over 13,000 nautical miles. We have had many unique experiences that would not have been possible in our prior life and we don’t regret a second. We're both super keen on protecting our precious environment, so amongst other things, we both follow a plant based diet. You wont find any fishing footage on this channel! it's so nice to um to be in a place
where we wake up and the sun is shining
and there's no storm clouds on the
horizon
and uh yeah it's just lovely
i've just put the kiss of death on today
any minute now
school's gonna come in yeah

after weeks of planning in measure with
the internal affairs department and mr
typhoon the mayor
it was wonderful to travel two days and
250 miles north to i look lagoon
this coral atoll is made up of 57
islands on its eastern side
and has a land area of five and a half
kilometers it encloses a lagoon of over
178
square kilometers
[Music]
before we had left measure we had
restocked dt with more than two months
of provisions
and also loaded supplies for the
villagers and some of the yachts who
were already there
after a good night's sleep the first
thing we did was head ashore with mark
and angie from uno mas
and met with pumpkin and emily to drop
off the rice flour and sugar that they
had ordered
[Music]
we spent some time talking with them and
sharing a coconut and some bandanas cake
before heading across town to the
mayor's house to pay our respects and
visitors fee
hold on and dusted fees paid boys are
going to come over and collect the boxes
from the boat
so it's coming back in in the dingy
what's a result hey a whole load of
drinking coconuts
yeah i love it
[Applause]
it's a gray and rainy monday
and we're doing boat jobs is there
anything more exciting rob after a
passage that it raining
himself after any big sale we spend time
resetting dt for life on the hook
any open water trip means a lot of salt
water and spray that needs to be rinsed
off
we'd also been really busy trying to
leave measure so a good
boat wash to clean off the soot and dust
was long overdue
fortunately their regular showers in
this part of the world make a fresh
water wash down easier
[Music]
after only a year and a half the soft
anti-fowl we've been recommended in new
zealand was pretty much
all gone the paint is designed so it
peels off a layer and self-cleans while
we sail along
we discovered a couple of hours into the
crossing that this doesn't happen
anymore
and after three months in measure the
sea life built up on the hull
meant we lost about a knot and a half of
boat speed on the passage
so it was time to start scraping
[Music]
to finish off the boat jobs we chopped
off the diesel tanks and then used
lots of freshly caught water to do all
our laundry
good morning it is a beautiful morning
but it is a tad rolly in here today the
winter's come round it's come around
more to the north
and this makes this anchorage just a
little bit on the rolly side
so um today is the day we are going to
[Music]
move
i'll just move down creatures it's a
little bit rolly up here but not as bad
as the bottom and you're going to go and
see if you can see the anchor yeah we're
in 20 meters
we'll see we'll see okay
further up we were down there and we've
just moved up here
and uh una mass offshore haven and
pinocchio are up here
all nicely spread out and we are
anchored off this
stunning there's just a whole row of
islets that run up this east side and
we're anchored off
one of those
so sun down is on the deck and daisy's
just had a little fly around
first flight in this lagoon so
did well she came back which is always a
bonus
and it's friday night after a fairly
quiet week
we're now having a nice sunday it's good
so rob's in bobbity birch you of the
tashmo
man what are you doing yes i am going to
deep fry some breadfruit
chips because they're they're really
gorgeous
what's the occasion oh we're going to
have a
mo meeting on offshore haven
the three most to tears in other words
we're going for sundowners on offshore
haven
yes and the three men that will be there
are sporting these ridiculous mustaches
fabulous mustaches anyway rob's making
breakfast chips and i've made some
garlic mayonnaise to go with them so
yeah and there we have the finished
product
oh don't forget the mayonnaise it's in
the fridge garlic mayonnaise we're
talking about with these
yum yum and then we will be off quite
well what's the queen song
i think it's more ymca oh
[Applause]
[Music]
the mower is gone we're going for a dive
and
i don't want my master flood so it's all
coming off
that's much better the clean shaven
after shot yes
[Music]
so
[Music]
so
[Music]
morning monday morning and we're just
back from a little jaunt into the
village
when caught caught up with emily and
pumpkin
i took alex in with us slow tripping and
date but it was uh it was nice
yeah it was good we're just neglected to
take the camera with us little because
we're amateurs yes
but next time we'll do it we've got a
bit of a haul didn't we
got some lovely bananas a couple of more
bread fruits
because they're in season and lots of
the island limes that they have
so yeah well it's a pouring with rain
this afternoon we got back from the
village just in time
and we are doing what you always do when
it pauses rain and we are catching
water we've got some laundry to do and
if we don't have to use our water maker
then we don't use the water maker
might as well use the free stuff rob's
at the front of the boat setting up a
new system that he has just made
and yeah we are catching water out the
back here let me show you
so he's just filled that big container
with buckets from the front
so we have the water capture set up and
we're gonna do the laundry in that
and uh we've got water capture going on
this side as well
free stuff
just explaining we were going for dinner
on the beach with the cruise of forever
and offshore haven
yes it's going to be a fabulous evening
hurrah are you ready to go that's great
good we have beer we have chili we have
rice
we're not professional enough to cook
our dinner on the fire
so we're taking our dinner let's get in
dave and uh
get out of here
right are we ready for the off i shall
get in
and i hope it doesn't rain and here we
are on the beach
oh it's on the beach with forever we
haven't been on the beach with forever
since
fiji was the last time we had a beach
fire this is michelle's homemade
look at that it's a steel fishing float
and apparently it makes the perfect rice
michelle's being professional and
cooking on the beach
we've brought us two opposite halves
it's literally just weaving yeah that's
what mourinho's making
plates he's a clever lady
