Sailing MERCY MISSION in Marshall Islands! While in the Marshall Islands. Travel to the outer islands has been banned due to Covid 19 restrictions, even though the Marshall Islands has no cases of the virus. However, a broken down ferry means an opportunity to help out the outer atolls and gives us chance to sail further afield . We are Jo and Rob and we are here to share our sailing adventures with you. In 2016, inspired by the likes of ‘Delos’, ‘Sailing La Vagabonde’ and ‘Gone with The Wynns’, we sold up everything we owned and bought our 40ft, Fountaine Pajot ‘Lipari 41 Evo’ sailing catamaran ‘Double Trouble’. We had no sailing experience whatsoever, so the past few years have been a huge learning curve. We thought it might be fun to document our travels for anyone thinking of following a similar lifestyle. So far we have visited 7 different countries and sailed over 13,000 nautical miles. We have had many unique experiences that would not have been possible in our prior life and we don’t regret a second. We're both super keen on protecting our precious environment, so amongst other things, we both follow a plant based diet. You wont find any fishing footage on this channel! well after a month
in downtown measure it is now time to
head out and we are now at animate
what a minute in a minute one of those
we are basically six miles outside of
measure a lovely little coconut
palm-fronded island and we're hoping to
hang out here for a few days and just
recharge our batteries bit of a long
weekend away
[Music]

anamonic is a small island within the
lagoon less than an hour sail from
downtown majoro
and it's very popular as a quick getaway
white sand palm trees crystal clear
water and some
nice diving spots it's the perfect place
to escape the hustle and bustle of town
for a few days
[Music]
the weather in majaro is affected by the
inter-tropical convergence zone which
brews up rain schools
it can be sunny one minute and pouring
with rain the next
however the squalls usually blow through
quite quickly and then normal service
can be resumed
after a short and welcome break we
headed back into majero
we'd heard that the mayor of ilook one
of the outer was in need of
some help
we were very keen to meet with him and
find out more
how's your tuesday going very good
thanks we are still
stuck in the marshall islands in the
fact that we're in majuro lagoon
and trying to work out uh how to get
out of ireland uh potentially with this
covid
thing that's going on we've been told as
visiting yachts we're not allowed to go
to any of the outer
but the virus isn't actually in the
marshall islands yet
we are still thankfully covered free
yeah the the um
the directive not to go out of ireland
is
has been driven by the mayors and they
have
um each of the atolls they they look
after and that was something that they
decided in one of their conferences
about six weeks ago yesterday you spoke
to the mayor of i look
which is an about 200 miles from
here and uh we went for a cup of coffee
in a chat with him today
and mr typhoon mr typhoon what a
fabulous name that is very nice chap
but um it turns out that there's a
problem with one of the ferries
uh that normally does deliveries out to
the outer islands
and looks like because of this ferry a
lot being able to deliver
some supplies we will be able to do that
on their behalf
and therefore travel to the atoll so
we've got a few
bits of paperwork that we need to
organize we're going to
pop back in this afternoon um to sign
those and if that all goes well
then we need to stock the boat up and
look for a weather window
and hopefully head out to ireland which
would be lovely because as nice as
measurable lagoon is it will be nice to
see some of the other
we're quietly hopeful but uh
with most of the paperwork in the
marshall islands until things
are finalized then we'll uh we'll
celebrate that i think but for now
we'll see how this meeting goes this
afternoon
[Music]
so here we are in the office of internal
affairs
mark and andrew you've got something on
the top left
yeah i'm just trying to and andrew's
friend
makes me look more serious and i have my
mustache
with a meeting with the man if i look
trying to get a permanent look
to go to eye look
mark knows the names i'm so versed with
all of this anyway fingers crossed chaps
permission to go so after a very
successful meeting with mayor typhoon we
met up with yoland the head of internal
affairs
he signed the necessary paperwork to
give the three yachts permission to
deliver supplies to ilook at all
while we were in the office mayor
sampson from our at all arrived
he also seemed very keen for us to visit
so yoland agreed to sign permissions for
us all to visit our at all too
a bonus that we weren't expecting but in
your case you were helping the mayor
so you guys are going there to deliver
something
materials that they need so
he's aware of it and he's aware of this
so
we can weave it okay
who can and he's just given us our
permits to go to ireland
and to our we say thank you very very
much indeed yolanda
thank you george a pleasure yeah and uh
you'll be in that you'll be in the next
video
gentlemen have we had a result that is
very successful very good
we now have permits to go to you're
totally peppered
i look and hour and we are very happy
nice work wow that was a good result
great result permit for eye look and a
permit for hour thank you
thank you mr tofu cheers and mr samson
yes oh was a bonus at all thrown in at
the end eh
because it may happen to be in the
office two for one and when
going out tonight to quietly celebrate
at the time
having uh had a successful day yesterday
and being granted our permission to go
to ilook and our
um we are having a bit of a sort out
this morning which generally makes means
making a mess first of all there's the
laundry well that's half of the laundry
because what we're also going to do is
take all these cushions off because
they're
filthy and get them all washed and then
you've been busy doing this which is our
spreadsheet rob likes a spreadsheet and
sorting out some stuff from the builders
that got weeviled yesterday
yeah we've got weevil so i've given the
builds a bit of a wipe but now i've
sorted this out for
weevil protection so every anything in a
bag is going in a sealed box
to stop them getting in and then open
boxes
these are all cans and more robust
containers of themselves so it should
work quite well
and then we are going to have a look at
our list which is here and decipher what
we need to go and buy at the shops
yeah i think we've got uh we've got a
pretty good base stop
we're planning that once we're out there
that we will be away for
an extended period this time yeah
probably about six six or seven weeks if
we can manage it
easily so we want to be fully stocked so
we've got a busy week ahead
on double trouble i'm just
filling up this 4kg bottle emptying this
9kg
so that we can get uh get some
new gas today and fill up
these small ones are the ones that fit
under in our gas locker
and the 9kg ones are too big but we have
this handy transfer device
that we've got from australia when the
small ones run out we cross-feed it just
means we can store more gas on board
without having heaps and heaps of these
tiny little bottles
[Music]
we are going to go and get our gas fill
[Music]
today
[Music]
and then it was time to start loading
the goods for delivery to eye look
offshore haven took the first load and
we taught mark and orange some proper
english expressions
it's good how does it feel that you're
like no no no i'm happy as larry this is
nothing
we'll have you talking new zealand by
the end of the trip
[Music]
offshore haven left in the early hours
of this morning and they're having a
lovely sale apparently
they're having a great time yeah and
we're uh we're just waiting on a couple
of things to come in
and possibly get another order from
the mayor's son yeah they're asking us
to take some stuff up which is the
reason that we're going up there but
yeah we should have gone with offshore
haven because it sounds like they're
having a lovely sale
while we slop around here but we weren't
ready so
no and uh it looks like there'll be a
similar wind shift later in the weeks
we'll just play these schools are just
funny
somewhat of a contrast to yesterday
we're having no wind day
the first one we've had since we've been
here isn't it i think so
so it means we can fix our headset do
you want to tell us what's going on
there mr b
uh yeah this um this happened on our
last crossing up to
to rower and this came off the
sail the foot of the sail or the clue
sorry
and uh it it's basically used to pull
this line tight so as you can see it was
nibbling away down here
so i've just got some dyneema
and uh done some stitches around it
so fortunately i have some of this very
thin dyneema so this is
super strong the brake strain on this is
probably
just under a ton which is ridiculous but
uh it means we can use it as sewing
thread just it's just threading the
needle is the hardest bit
so i've just put double loops on all of
these and now i'm going to tie a knot in
this
and we'll be done and this as rob was
explaining tightens the foot of our sail
jobs are good very good
and now i'm just going to burn these and
melt it all down into a
bit more of a stopper knot so it doesn't
slip and uh
yeah we're done excellent at all before
breakfast
well the sun's just setting rob's out
taking some video
and the boat is upside down we are
prepping to go to i look tomorrow
hopefully we've got the last of the
shopping done i think we're sitting a
lot lower in the water than we should be
let me show you the sunset because it's
lovely
it's been a busy day hasn't it there's a
few days
we've got all the fuel today picking
some stuff up tomorrow and then
that should be it will be away tomorrow
evening
looking forward to getting out here yeah
yeah very much so
all right the next load was being taken
by uno mas
so back to the dock we went
this time it was mostly rice and flour
[Music]
that's a lot of rocks
can you imagine uh 50 bags of those
no that's what malola lab needed
[Music]
good job team gonna have some very happy
villagers when we get there i think
it's three o'clock and we were off to
meet the mayor's son on the dock
got a last pickup of um
supplies for them and then come back few
last things to do get the
outboard back on and everything's stowed
away and then we'll be off cool
let's go and get whatever it is we need
to get is mr typhoon's son
yes yes but we're very pleased to be
taking this stuff up to i look for you
is there another box is there more
on the bottom and that's the flower
that's good is that everything
and that is the last of our stuff to
take to eye look
jobs are good
so after some glorious weather the last
couple of days
how're we going there chad it's the
laura sod the rain has rolled in
and the squalls have rolled in and we're
just making a decision whether to uh
whether we go out this evening whether
we give it another couple of hours and
see what happens or whether we make the
call and go out
tomorrow it's not wild and wooly or
anything but there's just a wall of
grey behind us we're just going to suck
it and see for another hour
and make the decision as to
what we're going to do but it's um
it's not looking very clement is it no
so we've just looked at the grips again
we have and mark has just downloaded the
uh mark marino mass has just downloaded
the satellite and apparently there's
some pretty nasty stuff just north of
here and it's a rule if we're not happy
we don't go out
like i say if you're out in it and it
hits you then you deal with it
you don't choose to go out in it if you
don't have to and we don't have to the
wind is absolutely fine for us to leave
it this time tomorrow
so that's what we're doing we're making
a call um we would rather be safe out
there would rather have a decent run up
there obviously
um so yeah that's the call we're gonna
make and we are gonna head off uh
probably at about four or five o'clock
tomorrow
after yesterday evening schools we have
a magnificent
sunrise welcoming us to the day and it
bodes well
for a departure later on today up to
ilock so we're very much looking forward
to that
and for now we're just gonna have a cup
of tea and enjoy the sunrise
that's something nice it's raining
again it was gonna be a nice morning
at five this morning it was a glorious
sunrise it's actually
dark isn't it yeah
there's a big uh system just to the
south of us so yeah the uh
intertropical convergence zone is
sitting just south of us which is
causing
[Applause]
[Applause]
are we going yeah good we're just
checking the weather uh we tried to get
out of here last night but the
weather was appalling so we pulled the
plug and we're looking at the weather
for getting out this evening and it's
looking okay
uh this is the basically predict wind
see we're here
this big purple band that you see across
here is what's known as the
intertropical convergence zone
and unfortunately it's sitting right
over uh marjora at the moment
but if i this is now so this the
basically the color the the darker the
color indicates the heavier rain pink is
the nasty crap
and this is what we're getting at the
moment and it's yeah it's kind of not as
heavy as it was but if i take you
forward to this evening
this is us here we're moving into the
light blue area
and we're hoping to get out in that band
this evening once obviously you can see
once we're north of here that this all
will basically get out of the zone it
clears up and it's going to be hopefully
plain sailing from there
good stuff and then from a wind
perspective it looks like it's going to
be a fairly good angle and it's going to
be about
15 to 20 knots maybe this is our wind
angle here these are the gusts so it
always looks a bit higher on the gusts
um so we've got maybe gusts of about 18
knots
and it's coming from an east northeast
three direction which is great we're
sort of heading on this angle so we
should have it
it's probably going to be slightly
forward of the beam but hopefully it
won't be too much on the nose
and uh the gusts are not going to be
going to be too hefty out there we're
heading
up here off the map somewhere but yeah
we're hoping for a good run
and it's going to take us about 40 hours
we think so yeah
good well we have just had the mother of
all squalls go
through for the last hour or so it has
been
persisting down fairly heavily we are
seeing some
cloudless sky um
upwind of us which is quite a nice sign
um so we think
we're gonna up anchor and get the flock
out of here
well we're finally leaving it's not the
best weather we've ever left it
i think we might have a scaly night
however there's a little bit of blue sky
over there
yeah it looks quite nice actually
remember that for later
we finally made our way out of majero
past the huge factory fishing boats and
out towards the pass
but what would prove to be another
squarely passage
