Sailing and exploring War RELICS of TAROA The World War 2 WRECKS and RELICS of TAROA After a long check in, we were more than ready to get off DT and start exploring Taroa. The island had played a big role during the Second World War. The Japanese built two runways and stationed over 3000 troops on the islands. There are a lot of reminders of this occupation, with spent shells, live ammunition and rusted guns littering the shore line. Inland there are wrecked airplanes and remains of bunkers and buildings. We are Jo and Rob and we are here to share our sailing adventures with you. In 2016, inspired by the likes of ‘Delos’, ‘Sailing La Vagabonde’ and ‘Gone with The Wynns’, we sold up everything we owned and bought our 40ft, Fountaine Pajot ‘Lipari 41 Evo’ sailing catamaran ‘Double Trouble’. We had no sailing experience whatsoever, so the past few years have been a huge learning curve. We thought it might be fun to document our travels for anyone thinking of following a similar lifestyle. So far we have visited 7 different countries and sailed over 13,000 nautical miles. We have had many unique experiences that would not have been possible in our prior life and we don’t regret a second. We're both super keen on protecting our precious environment, so amongst other things, we both follow a plant based diet. You wont find any fishing footage on this channel! yeah apparently we were deemed as
unclean we couldn't come ashore but
we're okay now allegedly

after three days on board trying to sort
out permission to come ashore we finally
made it into the village
we met the new mayor who would arrive
from majoro the previous day and he
welcomed us to the island
[Music]
we were given drinking coconuts and
invited to have a look inside the
classroom of the school
where the students were sitting an end
of term test
[Music]
we left them to their studies and set
off to explore making some new friends
along the way
a beautiful island a lovely friendly
village as well
julie's surrounded by the kids up there
and it's just lovely look at her
[Music]
with our mini tour guides in tow we
began to uncover the wrecks and relics
of world war ii
[Music]
after world war one the marshall islands
were given to the japanese by
the league of nations but it wasn't
until they withdrew from the league in
1935 that malolap was first used by the
japanese military
[Music]
they began to secretly develop strategic
sites around the country
the malolap base was one of the most
developed with hangars
service shops barracks bunkers and guns
of every description
during world war ii the usa finally got
wind of what was going on and launched
two attacks
the second and biggest began in 1943
and lasted two years during which time
the malolap air base and surrounding
facilities were bombed with over 8
million
pounds of bombs and artillery rounds
just walking back through the bush been
trying to find an old airplane
[Music]
we've lost the trail we're going to go
[Music]
back
there's just stuff everywhere the amount
of concrete that they must have brought
in
to build all this stuff is just
phenomenal
[Music]
absolutely
[Music]
a second day of exploring was called for
so here we are back on shore and
what are you up to mr b daisy is coming
out daisy the new drone
we're gonna see how high we can get it
without it being boofed away by the wind
she's very tiny compared to darren isn't
she
this is daisy everybody unfortunately
because the airstrip is still in fairly
regular use by local flights we weren't
allowed to fly daisy here
never mind we were off to find more
wrecks
this time it was the wreck of a crashed
bomber
you think this is the upside down
cockpit and the thing on top here is
probably where they
carried a bomb
just laying around in the field
yeah yeah i reckon that's probably the
tail section
that's gonna be the cockpit
it's hard to tell isn't it
[Music]
bullet holes in there look
in the wings
it's the landing gear
what we assume is a landing gear
attached to the underside of the wing
there
oh hey all this history just sitting
here randomly
in the middle of this
jungle either that is
we came across another small settlement
and one of the kids was immediately sent
up a tree to fetch us coconuts while we
chatted with the residents
so martial these people were living here
at the same time that this was all the
fort and everything okay
that's why you never want to stand under
a coconut tree
i normally would have volunteered to do
this but you know
i haven't got the right shoes on
within minutes the coconuts were shucked
and handed around and we were off on our
way again
how's your coconut
this time to the northern tip of the
island to a beach scattered with
pillboxes and guns
[Music]
so
[Music]
towards the end of the war the u.s
forces secretly evacuated all the
marshallese on malola
and the japanese were left alone by the
time the malolap garrison surrendered on
board the destroyer escort wingfield on
september the 6th
1945 the commander of the atoll
ria admiral tamada had lost 2363 of his
men
over 66 percent of the garrison
[Music]
needless to say the area is littered
with wrecks
although many have been cut up for the
copper brass and aluminium parts by the
locals
live shells are still scattered around
and ammunition can still be picked up on
the beach
[Music]
island is beautiful lush jungle and
coconut trees have reclaimed most of the
island
and the main village is perfectly placed
to overlook the deep blue lagoon
it was lovely to see a thriving
community here
some of the structures left by the
japanese occupation have been made
habitable
but most housing is in the traditional
style with a very welcoming atmosphere
[Music]
a stark difference compared to the more
violent history the island has endured
[Music]
