Sailing Catamaran Maintenance Stuff BREAKS; We FIX It - The Boat Jobs Never End! This week we are enjoying time in Majuro Atoll. After nearly a year of cruising, we take the opportunity to complete a few boat projects. Majuro has good access to hardware shops and the US postal system, so we have better access to spares and supplies. Project one: Reinforcing our escape hatches. There is a manufacturer recall on our Goiot escape hatches. Until we get new lenses sent to us, we are required to strengthen the attachment of the lens to the frame. This requires us to source the parts, use the angle grinder to cut aluminium plates and drill through the perspex lens so we can bolt it all together. Fortunately we complete the work with no issue and still have a waterproof boat at the end of the day! Always a good result when making holes in the boat! Project Two: Re-attaching part of our kitchen bench. A repair that was done to our bench wears out so a stainless steel upstaged ‘falls out’. We much skill and copious amount of silicone sealant the skipper manages to get it all re-installed. Project Three: The backed up toilet. Plumbing on a boat is pretty serious stuff…especially when there is a blockage. There is some debate as to the cause of the blockage, but there is no doubt that the captain did a great job (eventually) clearing the pipes. Project Four: A broken washing machine. With a loud grinding noise and the smell of hot rubber our washing machine signalled that it needed some attention. We spent quite some time diagnosing the problem and attempting to fix the spider that attached to the drum. We called in the welding expertise of a local auto repair shop, but it was no use. The repair was terminal. So we stripped the machine for its parts and after three years of excellent service we are now using buckets to do our laundry! Project Five: Let there be light! There is a lot of strip lighting in our galley, but it had yellowed with age and some of the resistors looked like they were starting to get quite hot. So it was time to replace them. A fairly quick job, but it needed steady hands to solder the new connections and then stick the new lights down. Another successful job done and a much brighter galley! A win-win! Project Six: We were definitely on a roll, so time to finish big and replace the fridge seals. After looking at the replacement seals for a year and writing the job off as ‘ a bit complicated’ it turned out to be a really quick process. Remove the old seal, clean the door groove and apply the new seal. After a few days the seals were not staying in place, so applying a touch of ‘super glue’ at key points did the trick!. Six weeks in Majuro was plenty of time to get boat projects done and re-stock the larder. A nice reset before going out exploring and seeing what else the Marshall Islands had to offer. We are Jo and Rob and we are here to share our sailing adventures with you. In 2016, inspired by the likes of ‘Delos’, ‘Sailing La Vagabonde’ and ‘Gone with The Wynns’, we sold up everything we owned and bought our 40ft, Fountaine Pajot ‘Lipari 41 Evo’ sailing catamaran ‘Double Trouble’. We had no sailing experience whatsoever, so the past few years have been a huge learning curve. We thought it might be fun to document our travels for anyone thinking of following a similar lifestyle. So far we have visited 7 different countries and sailed over 13,000 nautical miles. We have had many unique experiences that would not have been possible in our prior life and we don’t regret a second. We're both super keen on protecting our precious environment, so amongst other things, we both follow a plant based diet. You wont find any fishing footage on this channel! time to leave today
a little bit of a side swell happening
[Music]
and uh we need to get back into town and
do some internet
and bits and pieces so we're going to
have an
hour and a half sail back to maduro
downtown
here we are in mazaron lagoon
beating up wind 24 knots on the nose
just going across to look here we've got
both engines on
and i'm mostly concerned about my
kombucha because i don't want it to
spill
so yeah it's uh it's a ton of breezy out
here

there are a number of advantages for
recruiting yachts to visit metro and the
marshall islands
typically yachts come here instead of
going south to australia and new zealand
to sit out the south pacific cyclone
season
this year the visiting yachts were made
up of a mix of new zealand
us and canadian boats getting around
majuro is easy
there are many private cars registered
as taxis
with every trip costing one us dollar
per person
alternatively there are a few dingy
docks around the lagoon
some are in better repair than others
but this makes for an easy dinghy ride
and shorter walk to the shops
immigration restaurants or the hospital
the yacht club hosts a cruisernet and
also a regular tuesday dinner at
different restaurants around town
occasional sundowners on different boats
is always an enjoyable way to spend an
evening as well
while there are no yacht haul out
facilities access to supplies
laundrettes propane fuel and spare parts
is good
there is good internet access for online
ordering and a regular us
postal service as well as dhl and fedex
offices
three large hardware shops make
completing boat projects much
easier we had a number of maintenance
items we needed to get done
one of the more urgent ones was to
strengthen the lenses in our goyo escape
hatches
which were subject to a manufacturer
recall i love you though you've got your
safety gear and you're bare chested
yeah i've got some uh
aluminium shards in my belly button i
think great
fun to pick out later what are you doing
i'm
making some aluminium uh reinforcements
for our escape hatches which we will
explain more of later
yes welcome to our starboard hull this
is our escape hatch
and i'm just going to go over what the
problem is
there is a aluminium frame and within
that there is a perspex lens that is
silicon
and glued in essentially the issue is
that that silicon over time will fail
especially at the top part of the lens
they've had it come away
and then as soon as the water gets in
behind there there's nothing holding the
lens in and
water will come into the boat we've
fabricated our own repair
which consists of some aluminium
brackets
that we've bent to shape and then we've
glued them to the lens
this is very similar to the phantom
peugeot repair which was a longer piece
of aluminium channel
with a similar profile and then you glue
that
onto the lens like this however
uh phantom per show have indicated that
there have been a number of failures of
this temporary repair their current
recommendation
is that we drill through the
lens put a bolt in there and then that
bolt will then secure
to a piece of aluminium channel and that
aluminium channel will then sit
between the frame and the lens and
essentially sandwich it all together
and we'll put one in each corner
with a couple of bolts and have a very
secure
repair now this repair will be in place
until
phantom peugeot and goyo get around to
manufacturing
their new uh safety lens
and hatch system and then they are going
to send us an entire
new hatch this surround will stay in
place
but the lens will be fully replaced
but in the meantime we cannot leave port
until we bolt these
in place and then send them a picture
and confirm that we have the fix in
place
and then we can leave just doing a
little bit of uh
spring cleaning on the boat and notice a
little bit of a wobble so
um i've got some unplanned
maintenance uh in my future because uh
i fixed this a couple of years ago in
other words he broke it
and uh the repair needs redoing
nice job captain thank you just gonna
do some cleanup top johnny banana
yeah didn't take too long it took longer
to break it than it did to fix it
seems to be some commotion from the uh
the port side dunny there darling
it's a bit backed up is there an issue
yeah yeah it's not working
ah and and who's just used the port side
donnie
that would be me that would be you so
who has to fix the port side donnie yeah
i blame the doll
would you uh like me to get you some
rubber gloves
yeah i think actually um right here we
go yeah
our toilet seat has been uh it's got
these little plastic things on the
bottom of it
that have been disintegrating and
falling into the toilet right
yeah so i think i've just dropped a
blade
is that what we're calling it these days
is it
the new euphemism i've just dropped a
blade
my masticator isn't masticating oh dear
i'm going in i'll do it till i do it
before lunch if i was you
yeah no there we go just fix this
i problem two toilets hey
why are you sweating over our washing
machine robson um
it uh the drum is we think damaged
and it's not spinning straight so we've
got to take it off the wall
so things are progressing well it's a
little sweaty very sweaty
uh so we've taken the bolts off i've
disconnected the hose
and this was glued in so i've had to uh
gonna fix this later who's who's there's
a tournament
there somewhere i thought that was four
candles
it does same thing awesome in theory all
i need to do is just take
uh this off the wall because it's just
being held on by the bolts we've taken
the nuts off
so let's see how that goes eh
just finding somewhere to hold it oh
there we go
there's not much weight to it that'd be
watered down my leg
are you sure is it from the washing
machine
so it looks i feel come and assist you
though that's all right
this is what we wanted to have a look at
le back
so we think this bolt is crooked because
our drum is not
happy is it it's not wearing away the
rubber seal inside the door when it
turns
just outside it's three year warranty
it's actually not
i don't think did it happen for you
i'd be surprised that was humor oh
okay
washing machine yay almost felt
backwards and that would have been fun
it would have made good tully
washing machine is now on the table
outside
and we're troubleshooting
but it's definitely uh the drum is
definitely rubbing against the
seal of the door here i'm gonna get rob
to spin it and show you what's happening
as it goes around you can hear it
[Music]
and that's all the rubber that's falling
out when it does it
oh when you live on a boat you're
everything mechanical
engine mechanic washing machine mechanic
yeah i'm worried about getting the bill
send it to yourself i'm worried about
putting this back together without
having any
bits missing
so we've got a washing machine in bits
and i and some kind of
alien life form growing on the back of
here i don't know what that is
yeah what is that cat i don't know
it's weird hey it's like old soap yeah
here's the drum
it needs a pretty good clean um
everything else on the mechanism kind of
looks okay
more soap it's going to take a while to
get it clean
the stainless strum of the washing
machine is attached to a 3
arm aluminium spider which once we had
cleaned up we saw had cracks on two of
its three arms which was causing the
misalignment
we took the unit to an auto repair shop
and they tried to weld it back together
unfortunately this didn't work as there
was no way to get a spare drum we had no
choice
but to scrap the unit so today is a sad
day
our washing machine is going in the bin
unfortunately
after three sterling years of service
it is uh irreparable so we've stripped
it for parts
and uh we're going to be disposing of it
now disposing of rubbish here so we've
uh we're paying about four dollars a
month i think
and that gives us access to this green
skip
so we can put our rubbish in there and
then they take it away and dispose of it
good grief you're having a busy day
husband oh
quite sweaty down there very sweaty and
very fumey with the acetone
what are you doing i'm taking the
foam backing off the old
strip lighting because the strip
lighting over time as yellowed
so that's the current one and this is
the the new one
current very good yeah but uh what's
happening with this
is um it's on all of it you see the hot
spot there that's actually
sort of melting and getting quite hot
when it's being used
so and it's also discolored with age so
it's just time to put new stuff in
then just lift these off so are that's
the old ones
well that works
so are you all done uh yeah
yeah just uh flip the switch fairly
straightforward actually look at that
they're way brighter than the other ones
yeah
thank you greg it's a pleasure
i lying on the kitchen floor husband
we've had
a fridge seal hanging around the boat
and i've not put it in because i thought
it would be really really complicated
it comes out quite easy actually i
thought i'd have to unscrew a whole load
of bits and pieces and stuff
so i just i just need a little wedgie
device
to slot this in
they say to put it in place and then
just wait 10 minutes for it to
sort of lock in place moment of truth
just check the seals aren't going to
pull out
it looks pretty good
thank you fridge seals in australia
the only company that i could find that
does these so it was good
and uh yeah easy to install so it's
another job off the list
comfy down there yeah just uh
got some super glue this is an update on
the
gosh these were easy seals to fit to the
fridge story from the other day
they keep coming out they're easy to fit
but they haven't stayed in
so what did you do i contacted the
company
and they said yeah what are you super
glue for that i've just got visions of
the glue in the fridge shop never been
able to get in there again
see how we uh yeah every time we've
opened the fridge since they were
fitted the other day they've fallen off
six weeks in masro was plenty of time to
relax
re-provision and complete a number of
much-needed boat projects
but we now had itchy feet and it was
time to explore more of what the
marshall islands had to offer
next stop malolap atoll
