Fun day away from the boat yard, and a great interview with an amazing charity. We also got to check out some important safety devices.

previously on Moneypenny we actually got
around to some spring chores there was
some sand in stirring sir rowland and
some Tippin amongst other things
today we are taking a break from
projects we've left our little boat yard
in the north and we've come down to the
little boat yard in the south because
today is yata Palooza your to Palooza is
a really fun open day held by Crowley's
yacht yard down in the south side of
Chicago I open up their yard and that
you come and have a look at all their
facilities their workshops and their
spray booths their tents for music food
and drinks as well when you're not
filling your face with some of the tasty
treats on offer you can attend some of
their educational seminars these cover
everything from woodwork to fiberglass
and of course the engine maintenance as
well there was also a very very good
safety at sea demonstration nautical
donations also hold their annual flea
market it's a wonderful opportunity to
poke through all kinds of bits and bobs
that might be useful that have been
donated to them not only do they have
their flea market donated chandlery
supplies they also got a wonderful
selection of donated boats and we'll be
talking about these later on I've got a
thing about classic boats and this one
looks like it might be worth a little
look we attended the safety at sea
seminar we learned all about some
different types of flares and how far up
into the sky they go and that affects
from how far away they can be seen
apparently the earth is round that came
is news to me after some brief
instruction and then a little
demonstration we were allowed to get
hands-on as well I think it's really
important to know how to use your safety
equipment in the unlikely event you ever
have to it's amazing some of the things
that you learn that you wouldn't
otherwise think of in an emergency
especially how to hold your flare out of
off your flare
the bottom edge hold it away from you so
in case you fall
have the plane in your face the flaming
toothbrush not after the handheld flares
it was time to get a little bit more
pyrotechnic time to look at some flares
that you can see for a further away you
see the firing with a firing pin in the
band and when you pull the trigger f it
it activated it's the primer and the
primer has the powder and a sense of
flare up this was really useful I've got
one of these on Moneypenny but I've
never used it Michael you'll shoot the
flare that was fun very good now there's
more than one type of handheld flare and
this demonstration gave us the chance to
see all kinds of different models and
different types and see what will make
most sense for us on our own vessels
I'll take that hang out you're gonna aim
upwind just pull it out it only have
like out the way I don't have a delay to
it up wit you're still down wind but
that's alright it's okay you see they're
all telling me to aim up win but as you
can see when I liked it it sparks it
flares and it smokes and I'm not having
that blown back in my face it's
important to know how to use these
things
you're eight miles out it was only a
matter of time before somebody brought
that up is that magnesium the last place
we took a look at with a long distance
place at least fly over a thousand feet
in the air can be seen from 41 miles
away and burn for over 40 seconds let's
take a look at another one of these from
start to finish you'll be able to see
just how long it burns for just how high
it goes this was a really well done and
informative demonstration it was good to
get some hands-on experience with
something that I hope myself the crew of
money penny and any one of my friends
and associates in sailing community
never ever have to use but it really
does help to know what you're doing in
the event of an emergency now you
remember we were talking about nautical
donations and all the wonderful donated
boats they had for sale let's go
shopping so I've been complaining about
my dinghy since the day I bought it
pretty much last year I think you might
remember i lost my oars
[ __ ]
newest for me dingy and
a walker bait eight oars anna d for less
money than i was going to spend on a
pair of oars a certain pastry jean
during today's a good day this was
wonderful not only were we able to help
out a good cause but we also got a
really sweet thingy at a great price all
this was courtesy of nautical donations
and michael was able to spare us a few
minutes to tell us more about this
amazing charity now please excuse the
audio there's a lot going on in the
background but you get the idea so
Michael tell us about nautical donations
so nautical donations is a local charity
in Chicago where a 501 c 3 charity that
raises money for nautically related
nonprofits in the Greater Chicago area
through the sale of donated votes of
equipment what what services can you
offer to decide as of Chicago so we
offer a great pricing on used boats that
are donated to us as well as great deals
on assets of nautical equipment and
their and supplies hardware so you're
really helping people to get in
assigning a kind of grassroots level
exactly so we're we're trying to
obviously raise money for nautically
with nonprofits but we're also part of
our mission is to get people back in the
recreation
make their settlement I mean ballpark if
I were to pick up out of my first boat
you know a nice condition 25 to 30 foot
sailboat what would I be looking at
anywhere from 2,000 to ten thousand
dollars but we have 20 votes under five
thousand dollars so much will you
provide excellent services to the
boating community and but I'm assuming
you don't do all on your own I mean how
can people get involved have some people
help you absolutely not we rely a lot on
a on a volunteer base that comes in well
there's wonder they're here okay and
sizing the bonus of you know giving you
time and giving a little bit back to the
same what kind of on to expect to get
well they can get a lot and it depends
what their interests are but we have
people it's a great way first off to
meet other people in the boating
community there care about the
recreation of boating but if you also
get the obvious you also get it true
that you meet people different toys and
it's a great opportunity to learn
different parts of voting different
types of line also get facts but also
sailing experience we also get both
donations that we need people to help
deliver some time on the water well
unless that's actuarial I was in awesome
because I mean you're selling your sign
prices and the equipment where is this
equipment come from is it all donations
it's all donations so how can people do
a nightmare how do they get home so you
can reverse give me a call with what you
want to donate so we accept boats any
type of boats it doesn't have to be in
perfect condition for us to accept it as
a donor of a boat you can also specify
where you prefer the proceeds of your
donation to go to get him up so a great
opportunity for you to kind of really by
the way in terms of what what you do you
benefit you also accept all sorts of
equipment so if you've got a garage
anything marines related gear
electronics line anything you have just
go to our website we've got two donation
forms one for equipment and one for
boats fill those out give me a call at
seven seven three six seven to twenty
eighty or email me at info at nautical
patience org and we can arrange a time
for you to drop it off at our location
and Crowley's got yard at 34 34 East
95th street exit any donation too small
or too big no we take anything
everything from a Mopar mechana wd40 up
to a 40-foot so much and I'm Billy even
a half empty a can of WD 40 maybe so
Michael how can people get in touch with
you give us a call at seven seven three
six seven to twenty eighty can also
email us at info and nautical donations
got work that's employees and
information at nautical donations org
and also you can find out more
information about any of our services
that's how to do not at on our website
at www nation org one last question how
many boats have I vote for me now 2 2
and Counting to encounter that's our
County excellent thank you so much for
saying no problem next time or money
penny we go and collect our lovely new
dinghy before putting the finishing
touches to the spring projects fresh
coat of bottom paint and hang the
fenders in the dock lines to get ready
to launch and who knows she might just
get wet
Wow
