Ever heard the number one rule in sailing 'Keep The Water On The Outside Of The Boat'?! In this weeks episode we fix a major issue that has been plaguing us. It's a big job and one we have been putting off, however with blue water and green waves soon to be swirling along our decks – we need to get this fix sorted!

We are an adventurous couple who live an alternative life - a life at sea. We feel better connected when we are sailing. We live simpler and have less impact on the environment. We take the time to immerse ourselves in different cultures, meet amazing people and experience what the oceans and our planet have to offer.
So come aboard and follow our adventures as we sail and explore our beautiful planet!

Transcript:
in our last episode we answered your
questions about us about our piracy
tactics and our cruisin plans so welcome
to planet chaos so yeah it's always um
confindent maintenance is fairly
consistent on boats but every now and
then you have to sort of pull over and
and stop for a while and do some really
big jobs which is what we're currently
doing we've had leaky tow rails for
quite a while and so waters getting in
the boat when we're in fairly good
weather and getting in all the cupboards
which is really annoying and the boats
quite wet so we've undertaken the big
job of pulling off the tow rails and
rebidding them but what this has
actually been done before and it didn't
end up being quite successful so what
we're going to do is take all the tow
rails off and then we're going to
fiberglass over all of the holes that
have already been drilled through the
deck and then we've basically got a back
to basic kind of platform to start with
and then we'll put the tow rails back
down again
but it is a huge job we're basically
having to pull apart the entire interior
of the boat so that's the ceilings out
and the walls out all the way along the
boat in order to get into the tow rails
and all the deck fitting nuts and bolts
to undo them and then pull everything
off clean it up and reboot it so that's
a big project for hopefully just another
sort of ten days fingers crossed
yeah but I'll just show you we've
started in the aft cabin and I'll show
you what chaos is in there
okay so welcome to our ask Kevin it
looks very much different from normal
there's normally a set of shelves along
here and a set of shelves along here but
we've had to pull all of those out and
then we've pulled out the wall lining
and then we've had to pull out the
ceiling underneath to access the tow
rails and all the deck fittings that we
need to get to and as you can see that's
bare fiberglass and this is these points
here are where the tie rails have been
leaking water so that's an example of
the first section of Tyrael that we've
taken off and that's all just this is
all just corroded away anyway it's 30
years worth of work this galvanic action
[Music]
sure exactly what that the correct
terminology is but that's probably the
worst section that we've got here so
that's you know the rest of its probably
only going to be better than it with a
bit of a bar what's happening here my
honey
well as you can see we've we've got one
section of Tyrael often we've we've
cleaned it all up so it sort of looks
okay at this point in time we've we've
actually run a small feeder resin we the
whole meets the deck which is just that
little crack in there so we've we've
made a thick resin up we've we've trails
a little bit in there and then now we're
gonna we're just gonna lay this tape
over it just to help strengthen them
strengthen it all up and alright drill
the holes and pop the tire rails back on
hopefully should be no more leaks we
were doing this just because it was
leaking so bad we're not really sure
where a lot of the water was coming in
from and mostly you could see it was
leaking down the bolt holes but we're
just doing a full on fiberglass job just
a yeah basis cover all bases because you
know this is sort of day three we've
we've really only got to the point near
where we've got one section of rail off
so
it's it's gonna be quite a big job the
inner workings of a sailor's food locker
so you know just reach the part where
we're going to take the tow rails off
from inside from the galley so we have
to access pull this cover tap we take
and so that we can access given behind
the cupboards and access the Tyrells up
under there there's some wind up under
there so yeah if being the galley
hopefully this won't take too long the
section
[Music]
how's it looking money
well done I'm pulling all the shows it
yeah 30 years of mankini not very pretty
but
anyway we'll clean it up won't get it
sore
peachie bad
this there's a fuel tank brewery there
in
the
will retain breathers
certainly pretty ugly looking
what Mesa don't know us issues they were
this mobi yeah yeah they go to a growing
honor and stuff that's correct yeah yeah
that's a good motive is that oh just
what I read Enoch I you know what you
love you junk like that every week so
welcome to day 9 of our rebidding the
tow wells
Tourelles project and welcome to our
galley as you can see most of the galley
cupboards are missing and dones just
been in there replacing some of the
hosing which was hidden behind the
cupboards growing lots of mushroomy
moldy spores which was quite gross and
so we've replaced those breather pipes
and water pipes and also giving it a
good old clean up and repaint so that's
good
yeah I have to say the mold that we've
been finding when we've been ripping
away all the linings to access the bolts
for the tow rails and all the other
associated deck fittings has been quite
challenging but the boat is feeling well
I suppose at the end of it you've got
nice and fresh in new and I can sleep
safely knowing there's no spores coming
to get me in the middle of the night so
so far we have replaced four sections of
the tow rails and the most along the
stern of the boat and we've replaced to
staunch ins and done quite a bit of
fibreglass and we've been fiberglassing
along all the rails as you will have
seen and then fiberglass thing over the
actual all the holes that used to go
through the deck so we've been basically
started with a whole new blank canvas so
we know there's no point that it can
actually leak outside of the holes that
we drill
yeah so we've then recycled the toy
rails that we did have and put them fix
them up and fixed up a few bits where
they had corroded off too much and put
those back down so we've done the to
staunch ends are turning block we
removed two two eyes I guess I clicks
that we kept popping our toes on all the
time that we never really used so we've
got rid of them
we've rebated this solar panel and the
solar arch base joins where they go
through the deck and done the two dingy
clips and yeah the four toe rail
sections and that has taken us a total
of nine days so this is an interesting
little scenario here this is where our
well the previous owner talked Darrin
that a few years ago or years ago he was
up against a pile on a steel pylon
against a duty and a big theory went
past and the boat took a bit of damage
along the side of the hill and we it had
been weeping from the outside and Darrin
did a bit of a repair which is this
white five of us that you can see from
the outside last time we hauled out but
it was still leaking from the inside so
now that we've taken the walls out we
can see what's actually going on so it's
vision here and you can see there must
be bits of steel in here still that it's
sort of leaking from the inside so
Darren's going to do a repair on here
he's going to grind that out from the
inside and then eventually will come it
again from the outside and hopefully the
repair will be complete
I win checked out a wooden boat many
years ago without sea salty sea dog
friend of mine and it was pretty funny
as a young young and just getting into
it to watch him move along the hull with
us with a big pocket knife and just go
jab jab jab into the hull and he said if
anything is rotten you know you've got
to work on that patch and so I kind of
got over the fear of digging holes and
boats but this is interesting
how's a guy thereby having fun
Oh digging holes in the side of that
girl's hell yeah yeah well place it's
about the waterline
oh did she
you get mallet
[Music]
so I'm just having a bit of a rest
it seems the screws in my neck recently
got put into my neck having a bit of an
aggravated kind of morning so yeah we're
still doing our toe rails and we decided
the easiest way for things to not cause
my nakedness train was for Darren to do
the strange postures trying to get
underneath the Tyrells to put the nuts
back on the bolts and for me to just set
up on deck and hold the bolts Diddy as
you don't want the bolts turning once
you're starting to sort of glue them
down otherwise you break the Sikaflex
bond and water can get in but even up on
deck you have to get it to get yourself
into some strange postures and my neck
just doesn't appear to like that sort of
horizontal holding it horizontally it
seems to really bother it yes so day
eleven
I think of anti rail project it's been
raining the last couple of days on and
off which has been causing us a few
delays and of course we had a whole
bunch of holes drilled through the boats
so
yeah some areas that the boat got quite
wet so Darren's just made me a nice cup
of tea and I'm going to have a ginger
nut and a bit of a rest
[Music]
so you're a bit of an interesting
episode yesterday yesterday afternoon
didn't get to film it unfortunately but
Darrin came down the companionway stairs
with a bit of a curious look on his face
and drill in hand and six of chain
plates are actually encased in
fiberglass and
we've discovered unfortunately they're
holding water so he came down with the
drill to check whether there was water
in fact on the template and about two
litres of water came pouring out all
over the all over the place inside so a
bit of a mess everything got wet all the
food got wet jumping around with sponges
and water and whatnot trying to clean up
the place so very curious times on board
we're going to have to look at the chain
plates after we've finished the toe rail
job and see whether or what condition
they're in fingers crossed
they're still okay but yeah it's going
to be quite a big job anyway we'll keep
you posted
what's that you my honey
sandy beaches clear water what it looks
like this is only a moment in time my
honey I'm an intern
seems like a long time it's a long
moment in time that glossy magazines
they just lied
they lied it's not all sunshine and
rainbows
after shadows
get any better than that
so in the middle of a lightning thunder
yes sir this is an example of what we've
been finding with some of the store
chains that were originally put in with
these little backing plates made of
aluminium I think or some sort of metal
and they're just not it's not been
enough area and not enough coverage and
over the over the years that just works
their way cracked right through the hull
and created this leak so yeah we've had
to take this all apart basically if you
stood on top of that five of us from the
deck it's really quite punchy you could
almost put your heel through it so we
have been grinding away the entire area
of that fiberglass and then building it
up again and creating basically a new
part of the deck then putting on new
backing plates fiberglassing thousand
much much bigger backing plates yeah
then rebidding the Storch and so that's
what's been going on a bit disappointing
to find it but at least we're getting to
repair it
so that is the new plate that Darren's
been fiberglassing in and then I'll hold
that staunch in and he's just up on the
deck putting a bunch of five of us in
from the other side now so that's a joke
the year is it back yeah yeah you can't
stick it in too thick when you put the
hardener in it has a bit of a chemical
reaction sickly you make it the hotter
it gets
despised a liar in you know not not to
stick yep good job bud okay so we're
just about to
distortion back into its little position
and so what we've done is
we've taped around with masking tape
around the bottom of the store turn and
then we're going to we've got this epic
stick that we're using which is sort of
a silicon-based different probe product
asuka flicks but they say this is really
good as well so we're using this so
we're going to spread that around the
bottom the base of the distortion then
we'll then we'll pop our bolt through
and
a little trick that's quite quite
important is actually not to break the
feel of the silicon although whatever
product you're using so I'm going to be
a up top I'm gonna be holding the bolt
burn so that it doesn't move while
Darren's down below underneath doing up
the nut nice and tight so that's that's
how we managed to do it ourselves okay
so that's worked out quite well the sick
stick is hosed out over the side which
is really good and when that's all dry
we'll just be able to cut that away with
a knife and then I come away nice and
clean and look how strong that is so
we've picked fix it up really well
pretty happy we shouldn't get any leaks
and that's now nice and strong again
okay so we have finished that project
and it took a stunning 39 we certainly
didn't we thought we'd have it done in a
couple of weeks so I just wanted to go
through a couple of figures with you
we replaced 178 Tyrell bolts eight
cleats four blocks we removed two eyes
that we keep knocking our toes on which
was a real pain we never use them so we
got rid of them we repaired the solar
panel arch and the bimini basis we rebid
the tracks for the jib and the spinnaker
and store cheon's
two three six fourteen store chains we
really been a buttery fiberglass turn we
also replaced a bunch of holding all of
the headlining and did a heap more
fiberglass thing so it was a much bigger
job than we anticipated
and we use a total of two hundred and
eighty two bolts and it took us a total
of two hundred and seventy three hours
so work that out how much that could've
cost that it cost us a grand total of
thirteen hundred and eighty two dollars
and ninety two cents so yeah we did
pretty good okay
people have asked about the water maker
timer here's the that's a little follow
there are three Jake are digital timer
yeah it's just wired in any day anytime
any week it's that's great sixty bucks
uh yep just plug that for ten minutes
every two days and you'll keep your
water make a functioning nicely so thank
you so much for watching we hope you
enjoy the video and please subscribe and
give us a like and comment it would be
great alright okay ciao alright
