this week you find us exploring the
Capricorn group hoping to swim with
manta rays our first anchorage was to be
fitzroy reef where we've been told there
was a good chance of an encounter so
with the weather expected to close in
we made haste while the Sun Shawn the
Fitzroy entrance is narrow however well
marked so even though we'd come in late
for a reef and ridge we could still see
the bommies that we needed to avoid next
morning my honey was off to catch a fish
in a cut-through that we've spotted with
the drone and I of course was off
exploring the bright corals and
creatures in the neighborhood
[Music]
Oh
[Applause]
[Music]
like Puff the Magic Dragon we have a
fresh lady
strawberry raspberry banana let's get
into it and so we dropped off the
mooring and set sail for lady musgrave
Island
[Applause]
if you
this night we are carrying out to
another
Troy now we're heading off to lady
musgrave with weather has closed Phyllis
so we've got another day and a bit
before we need to be making ground
towards Bundaberg so yeah we could
actually sit out at lady musgrave I
believe we could sit down a southerly
Buster but we actually have some
commitments in Bundaberg that we've got
a catch ever going to give another video
uploaded for you guys so yeah our time
is short so we're hustling hustling
hustling anyway it's going to be a good
sale and all the laser in that I think
we're gonna get a spinnaker run fingers
crossed
which would be really nice
yeah we've got to get into it before
y'all green zones we're gonna sneak in
on us again a bit of a while we
can
[Music]
the big sushi roll up
[Music]
rounding the end of the reef we had our
ankle for musgrave so hoisted the
spinnaker in its sock and after
attaching the tech line to the clue up
she went for a spirited ride onto lady
musgrave island
[Music]
[Music]
so we're just checking out the marks to
line ourselves from to come in I'm very
excited to to check out this roof first
thing I'm going to do is get in the
water cuz it's pretty hot baby
well yeah we'll just check out this
channel make it through the channel hang
a righty and then find somewhere nice to
anchor up
yup baby excitements
open dope it's open
hello we had dolphins for about point
five of a second how exciting by the
time I ran back and got the camera they
were gone but they were dolphins they
were dolphins the channel at Musgrave is
well marked making for an easy entrance
at high water we were delighted with a
turquoise view that greeted us first
order of the day was to get wet and cool
down
then get the blood pumping with a little
supper size
I really liked us up not only is it
great exercise it's somewhere that I can
stretch practice my yoga and release my
mind an added bonus is that I can suss
out the reef from above and find
interesting areas to free dive
[Music]
today we spotted some reef sharks
playing about so when to have a look
not long afterwards we had a pretty
special encounter with one of our
favorite creatures
[Music]
[Laughter]
[Music]
out of the blue appeared a large manta
ray and what an absolutely beautiful
creature
[Music]
mantas are one of the largest fishes in
the world which is amazing considering
they feed on microscopic plankton and
despite their size they're harmless
creatures their tail doesn't have a
stinging barb and the teeth are only
used during their fascinating mating
ritual so I thought I'd talk to you
about the manta rays I mean how
beautiful was that that was just the
most heartwarming experience
sort of hang out with that manta ray
they're just so gorgeous they call them
the gentle giants of the ocean and they
truly are I think the Australian Manta
actually grows to about a 5 meter
wingspan and that was a really big Manta
and just gliding through the water round
and around and around that body was just
so beautiful and you know keeping an eye
on us and checking us out just to see
where we were really not scared at all
by our presence just beautiful what an
encounter
I just just magical encounter with other
creatures on this planet this is what I
mean about sort of making us sort of
putting us in our place you know we are
equal with everything in my view
each manta ray has its own
identification markings so you can see
on the white-bellied side they have like
black dots or markings and each one of
those individual to their manta ray
itself I think that's pretty cool kind
of like how we might get birthmarks
but I was also reading that that matters
are coming on the endangered list which
is a real shame for such a beautiful
creature
they're being hunted these days for a
specific part of their body for Chinese
medicine and yeah so it used to be sort
of subsistence hunting but now it's it's
sort of mass production hunting and
they're also lots more mantas are being
found with injuries
such as
net knitting and ropes caught around
them or strikes that you can see from a
boat so yeah there's just more and more
humans out on the oceans and and you
know leaving our waste for defenseless
animals and creatures to to have to deal
with and some of that waste is killing
them which is just it's heartbreaking
I hope the planet we can change our ways
if you do see a manta ray there's a
group called protect manta and I'll put
their link below in the description and
you can take send your photographs and
your reported findings to them because
they do take keep statistics and love
all the manta rays that they do come
across so yeah if you're interested it
would be really helpful I think to help
this group keep Studies on the marine
animals and creatures and biology that's
what I know in Australia I'm sure if
there are mountain raised in your areas
they're probably
organize monitoring groups that you can
find that you can track down and share
your information with just to help them
understand more about the manta rays
there's such a beautiful creature and
you know they deserve our help at night
and conservation as do all and many
creatures on our planet so that's my
little little thing for you encourage
you to look out for men to race if
they're in your area yeah and if you do
ever get to swim with mantas you know
what an incredible experience
they're quite curious creatures and so
they are quite interactive with
snorkelers and divers
