In this week's episode of Onboard Lifestyle we get to pull the control cables to connect our new Seastar MT-3 engine controls on sv basik. This upgrade will ...

okay so my job today now that I've got
the closet cleared out just kind of laid
everything all over the berth here and
just stacked it everywhere in here I've
cut the access through the floor of the
closet now I can get in here and start
organizing some of this cabling a couple
things I need to do almost looks
impossible to get down in here but I
need to start routing this stuff this is
the engine controls this is the big wire
harness for the engine controls then
I've got my actually my cables too this
will be engine control throttle and
here's transmission for Traverse and
neutral so those need to be rounded up
to the helm position that's what I'm
gonna work on today that'll clear out
this so I can get some elbow room down
in here so I can start working on things
this is what happens when you're
unsupervised what you can't do it I just
needed a little help okay so you know
what to do yeah Russell yeah thanks
Declan okay I'm gonna try to force-feed
it from down here okay
and you get folded in here first and I'm
pulling right yeah that's hard if yeah
these are really slippery
Oh hold on I have to pull myself into
this hole oh it's a big what you don't
understand
you need to be from underneath and you
just pull up here no okay all right so
what we're doing is we are bringing in
all the engine control oh shoot that's
why courts its it hitting something food
it looks like a tinning yeah I can't do
anymore really
yeah I gotta pull it back okay I see it
I see it
yeah okay okay okay go to it where is it
it is right up here it's about to take
the corner but it's hard I know okay so
I need to bring it up this side see like
out here is it behind something in there
between the two okay just bend it down
bending it yeah okay that's it okay
perfect one more that's it no nester
cannot dream our bean
another foot right there I know it's a
work yourself they don't okay oh it was
not that bad I'm so exaggerated no cuz
I'm taking my legs under the cables
mm-hmm okay next time you go in the hole
that's easy oh you're showing your age I
am okay thank you made it much easier
for me you are very dull okay this is
unfortunate
I've routed the port engine controls and
they're plenty long actually about two
feet long so I'll have to make up
something slack back in here but the
starboard edge controls only make it to
here right about to here to measure
these up and get one that's about two
feet longer
huh
[Music]
so after pulling all these cables
through it's a foot too short so we have
to pull them back out measure them and
get some two kilos easy should be fun
let's go come on out
good job now that we got the cable out
the ladies are gonna measure it up
[Music]
all right 28 feet off to the brain store
again get some new cables
at least I got a nice date of me
okay I got my new cables 32 footer
all right so teal just XP I said he's on
his way back to the boat from the brain
store
after picking up some more items
Emma
so your dad's coming back do you think
you measure right do you think you
measured the cables right yes
Hey hope you guys measured it right
can't believe it on us if it's wrong
can't skim install days almost over am i
doing it are you doing we're doing it
let's go I'm excited this week
okay got my new cables 32 feet long be
plenty long before I put them in though
I'm gonna tune up my control unit here
so a little bit tarnish it looks pretty
old I've been working on it trying to
just lube all the fittings the action
feels great but all these control cable
controllers are stiff and they're just
corroded in place so I'm trying to
salvage this we'll see
rap
well this may not be able to be salvaged
see how loose this one is these are so
tight on here they're just corroded the
solvent this one was corroded solid too
and I just tried to loosen the screw
head and it just shattered the little
piece of plastic oh it's just brittle
I'll try to find find these pieces see
if I can replace them I just don't trust
him now
okay okay off to the marine store again
well I've done my research now on this
unit here this is the Morse sl3 I mean
the action still feels nice on these but
all the plastic and arms and all those
plastic is corroding I looked at buying
the replacement kit just for the plastic
components it was $130 for the upper
half and another $150 for the lower half
tax shipping it's gonna exceed $300 so I
decided just upgrade and we got
something a little more trustworthy so
this bad boy is going in I'm excited
no plastic okay we pulled one cable out
to get a measurement on it I left one
cable in because we'll use this to pull
the two new cables in I'm also gonna tie
a messenger to it that way I could pull
the engine wire harness back through so
that's gonna be a tough pull here we're
gonna have three things pulling through
all at the same time cables go from here
through here back through here through
conduit under the seat they take a 90
through conduit under the seat into this
crawl space and then down over and into
the engine compartment 32 foot run we'll
see how it goes
okay before I start pulling I've labeled
all the ends of these so I don't get it
confused
and
now we'll get Pullman
all right Emma I hope you measure right
hi are you reading you want to go check
out the messenger okay so we take just
hold on so we taped this with the
messenger and I'm going to push this
thing through this is going to go down
to the engines and then the cable goes
to the throttle poles go down and see
what your dad's doing okay I'm coming
down 32 feet of this time to see
they go back up sure see how monster
yeah you did is that good
do we need more no these day was good I
think he said we're good
that was really smooth Emma you know
okay coming how do you need help
almost got it just like the last little
knuckle through there then it's stuck on
something I'm gonna pull it back okay
[Music]
got it goes easy yeah so easy okay now
that we have all the cables pulled it's
back down in the engine compartment I
have to make the connections down here
here is transmission goes right here and
here is Ronal goes to the engine but I
notice some corrosion on this let's take
a look at this thing let's get a little
bit of rust on it so I'm gonna take this
thing off I already loosened it
okay here we go let's get this thing
cleaned out before we put it back on
okay let's get these things cleaned up
what I like to do is stand us up put a
fresh coat of paint on
I'm not going with the Yanmar gray and
actually all the components that I'm
touching up before we leave the dock are
going to be in black and every year
after that I'll change the color
here we go
laughs and we were on that boat about
seven and a half years total and every
single year I would if I worked on the
engine any part of that engine I would
change the color so at a glance you
could tell how many years had it been
since I had touched a certain point of
the engine and we've kept pretty close
so I'm gonna I'm gonna use that same
method here so we're starting with the
stalks yeah mark gray anything I've
touched up now is going black and then
I'll come up with a color code
year-to-year as we cruise
okay these pieces have been sanded down
and painted
just let them cure a little bit longer
or we install
okay here's the cables we took off and
the fittings at the end here are
corroded I've tried to saturate it with
some penetrating oil to get them off
they're not budging I think it's best to
replace them so back to the Marine store
least I got a nice day today
okay and just like that I'm back from
the marine store and check this out
such a small quantity of items here so
small but they fit on the line item for
the receipt
ouch okay to get the engine throttle
cable connected I had to take off the
intakes and they had a little bit of
corrosion on them so I'm gonna sand
these up and put a fresh coat of paint
on these as well
okay now to educate myself on my new C
star engine controls try to make this
little bag of pieces make everything
operate smooth and do some reading
it was a little intimidating looking at
that little bag of parts but once you
laid all out don't make sense every
piece is there we'll be able to get this
hooked up today so of course by
switching models by getting rid of my
Moores and going with my new C star that
means I have to modify the cutout of
course and hopefully this little dish
out here will be covered if not I'll
have to build that back up I'll cut this
and find out
[Music]

[Music]
[Music]
okay it fits nice now the next thing set
this down god that feels nice
next thing I need to do is fill this in
here
this was the Morse cutout here and
here's my new cutout here so I'm going
to fill this and just so I could get a
better seal around this when I put it in
primarily what are you doing in there
you've been in there forever are you
okay no ladies Bruce there is no bruise
what yes there is no brute happiest
little doing is from being in the engine
room but yesterday it hurt so bad are
you sure it's so white there's no bruise
oh my god it hurts so bad no get the
camera on okay okay it's on boys and
their toys are you actually doing
something with this
yeah I'm just making the last little
connection here do we really know what
we're doing uh I didn't an hour ago but
I feel a little more educated now do you
I do can you tell me what you're doing
this is my throttle linkage this is my
gear shifter here
and I have to just put this last little
pin in while I'm holding everything it's
a little difficult it is because my pin
I bent it already
that's not good
there goes okay
thus the last in
okay now let's see if this goes together
okay look this that looks scary then
goes right together and slides right in
nice okay okay now looks good okay so
here's the did it feels good feels good
but before I start playing these long
ago to the engines to see what's
happening
[Music]
won't work neutral neutral okay for
engine boy troll
okay that's as far as it goes
okay neutral
reverse
okay neutral this beast is almost done
almost just a little bit of fine-tuning
once the engines gets you know up and
going so when's that gonna happen
tomorrow
ya know like to go first well we'll just
put the engine controls in connect them
yes baby yes I'll just screw them to the
wall and everything will work right okay
so I have to get the wire harnesses up
there yeah I'll have to extend one of
the harnesses because we know it's too
short I have the charging relays to put
in I have two connections to the battery
and then tie it all in to the main panel
so so Monday yeah I'll do my best
