hey everyone welcome back to SP basic
today we're gonna do a little break from
doing projects and talk a little about
getting a captain's license I'm not
gonna go into detail about what you need
to learn because that video would be 90
hours long but I will talk a little
about the personal reasons and actually
the emotional reasons and a little bit
about the process of how to get a
captain's license so stand by and we'll
get into this so the reason I wanted to
go and get my captain's license was
personal
a lot of people get it for a career move
but I did it because
I spent most of my life on the water in
the 70s I cruised with my father on his
40-foot Piper victress thousands of
ocean lands 1999 Lin and I bought our
first cruising boat it was a 40 of one
foot Lauren Williams trimaran we we
spent seven half years on that boat
three and a half in the Sea of Cortez it
doesn't matter how many miles you put on
the water there is always something to
learn and that's why I wanted to get my
captain's license so it's a compact
eight-week course that just gets you so
much information I mean you're gonna
learn about navigation you're gonna
learn about the 72 Col regs you're gonna
learn about safety you're gonna learn
about charting I mean you think you know
everything it's humbling taking this
class
and I'm so glad I did cuz I got one of
these
okay I'm off to my first class at the
u.s. Maritime Academy
I'll be honest I'm a little nervous I
really don't know what to expect yet got
my my book bag with a pencil and a
notepad and that's it
I'm sure I'll feel a lot more
comfortable after the end of today I get
my books my study guides and my charts
today
to be four hours a day three days a week
for eight weeks it's 96 hours of class
time
starts at six o'clock at night ends at
ten o'clock at night so I get there
during the day and I'll be coming home
in the dark I'll be honest a little
nervous I really don't know what to
expect
but I'll learn a lot today
see how this goes okay so I'm standing
right here right now our boat is right
here so it's just this short little walk
and what a walk it is God every day I
get to enjoy this 3000 step walk from
our boat through this historic ships
Wharf I mean is this just the perfect
setting for a captain's course
- something about this walk alone just
get you pumped up for class
okay I'm at class taking it at the
Center for wooden boats I mean look at
this setting is this just appropriate or
what

the walk wasn't too bad
took me about not know 15 minutes a lot
easier than parking I'll tell you that
parking in this area of the city is
about impossible and let's take a look
at where I walked from
let's see our mast is right there
okay
they once in the books
I have my study guides
I have my charts and I learned a lot
gotta meet the instructor captain
Jeffrey Sanders great guy
old salt full of stories very
entertaining with an interesting
teaching technique I think I'm really
gonna enjoy this you know in the first
four hours I've figured him out he
understands that there it is impossible
to learn all this information in the 96
hours during his class so rather than
teach you and cram it in during class
he's teaching you how to teach yourself
because two-thirds of this information
you have to learn you're gonna learn at
home
so to be fun I'm I'm getting more and
more excited
one day down in the first week
with eight weeks to go
I'm beat so Till's just text me he's
about a couple minutes away from home
and I am super excited to hear about his
birthday it kept us cos it's gonna be a
little rough for a couple months just
because I get home about 5:30 from the
office and that's when tea leaves to go
to class so we're just gonna have to
juggle it and make it work with Emma and
schooling for both teal and Emma and
this is gonna be great in the long run
so I'm super excited to hear what he has
to say
how was your first day star student star
soon we'll see what that I'm excited
yeah my study guys look at this tiny
tomorrow come on it wasn't that bad I
actually enjoyed it but it's
overwhelming how much material I learn
in the next eight weeks but we'll get
through it you can do it I'll be your
study partner okay class time was a fast
fast pace and you only had enough time
to skim through the study guides so it
was at home that you could really pound
that information in I can't emphasize
enough how important it is to get that
study time in I blocked out three hours
a day seven days a week during this
course and I can't emphasize enough how
much I needed that just to feel
comfortable going into the next day you
know it took me a couple weeks to get it
to the groove and then I really felt
like I was hitting my stride
okay I'm a couple weeks into this now
you know I really enjoy the walk here
be honest I'm running the 72 coal rigs
through my mind right now just trying to
get those that printed for the testing
and this this walk really helped
it's kind of my own time just to thank
and
and just kind of process all this
information try to get it to stick these
in my hand a lot or nice I don't know
why my mind is busy
you know I'm really not the type of
person that ever thought flashcards
would help me learn
but captain Sanders was adamant that
everybody made flashcards so I did and
even making the flashcards was
enlightening to how much information I
would retain especially using the
flashcards everywhere I brought him with
me I put a couple in my pocket and I
would drill every day with these things
Emma
sure got a kick out of it too she would
flash the cards and flash a smile I knew
I got the right answer so it was a great
way for us to bond
okay I am coming to the end of the
course real quick testing starts next
week
my mind is numb
it is hard to believe that I would be
ready be honest I am terrified
I'm not alone you know I talked to
everybody else in the class and it's
nerve-racking
but
I'm gonna do this
[Applause]
I'll just keep steady and Todd feel like
again
all right we're just taking a little
stroll on West Lake heading towards
South Lake Union it's great night
perfect to take a little cruise around
the lake we're going to go to the
Virginia pipe which is a historic
both and also it is teals graduation
we're really excited and can't wait to
see what the festivities are for today
[Music]
so at the ceremony when captain Sanders
called my name and gave me my
certificate the sense of accomplishment
was amazing I I was overwhelmed but when
he called me back to give me the black
cap I looked over at my family and I saw
the pride in their eyes that that meant
the world to me okay
graduation ceremony is done but I want
to have my own toast to the new captain
Cheers
oh and not only did he'll graduate but
he graduated top of his class
top honors so that is awesome he got a
very distinguished black hat hard to
believe isn't it hard to believe
actually it's not but I'm very proud of
you thank you
