it is chilly this morning it's 30
degrees out like unions are starting to
wake up look what I did do put some
insulation on the outside of the deck to
keep some heat on the inside it's 59
degrees inside the boat right now
temporary heats just not keeping up we
only have 30 amps to play with and too
much volume to heat on temporary heat so
get a little pressure from the family
get these installed so that's what I'm
gonna do I'm all ready for it well bust
these open
and see what I'm in for let's get to
work
it's time to crack one of these open
read a lot of reviews on these and
reviews are decent
these are just a simple little heaters
that run on diesel
I've never installed one don't really
know what to expect yet so let's check
it out
heavier guitar
this is the five kilowatt model and
reading through online these run on
anywhere from 0.2 to 0.5 liters per hour
the Baggies ducting whole unit out the
door delivered about $230 I mean you
can't go wrong at least to try it pumps
bracket everything's in here but
installation instructions oh well I did
read that online that it doesn't come
with installation instructions but I get
this sucker stopped so I just opened up
all the packages laid everything out it
looks like it all makes sense I think
this isn't gonna be too bad I mean
looking at this wire harness here it has
a positive and negative 12 volt lead and
three plugs one plug goes into the unit
one goes into the thermostat and one
goes in to the fuel pump that's about
the most difficult part and it's a
pre-wired loom so I don't think it'll be
too bad everything else looks easy this
is your exhaust this is your air intake
here's your ducting your mounting
bracket I will be upgrading some of
these these look like just steel parts
all get stainless replacements for those
for sure and this fuel line look at this
thing it's microscopic tells you how
efficient this is it just must sip the
fuel but I will be upgrading this as
well anyway better get going on this
what do you think Lyn
cool oh come on it's not that bad are we
gonna get this done today well I'll get
started today yeah I could see my breath
you are so bad
look at Emma she's in a t-shirt she has
the space heater on her compass okay
I'll get going so the big question why
are we going with a whole new system
instead of fixing what we already have
that's a great question
well is it easy answer the old system
ran a 110 each of those units drew about
12 amps of power as 24 amps of power and
the startup would surge to about 28 amps
so if one unit is running at 12 amps and
the other one would kick on at 28 amps
that would surge to 40 amps and that's
pretty tough for our generator to keep
up with it actually it wouldn't keep up
with it and we didn't want to have a
generator running all the time we want
wanted Heat
I checked out I didn't understand it my
biggest thing is I don't like to I don't
want to have to run a generator in order
to heat the boat right pull right anchor
I like it pretty quiet so this is a
great alternative and solution to our
needs
yeah the other units also weighed quite
a bit and this is a weight-sensitive
boat
they weighed 85 pounds each these little
diesel heaters weigh under 10 pounds the
power consumption on this it's 12 volt
it searches - about 6-7 amps on startup
because it has to kick on glow plugs but
after a minute or so the unit's going
and it settles down to about a half an
amp of power so doesn't use up much
energy at all but it does take diesel I
just hope it doesn't snow well that's
something we'll figure out as we go I
hope the new ones don't I heard that the
new ones don't so that's a big thing
it's gonna be how well we install it so
let's get busy so the other question
people were asking is now we don't have
air conditioning what are we gonna do
well sweat sweat away our fans our last
boat we had the same system on and we
used the air conditioning a handful of
times maybe it was nice it was a luxury
it's really not necessary and the times
that we did use it we had to be plugged
in to shore power so is it worth
dragging the air conditioner around no I
don't think so
I mean looking back it was nice but it
wasn't it wasn't a necessity yeah so
we're gonna go with heat only and
probably use these just sporadically
just during the winter when we're up
north once we head south diesel be just
parked until we have a nice cool day
that we want to kick them on again so we
don't plan on using these 24 hours a day
7 days a week but it's nice to know we
have an option to heat the boat not that
I want to stay the assignments for long
periods of time yeah we're heading south
ok originally I talked about putting
just one unit in here
but they're so compact I mean this
little unit would fit right up here and
I'd have all of this space so I got to
thinking why not put two units in this
locker run one more trunk line here to
hit some other areas of the boat and
rather than run the one unit on high I
could have both units in here running on
low there's plenty of space I could
probably put five of those units in here
if I could run the trunk lines but I
think two will work nicely in here and
still put other units in other areas
about let's start with these two okay
the first I need to work on is a
mounting platform to mount both units on
they're both going to face this
direction with trunk lines going through
this bulkhead here so let's get started
on the mounting platform first thing I
need to do this is actually the locker
in here just calculate this angle just
transfer this outside
I'm gonna build the framework out of
this stuff I love this it's PVC lumber
can trot it's excellent screw holding
and it works just like wood
just transfer my angle
and cut it up
[Music]
you have to make four penetrations
through this bulkhead so I need to get
this one out luckily this one was not
lit in
okay the next thing I need to do I just
cut two supports here I'm going to tee
it straight across here with that PVC
one by four
[Music]
okay the hardest thing to do in this
project is I'm trying to calculate my
measurements to the far side of the
sound insulation and this is an angle
little tricky not impossible
well there is a little good news look at
this cloud cover that means we are gonna
warm up about 10 degrees for the next
couple days
keeps it pressure off me
okay here's what I've laid out there's
my two pieces the cross support the two
mounting baskets
that all gets elevated 10 inches from
the top of that Walker okay let's get
assembling this
next thing I need to do is take away a
little bit of the sound ending to get
back to a solid surface I've laid out a
couple of reference points hold this up
in place and just trace out where I need
to cut
come on perfect okay I'm gonna drill
through this and drive three inch screws
into this from the opposite side
but I'll drill from this side to mark it
out let's see where these will come
through I'm gonna be drilling through
here so move all the cushions before I
drill through your snowflake pillows
love it say you like it there okay
actually they're not too bad take all
this out yeah I would take everything
out because I'm gonna have be making
quite a bit of a mess here so it may be
remove these two as well I'll start
laying it out
okay just hold this right up in there
slide it in the slots and I'm gonna mark
it out from the other side any region I
need really yeah can you push it make
sure you're flush to the wall okay right
on there yeah okay put it down yeah okay
one more time put it back up in there
and now I'm gonna skirt in hey use up
the hang tight yeah
make sure it goes flat you got it okay
just hang on hang on
how's that feel
okay brackets in the first part of it
let's test this before I put the front
brace on so that's lining up pretty dang
good gives me clearance to put my clamp
on right here
okay
now that my brackets in I still have to
plain across here and lay out on this
far wall for the outer support but this
locker is too tight to get this pivoted
into place with this sound deadening it
I'm not taking this out this is all
glued and permanent so what I'll do is
lay it out remove this insert it mount
that then I'll be able to tuck this up
behind it and screw it in place ok
everything's set here's my front brace
now I could just pivot this into place
now that this brackets out of the way
I'll screw from the opposite side from
the next Locker over into this one with
3-inch screws but this is a structural
bulkhead it's three and a half inches
thick so what I've done is set up some
pocket screws on the backside of this
that'll be plenty strong just pivot this
in
and that should do it okay now to get
that far side of this thanks Walker /
pantry now she'll be able to get rotate
this bracket right in there let's get a
look at this now
this is not going anywhere okay it's
getting dark outside I think I'll call
it for tonight first thing in the
morning start cutting in the new trunk
lines the exhaust ports and some of the
ducting Oh we'll probably get the tanks
installed as well okay see in the
morning okay it's a new day and a new
weather system it's raining out but the
upside is the temperatures up so it's a
little more comfortable in the boat
let's see what I got going back down to
my project here's where I left it last
night started laying out this morning
though here's one trunk line here I'm
putting a second one here and I've laid
out my two exhaust holes of a four inch
and a 2 inch hole saw here next just cut
these out
the big one got these holes all drilled
sanded smooth and since it's a raw edge
mixed up a little wet system epoxy and
I'll get it sealed before I insert the
sleeves
okay while the epoxy is curing I'm going
to start working on the diesel tank
actually there's two tanks I'm gonna put
the tanks on this wall elevate them off
and line them up right here they'll be
easy to fill ultimately I don't want to
have tanks in this locker but I want to
get a little history with these units
first and if we like them we like the
performance I'm gonna eliminate these
tanks and plumb the diesel straight into
our main tank but let's get these fired
up first and see how they do run on this
winter and make the decision so this is
where the extinguisher was I'm gonna
remove this fill this in this is where
it will wire loom these are the
fasteners for our old wire loom I'll get
this out prep this wall and start
getting a game plan for these tanks
okay the idea let's turn out these on
this wall they need to elevate them up
because the pickup tube comes out the
bottom here and I don't want to kink it
so I want a nice smooth arch to it
so it's gonna go right there I need to
make sure I have clearance when I close
the door they slide this back a little
right there they make some marks
there we go I don't want to cut away
this sound-deadening so I'm going to run
these spacers and insert them in here so
the tanks are elevated above
so I'll cut these in
just mark them out
[Music]
let's take a look at these they feel
nicer plenty of clearance for the pickup
tubes and it elevated it off the wall I
didn't want to hard mount these to the
wall because then the sound from these
units may just Telegraph right through
this wall and I could hear it out here
this way I have sound deadening behind
it my dad's still working on this
project and I'm pretty sure he's putting
in some ducting let's see
it's like he's going in they're gonna go
downstairs now you there yeah hello oh
hey can you tell me some tools um I left
my tape measure should be right down the
counter okay right here yeah and give me
a pencil and my razor - okay thank you
thank you what I'm doing right now is
going to take this trunk line down get
this all epoxy then so I'm gonna plumb
in this first trunk line here right now
so I can get the first unit in then I'll
work on this next trunk line okay I'm
inside the locker here just cutting a
few pieces to modify the death thing
[Music]
that should do it
have using four inch rigid ductwork I
didn't want to go with soft steps
because these are traveling through a
lot of lockers and I want to be able to
use the lockers with a rigid jock we
could pack the lockers and never crush
down a soft duck so I looked around I
looked at different PVC pipes different
schedules but the sewer pipe was the
lightest I would want one for strictly
for weight this is a really light just a
fraction of the weight of the PVC pipes
real strong holds its shape
triple wall has a little bit of air in
the gap here so it gives a little bit of
insulation I would think but what I'm
going to do since these new diesel
heaters have a little bit more exit Heat
know why the first three feet with an
aluminum duct just to play it safe
[Music]
put these heaters in I want to get this
piece of sound-deadening insulation on
first I have a few more cutouts to
accommodate and I've been taking some
notes as I've been going here and sketch
these out on here we'll cut this out and
see how close I got
feel real close okay I'm happy that next
thing I want to do is cut two sleeves
for the exhaust okay next thing I want
to do is get these out
I wanted to mount these in place just to
see how they'd fit in this locker I
marked out its footprint that way cuz
that's inducting it needs to go around
this as well
and we'll get these out of the way so I
get the units in yep I'm good
to the next thing I want to do yes about
two hours hey you excited sorry we're
taking Emma out for a fun kids night her
favorite meal and a little holiday cheer
okay it's time to get these in place
looks like there's a little gasket goes
on here most likely for a vibration of a
tank
[Music]
okay now we need to bolt this unit down
it came with these six millimeter studs
steel though ice went down the marine
store picked up the metric equivalent in
a bowl
[Music]
[Music]
and it bolted in yep go grab your coat
we'll go pick up your mom let's get out
of here
