welcome back to SB basing well our view
is gonna be different for a couple of
weeks here we are in Port Townsend on
the heart now we got a lot to do
we got hauled out yesterday got up this
morning and hit the ground running quite
a few projects we're gonna do while
we're on the hard let's go for fuel
already marked out it's quite a bit of
drew holes that we're not using I want
to get all these shaved out of here I've
marked him out with little red flags and
there's a dozen of them around the boat
comforting knowing that we get these out
of here we don't need them that's one
project another big project we have is
this bridge deck
look at this it's absolutely awful I
don't think it's ever had a top coat
this looks like primer to me and it's
just flaked off over the years we've
tried not to touch it until we hauled
out so that's what we're doing we're
gonna sand this all down put a nice
barrier coat on it and get a nice top
coat finish on this all the way down to
the waterline this should just look
amazing but before we do that these
Brits and stiffeners
we have one here this little one here
and this larger one here this little one
is actually not a stiffener but a wire
chase to get wires from the cockpit and
that to bring engine controls to this
old chute that was right here there was
an outboard chute that would come down
and just lower it outboard in here he
could see where this was
I want to smooth all this out get this
all nice and fair and build a stiffening
or stiffener just like that one over the
top of this that will really beef up
this area and add some more stability to
the cockpit and you also get helps break
the wave action if you get any as sloppy
seeds so that's gonna be a nice big
project we're gonna service our dagger
boards pull these out and make sure that
these trunks are free of barnacles
sanded and get all the hardware in there
that needs to go in there too to raise
and lower these properly
here's our sale drives it looks pretty
good a little bit of barnacles the boots
have fallen off over the years we'll get
new boots on there will tear to break
these down and service the sale drives
replace the zinc's these are key we sell
feathering props they're all composite
really lightweight and we do have one
that has a chip on one of the blades so
we'll replace that at the same time a
couple weeks ago I dropped the rudders
in blindly we were floating in the water
on a mount of these but now that we're
out of the water I could see that it's
not quite where it needs to be so I'll
loosen actually I'm gonna take these
cassettes out and readjust these rudders
so I could kick them to get nice even
reveals and then remount them and then
glass them in permanently that way I
could get rid of all this brackets and
really clean up these act ends if you
nice to get a little more glass in those
anyway it's a vulnerable point of the
boat and I know because while we were in
the marina we got hit by a 50-foot boat
and took a little damage right here I
did the repairs on the interior but now
that we have the boat hauled this was
alright at the waterline I couldn't do
this repair I'll take all this out dish
it out and really make sure that this is
all nice and secure and stable more
through holes on the exterior and we'll
be able to attack this rub rail and
there was a little bit of cracking on
this and I put a temporary fix a few
years ago on it well it's not a year and
a half ago but I want to pull the metal
cap off and lay glass cloth over this so
here's some right here
make sure we don't get any of this again
then won't be able to bring this white
paint all of our interlocks Brightside
down to the waterline we'll restriped
and new bottom paint it's a lot to do
and well I'm saying six weeks and linds
saying four weeks so we'll see who's
closer we got a lot a lot to do who not
to mention we want to do our ground
tackle before we launch I want to make
sure our ground tackle is all in huh big
projects but we'll just tackle it one
day at a time
she looks good I'm happy bottoms
look amazing it's like they were painted
a year ago and they've been sitting for
ten years without being hauled out okay
we got a lot to do four to six weeks
let's get busy okay the first thing I'm
gonna do is get these rudders and
cassettes out of here I have some work
inside of these trunks
that I want to attack I want to sand it
down to bare epoxy so when I get these
epoxy back in that they have something
to bite to and do some repairs in there
at the same time and I'm doing those
first because look at this it's
beautiful out and this is out in the
elements on rainy days I'll be working
under the bridge deck keeps me nice and
dry we've got a couple days of nice
weather so let's jump on these rudders
all right so now that teal has taken all
the bolts out it's time to pull these
and assess what is behind it I hope that
it comes out as easy as it went in oh
they're gonna come out like butter like
butter again
like butter I got a bit that was good so
we just put them underneath the boat
until we get everything in line and
ready to glass back in scrap this other
one
[Music]
there we go
okay now that these rudders are out we
could look at these trunk lines and they
look a little gnarly this is raw glass
here which is good I don't have to stand
too much but there's a little bit of
something going on over here
I want to dish all this out since this
is gonna be sealed in permanently I want
to clean all this up before we do that
okay we knew we had an issue inside of
these trunks and I was waiting to haul
out before we started work on this
because it's impossible to do in the
water and on the front edge of these
trunks this is all 90 car up in there
with glass on does somebody used the
camera here somebody use like an open
cell foam and then had a glass skin
overlay well that little skin failed and
filled this compartment with water and
this is just soaked out the moisture
luckily it's all glass behind it so
we're gonna dish all of this foam out of
here
just pick out a little at a time but I
needed somebody with little hands so get
in there and start picking that out get
it all the way back to that raw glass
back there and we'll take a look at
things we've got to get this out of
there but the good news is
we'll be that much later cuz this was a
lot of water back just keep chiseling
away look at this
crazy okay when did a good job dish this
whole thing out you can see it looks
perfectly clean in there now it's all
glass now but the Sun is blazing back
here so rather than do that other one
right now we'll do that in the morning
we're shifting gears and working on the
shade we're pulling this rub rail off
we're doing it for a couple reasons
there's a couple little cracks in here
nothing too major so I want to get some
glass cloth over here's a spot right
here like this I want to get this all
fared in nicely and glass cloth wrapped
up over this and this is a no look at
this this is an old dingy rail we could
polish it and try to put it back on just
a little segment years old
three-foot piece I don't know okay I'll
get it
so we're gonna look at our options
probably go with like a hard plastic
rubber or something like that I don't
know we'll look at it but don't bend
that too bad because we may have to
reuse this you could reach
barely a will attempt oh I'll get it
you didn't good
all right guys we're calling it a day
it's been 12 hours of non-stop work
we're exhausted we're dirty we're tired
and I think it's time for a drink
definitely I still have to make dinner
and we still need to have some semblance
of some quality time just not thinking
about the boat but boy she's looking
good and I am just so happy of what
we're gonna do see you guys tomorrow
okay
days are already starting to run into
each other here holed up in here a few
days we've been explored around the
marina yet we just started working rub
rails off
5300 is in here that's gonna be
difficult to get out of there
what uh figured that out started working
on the other side and got hot fast so
we're working the shade right now under
the boat for some reason Washington's
getting a heatwave we're gonna be like
close to 80 today it's crazy so we're
working on
knocking all this loose paint office
Bridge tag look at this we're gonna be
sanding it all but we want to get all
the loose flake off first you wanted
your work out who needs yoga with this
right just keep going you're doing good
look at all this the more you get off
the less after Sam
[Music]
okay she knocked off quite a bit off
here
I figure we do this every day for a
couple days Oh save me a lot of gumming
up a sanding paper later but now we've
got all these cleaned out now all that
old foam in here won't these brackets
off now they don't have kick up rudders
I don't need them so I take these off
next that way smooth next one up
get my hair out of the way the one
closest to the inside hull while lives
in there forget these women latter's off
[Music]
everything's loose here we go
Cal the hardware's removed
looks like 5,200 was used to seal the
sub let's see if these come off
there we go cheese weighs 5 pounds
killed all the fairing compound out with
it no big deal there goes another 20
pounds away I know right so we were in
the sling wine it was unreal that was
really cool and you they set us over
into a washdown area so we could power
wash the boat
although teal got most of the stuff off
it couldn't get off this late union
grime and we're not sure if it's just
spills over time or or what but I am
going through and just hand scrubbing
all of that off we are gonna be standing
everything down but I just want to get
this stuff off first so then we have a
clean slate to paint onto plus it looks
much nicer
what you got there Emma I don't know I
think it's a beetle or something which
is playing on the beach and then I found
it so cute oh it's trying to fly away
okay
[Music]
we've been working hard all morning
heavenly so we're gonna go grab just -
oh we're gonna go grab a bite to eat
take a break for a minute and then hit
it hard for the afternoon okay - okay I
need to class in these cassettes but
first I'm getting down to the raw 90
core cleaning this up drilling out all
this oh look at all this old hardware I
mean there must have been different
brackets put on four or five times so
just getting this all cleaned up so when
we get this cassette in here I can get
some nice cloth just overlap four inches
on to here and obviously we're gonna do
it on the inside - yeah that'll be yeah
all the way around this face it's gonna
be sweet yeah just a lot of prep here a
lot yeah but it feels good to just get
all of these brackets they're kind of
stabbed in and now does it make sense
anymore should clean it up
[Applause]
[Applause]
reminds me of like mortising in like a
giant strike plate in a door I've
basically scored my line keep the chisel
nice and sharp just I'm just guiding it
right over that night of course
substrate here you know this will take
me a good hour or two to do this but
[Laughter]
doing a little first date yeah you want
to show them what happened what do you
mean I'm gone for like literally five
minutes you got another accident another
well this is the one from yesterday it
was from yesterday you sent you draw the
chisel right through your finger yeah
but look how nice it closed it up with a
super glue yeah that's nice now I'm
gonna close this enough this is it's
like shredded it open somehow the
bleeding stopped but I got to get some
superglue on this one to keep it from
breaking open
it's ding ow that was Harry's not too
bad I think it could use a stitch no god
no
hey let me to open this up to get the
superglue in there there we go left
alone you could leave me alone I'm fine
every time you are really good at what
you do but you seem to always hurt
yourself I sacrificed my hands it's
always the hands you can't sacrifice
those hands I still have all 10 fingers
look at this they all work wow what an
achievement be careful I will till
tomorrow okay
this is uh getting there fast
when I'm laying this glass over this I'm
also gonna bring it around this corner
when we were in Lake Union we got hit by
a 50-foot powerboat clipped us pretty
good here so I'll do that repair at the
same time I've already done all the
repairs on the interior and so I'll dish
hold this out clean this up and when I
lay this glass of bringing around this
and really beefed up this corner get
aside so prep now
[Music]
I even dished all this damage out
letting this bake in the Sun for a while
just make sure there isn't zero moisture
in here before I do the repair okay you
guys we've been working hard time for
break let's go walk around town see
what's downtown
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
steals other hidden talent and Emmas
