alright guys we are in crunch time
because now we have a splash date flash
date t-minus four days it is chaos here
because he'll is running around like a
madman trying to get all the little
items buttoned up so this is very unlike
him we're gonna make this four days to
fly drop the camera start Standish
get one project I really wanted to
tackle while we're on the hard is these
dagger boards
this one's been rebuilt recently this
one needs a little more attention I'll
giving it that attention right now
also I'm changing all the hardware on
how we deploy and retract the dagger
boards so I need a couple of points that
I need to pull on so I'm gonna embed
some hardware with epoxy into these
dagger boards tonight and that's gonna
help with one pull point I do have cheek
blocks and other things that need to go
on these but I'll do that after paint I
need to do this now because when we're
painting bottom paint I want to paint
these at the same time
[Music]
okay I just drilled all this out dagger
boards are a high-density foam core so
what I'm gonna end up doing I'm gonna
epoxy those in instead of drilling a
hole straight in like this and epoxy
I've actually splayed the holes out like
this so now with the bolts in there and
the epoxy there's no way it'll come out
deck boards way probably I don't know 60
70 pounds so not much pressure to lift
these but I want to make sure those
never come out okay it's getting late
I'm gonna get these u-bolts a pox it in
tonight Lynn's mixing me up my epoxy
right now and I think we'll call it it's
been a good day huh
[Music]
been busy I straightened up my work area
I'm feeling a lot better
[Music]
[Music]
yeah
now it's squeezing it out
[Music]
okay we have these all epoxy it in it's
important to get these in tonight
because now when we're painting the
hulls I could hang these and paint all
sides all at the same time save me some
time so I'm not flipping these back and
forth I was actually at Lynn's idea
she's brilliant okay I'm calling it I'm
tired
time to shower up so we hit a hard first
thing in the morning
so it looks like Till's getting some
work done making some headway on these
dagger boards so while that's kickin
daggerboard trucks a little bit of work
under here it's not bad
there's just looks like when they did
the install they didn't quite finish it
off so I'm gonna finish it off here let
me show you what I'm talking about okay
here's our Dagobert trunks and this
profile matches our wing shape of our
dagger bars but when they epoxy this in
it looks like this edge was just never
quite finished its epoxy in but it just
doesn't look nice so I'm gonna take the
time strip this out and make this look
nice before we add bottom page I'll have
all this done in a couple hours so you
always say I'll do my best
okay the dagger boards are all prepped
we have lines and Emma is gonna help me
hoist these up and Lynne's gonna tie
them off we'll see how they do
well that was not too bad I don't
realize the scale of these till I stand
one up look at these suckers they're
over nine feet long crazy okay I'll
leave the pads under it for tonight
we'll pull those out and be able to
paint these let me do the bottom job so
next morning it's gonna be a big day for
us three days till splash taped off the
water line here we're putting bottom
paint on it's gonna be the first coat of
3 dagger boards are hanging they're
ready for the same application Lynn's
been over here stirring paint days
always make her happy
she'll be dancing here soon and I'm sure
we went with the fiberglass bottom coat
aqua it is a low VOCs low odor its water
cleanup with a hard durable finish we
are just not fans of what types of paint
yes when you swim next to a boat with a
blade of paint it gets all over you and
it's in the water and so you know what
we're going with the durable finish we
have no problem scrubbing the bottom of
this boat especially in warmer climates
so that's what we're doing
we'll put at least three coats of this
down over the next two days and it's
exciting I've spent the morning prepping
these daggerboard trunks I started it
yesterday this one's finished I feel
much better about this smoothed out the
water's gonna transition around that
blade much better now so while I'm
prepping the trunk on the other hull
Lynn's gonna start painting oh here she
is dancing already
she's gonna start putting down the
bottom paint so it's a big day and we're
excited
okay three days to splash we got a lot
to do let's get going
please laying down pretty good isn't it
[Music]
I know you love it don't you
[Music]
okay I'm bouncing back and forth from
the daggerboard trunk to prepping for
Lynch she's gonna be painting down this
hole here a little bit I just put down
some fairing compound so while it's
curing gives me about ten minutes here I
could start taping again boy there's
nothing worse than taping it's not that
it's hard well I'll take that back
it's for me it's mentally hard because
you're concentrating I'm trying to put
this tape down like a 64th of an inch
off of this line so you really have to
just pay attention just inch by inch
work your way across this and it's 200
feet of tape I'm putting down right now
it feels good to get new bottom paint on
I am NOT a clean painter like teal is so
but I'm getting there
hey you're doing pretty good I don't see
any dress I only had a couple of drones
but the way that you do things there's
like no drips it looks good though just
keep at it
[Music]
okay it's the end of the day here's a
big day while I was working on smoothing
out the daggerboard trunks Lin got a
good jump on the bottom page she
actually painted out probably 70% of
this boat by herself today she painted
the the dagger boards and just worked
her butt off all day I'm telling you she
did an awesome job everything just looks
perfect
this interlocks bottom coat aqua you
know it seems counterproductive but it's
a water-based product but I guess time
will tell
we'll have to give you some feedback
after we have a little history with it
[Music]
okay I'm gonna call it for today I'm
gonna hit it hard again tomorrow the
second coat goes on tomorrow and then we
wait a full day until the third coat
we're splashing in three days okay wake
up tomorrow morning and hit hard once
again hey guys
day two second coat
I think we're starting to get the hang
of this we're getting in a groove aren't
we so I just load up my roller and I've
learned now to go up it's a down so then
that limits
most of the drips but I get a heavy coat
here and then teal goes in behind me and
kinda does uh what is it like a tip yeah
I just roll it out with a finer roller
that way leaky you just keep applying
the paint and we get this done in about
three hours now we're getting efficient
ok the second coat is in the books
days young still got a lot to do today
let's take a look at it second coat done
this is a list of everything I have to
do before we hit the water two days left
so I'm just gonna started knocking a
couple he's out we got two days left I
got to get these done there get to work
a quick project I'm gonna do is get
these Dinks back on here
I taped this up to protect the shaft and
get any barrier towed or paint on so
we'll strip this off and see how it
looks okay I've got a little bit on this
surface all this want to make sure it's
nice and clean I want to clean contact
on that zinc on the drive unit here okay
I just put one drop of Loctite on this
I don't want it permanently in there I
want to be able to remove this later but
I don't want it wiggling free either
[Music]
okay that's an easy one
[Music]
okay next I'm gonna put on the Kiwi
props just read through the manual once
again and it's pretty simple you greased
the shaft
you take your Kiwi prop
align it with the splines this is the
retainer bolt that goes into the
propeller boss put Loctite on this first
thread that on tighten it up and there's
two 90 degree offset retaining screws
that actually seat into this group that
keeps the whole assembly from ever
backing out Loctite goes on those as
well and we're good pretty simple
[Music]
okay Kiwi prop recommends every haul out
to Lube five different Lube points one
day away to launch we still have to put
the last coat of bottom paint on it and
do a couple other projects but look what
we're getting there's a marine layer
this morning we cannot have any moisture
hit this hole right before pain so I've
covered up everything anywhere where
there's a drip coming down I put up
little drip edges try to keep this as
dry as we can we want this last coat to
be bulletproof I don't want any issues
by having water on it but my little drip
edges are working look at this
it's keeping off the hull we've got
everything else protected this marine
layer should burn off it doesn't show
anything on the radar I bet you this
burns off in an hour then we'll let it
dry out for a couple hours and still get
this coat on we have to get this last
coat today our appointment is for
tomorrow we're gonna make it just mother
nature through a little hiccup in our
day okay
we'll see you when the Sun comes out one
day left one day left leg okay that
little marine layer burned off couple
hours ago everything's nice and dry so
yeah I know that's right so Linds out
here putting on the last and final coat
of bottom paint I know I'll let you keep
going okay everything's looking good we
kept the whole dry and we'll get this
last coat on and then button up those
last few projects for tomorrow's big day
[Music]
or this machine right here drops us in
the water what do you think excited jeez
less than 24 we got a lot to do I better
get busy
[Music]
[Music]
okay honey
now the milestone this is so satisfying
the last coat is on peel on the tape and
look at that turning out pretty good
isn't it I like it well you must like it
I can see teeth those teeth good it does
I am uh I'm happy with that it looks
great look at that
okay keep going on to the next project
we're gonna splash here and geez we're
gonna be in the water in about I don't
know 16 hours
[Music]
and that's how we do it what do you do a
touchdown dance
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
well this is it
this machine right here it's gonna lift
us up in a half an hour they put new
plastic on all the straps so it doesn't
Mar up our new paint these guys really
really take care of you here in Port
Townsend impressive crew okay
boats come a long way when we started we
had a list and we thought it would be
six weeks of work well life got a little
crazy and it pushed on to a couple
months work but you know what we're done
everything that needed to happen in the
art here is done some of the work we had
to do were to shave out so many
through-hole fittings you know there was
some right through here down here I mean
they were all over just riddled through
and we've narrowed it down to just the
bare essentials we've changed
transducers we've painted the boat got
new Brightside food stripe and bottom
paint
this bridge deck was a mess just an
absolute mess
looking back to what it looked like well
there we go
laughs ready
it's happening quick
[Music]
we moved our engine exhaust
I've rebuilt this entire back of this
this had big hiccup rudder slots these
with cassettes in here and the whole
assembly used to just rotate up and out
we eliminated that there was damage
through here we got hit by a boat fixed
all that more through holes out here new
rough rails
boy the list is just amazing we got it
all done it's all coming down to right
now of course you know we're not done
working on this boat we use this fall
out to do everything that we needed to
do below below water and near water
we're gonna launch and jump right on
sales and ringing
new anchoring system
just a couple little odds and ends but
we wanted
Bobo here in about a week we can have
we're going to start traveling
enjoy the boat while we're finishing out
all the rest these projects we have all
the life and safety items done so it's
going to get exciting we're we're
anxious to start this journey and all
everything else that's left we can do
while we're traveling we're going to
build a hardtop this winter I want to do
a rigid boom stack pack
[Music]
and we're always going to be working on
this book so yes the adventure starting
but the projects will probably never end
sorry I just can't get it out of my
blood again
so they're fired up I gotta get ready
