This week's episode of Onboard Lifestyle, we cross our fingers to get a weather window to head South only Mother Nature had other plans. Its also Linh's birt...

welcome back to se basic one standing
out here in the mouth just wanted to
come check out this wave action that's
coming in over the bar the bar is closed
right now there's the 12 to 14 foot
rollers coming in breaking you can see
them all the way across the bay but
what's unreal is the last six hours of
ties been going out when the tide was up
and those 14 footers were breaking on
the jetty here it's amazing how much
erosion happened just overnight
do you see this path I'm walking on take
a look at this
[Music]
all this debris
washed up as waves were breaking over
hitting this and piling up against the
tower here you can see it all the way
down the whole jetty those waves must
have been massive just massive I mean
look at this this is the path for all
this material to move
[Music]
I'm telling you winds was blowing 25 out
of the South Seas built to 14 s and they
were coming right in the mouth here
definitely not a good travel day okay
I'll head back to the boat looks like
we're gonna be here a few more days
doesn't I really don't see an end in
sight yet kind discouraging you know we
wanted to be way down the coast by now
way down the coast but this is life
right now for us weather's been
dictating our schedule so we'll camp out
in Westport till we have a safe window
you know we're not alone there's a
couple of the sailboats that are in the
harbor here they're looking for the same
windows and we've seen them here just as
long as we've been here
[Music]
so we came out to check out the bar
conditions again it's a little
misleading in the marina it's kind of
calm and winds out of the East today
maybe blowing 10 to 15 looks totally
doable as far as the wind goes tell you
tell you come on here and you see these
conditions my you want to head out maybe
not today
closer than cut a little sneaker on me
but boy it's all it's not bad the waves
aren't bad it's this swell coming in
right now there these are supposed to be
if you look at the NOAA site they're 15
to 18 cresting at about 20 to 22 s and
they're coming right out of the West
right here yeah and over here it was
nice and sunny and we were it almost
feels like you could leave in the
weather like this but then this happens
[Music]
it's that time of the year we're going
to talk about condensation and moisture
it gets into the corners of your boat
where there isn't any airflow and it's a
problem it's a problem with every boat I
guarantee you you know we are not alone
there are $10,000 boats and there's 20
million-dollar boats and they all have
some sort of condensation issue when the
temperature is at certain point right
now it's 45 degrees outside and it's
probably sixty five degrees in this room
walls feel dry that's because these
walls are staying above the dew point
but when I get down below the waterline
the water line is about right here on
the boat as I scan down this wall now
you go from the high 50s to about 48
degrees the dew point today is 50
degrees so as I come down you can
exactly feel where that moisture is
starting it's a constant battle for us
how we do it is air flow we have to keep
air flow on in these walls you know we
can insulate and that's something that
we will be looking into but I don't want
to insulate the entire boat it just add
so much weight and you know we're not
interested in doing a lot of cold water
sailing we'll be heading south so it's
an issue this year and maybe in years to
come but for now we're gonna try to use
our little tricks to combat the moisture
will show you what we do and if anybody
else has any other tricks please share
in the comments because this is a
constant battle not only for us for a
lot of people like we could all learn
from somebody's experience let me show
you a couple other areas that are
problems on our boat
you know I really love our new beetus
hatches with exception of one thing it's
an aluminum extrusion and this aluminum
really transfers that energy from
outside that cold energy through to the
inside and all around the perimeter
we are constantly battling this
conversation it's one of the worst
offenders on our boat and we have to
stay on top of it one thing that we can
do is when it's not raining which isn't
often right now just crack the hatch we
don't lose that much heat out but it
keeps out a little bit of airflow and
that little bit sure dries things out we
have 11 of these Vitas hatches and we
have nine port lights and they all do
the same thing they get that
condensation around the rim so airflow
again when we can and when we can't we
have to just block them dry if we could
stay up on it it's not so bad but if you
neglect it they're gonna start dripping
okay one of the worst places on a vote
is inside of lockers you know you're
heating your cabin trying to keep it
comfortable here but it's impossible to
get that heat into these back corners of
all these lockers especially if there's
exterior walls involved so we did a
couple things to help keep that moisture
down one thing I do is make sure that we
don't hang clothes against an exterior
wall never touch close to an exterior
wall they're just gonna get damp and
mold another thing we did was in our
hanging lockers I added these goldenrod
heaters and you know they they do okay
they didn't do as well as I thought good
they're low watt draw 140 degrees and it
does heat this area but it's not enough
you still need the airflow so we end up
leaving that little heater on shutting
it down and leaving this door open just
to get that airflow if we don't live if
we close the store we're still gonna get
condensation in here so a little fan in
here is probably my next move
you know it's little things like here
we've got this settee cushion but it
touches this exterior wall you know
we've learned it in the wintertime just
put a little air gap here and that
little bit keeps that condensation down
I know it's not as pretty as it is when
it's all sitting flat but I'd rather
have that then a mildewed cushion okay
your mattress is a big issue when it
comes to moisture especially on a multi
low on a Cameron this is sitting over
the bridge deck so in a sense this is an
exterior wall right below this mattress
and when you have the body heat going
through your mattress and condensing
against an exterior wall it creates a
big moisture issue under your mattress
so we've done a couple things to help
that out we haven't eliminated a hundred
percent but what we've done is sure
helped okay let me show you what it
looks like under the mattress here
here's the insulation and here's the
hyper vent the stuff works real well
actually we put that against the hole we
insulate on top that and then we put the
mattress on top of that it doesn't get
rid of a hundred percent of the moisture
problems but it does create a much
better situation in there you get all
these wrinkles out before Linda sees it
she's very particular with her bed
making there while we're on a dog we
always plug in our dehumidifiers to help
the situation we have three of them
placed throughout the boat and they're
tucked into some of the problem corners
of the boat and it's amazing how much
moisture is pulled out of the air but
it's still not enough okay last year we
were having quite a bit of condensation
in Emma stateroom her bunk is not does
not sit over the bridge deck but it does
touch to exterior walls and where it
touched we were getting a lot of
condensation you remember that yeah it
was wet I mean we had to pull her
mattress every couple days and actually
dried out in here so what we did is we
tried to put a little insulation here in
the form of indoor/outdoor carpet and
this was a test and I'm really happy
with how it's turned out this we went
all last winter and now we're getting
into cool weather this winter and it's
it actually probably pulls out what 95%
maybe I don't know it's hard to tell I
think I think it's just called down
there yes it's keeping most of that
moisture out so I like the performance
of this we'll probably do this in the
other staterooms on the exterior wall
where the mattress touches just to give
it a little more barrier between the
exterior hole and the mattress
we've a few these fans installed around
the boat but we don't have enough so my
mom and I got a few more and we're
giving the home to my dad as an early
Christmas present they keep the
condensation out and we love that so we
wanted him to install them before
Christmas hope you like some okay the
Sun poked its head out for a little bit
it's nice out Lynne's birthday and so
we're gonna go have a nice walk while we
can
okay it's about a mile and a half walk
from the boat be about a three mile
round trip it's a nice habit just wish
it was closer to the ocean well here it
we can we can hear the waves breaking
all around us you just can't see it
we're walking through a state park now
and we should get to the ocean at the
end of this trail we'll see I can hear
it it's coming Oh at least compasses
enjoying it
it's just nice for him
[Music]
well they haven't quite calmed down yet
but it's getting there a lot better than
the last couple days
yesterday was my birthday yes it was 20
29 years old right there 29 years and
plus talk about the age now we won't I'm
still getting a grip of it and just kind
of accepting oh how beautiful you are
it's just like breathe all kidding aside
though it was yesterday started out so
good ladies I don't know about you but
there's nothing better than waking up
after your husband and he'd already been
up here and he has been hard at work in
the galley scrubbing it top to bottom
that's right I know how to treat my
woman that was an amazing little
surprise it's the little things that
really make it for me I call us that
stove buffed it out yes yes that was
okay Lynn loves her galley and you know
I really do I figured you'd appreciate
that and I did it just it it just set
the whole day off to a great start and
then after that you know it's crab
season
so Ann teal is not a cook by no means he
does not enjoy cooking but I want but I
wanted to try I didn't want her to have
to cook her breakfast it was more of a
brunch brunch I don't normally eat
breakfast so this was something that was
it was a treat so I did my research I
looked on the internet I read everything
I could and he stressed he was like I
always always somebody in this court I
think I almost pulled it off
he may be eggs or crab eggs benedict
which was spectacular
I had yeah it was it was good it was
delicious Emma even got in on the action
so so Cheers that just to make her so so
white not killing you yeah yeah I'm
still here so obviously hit he did well
but he really
nails that poached egg he has his own
technique now I do I've read everything
on online and said no I'm just gonna
figure this out myself but it's a good
job thank you
so you notice Emma is missing right now
where is she
Oh funny that's because since we've been
here she actually has met some kids so
local kids that she it's they're about
the same age that she's gotten along
with and last week they invited us to go
and have a good family day at the arcade
which she had an amazing time that was a
lot of fun I had amazing time that was a
lot of fun somebody got a little
competitive
because it was like going to a carnival
I can't help okay anyways so tonight
they invited Emma over for dinner and so
we just wanted her to have her alone
time without us and it also was nice for
us also to just kind of kick back and
just enjoy a glass of wine and just plan
just be adults oh I know so that's what
we're doing last week when I made that
amaretto
I also made crab mac and cheese and we
didn't show it on the video we didn't
show it on the video for whatever reason
Oh actually I know why it's and the
reason is is because I've never made it
before and I wanted to test it out and
kind of play around with the flavors and
it turned out great it turned out better
than when we've gone to restaurants and
had crab mac and cheese one because
there's a ton of crab that we put in
there still I should complain that there
was or he didn't complained he just
commented that there was too much crab
oh it's amazing it was like it wasn't
crab mac and cheese it was like crab
with a little mac and cheese in it but
it was really good I promise you guys I
will show you how to do it yeah once I
start measuring it was rich it was it
was decadent it was it was but it was so
warm and cozy and delicious it was good
it was good eating it so - guaranteed
look forward to that one that one's
coming up yeah I enjoyed making it every
year
teal offers or tries to take me up to
dinner
my birthday yeah I do it and every time
I say no not I'm sorry not every time I
love happy hour having a couple orders
but ultimately I like having dinner at
home that's cuz you love to cook not
only do I like to cook but it's the best
place I mean we have Bar None the best
view it doesn't matter if we're on a
lake or an anchorage or whatever we have
the best view I mean you have 360 view
of the water you are in the comfort of
your own home and sometimes I may or may
not be in pajama pants that's right so
comfort factor yes there is a comfort
factor and I get to spend it with teal
and Emma and compass and have to worry
about being rushed off to another place
or whatever and and you get a half a
meal that you want and I get to have the
meal that I want cooked exactly how I
want it I'm not picky so that's the
other thing I plan ahead for these types
of special meals we don't have these
special meals all the time you know I
cook normal foods usually birthdays
holidays birthdays holidays
anniversaries anything that's big I
always have a special occasion meal in
the freezer and one of those is lamb
chops that I absolutely love from New
Zealand and root vegetables and herb
mashed potatoes that's what we have for
my birthday meal now my mouths watering
again the meal was amazing absolutely
perfect so I'm gonna show you guys how I
prepared it so first things first is
infusing the oil I'll take a good olive
oil and I'll have a couple cloves of
garlic and slice those up and toss those
in with the oil along with some rosemary
sprigs I'll let that simmer a little bit
and and cool that off before I go to the
meat the meat is already French I
purchased it French for a reason because
I like to look of it and then at that
point I will cut off any excess
fad and take it a step further and I
will cut them into individual chops I
like to infuse that oil into the meat
about six to eight hours prior to
cooking it now that the meat is
marinating I looked at what vegetable to
have on the side but I wanted something
sweet to go with the lamb chops and I
thought what better way to have an
assortment of organic carrots of
different colors and sizes I drizzled it
lightly with olive oil and some dried
herbs on top of that with a little salt
and pepper about 10 minutes before
everything is ready I'll take out the
meat and Pat it dry so then there's no
more moisture on there seasoned it with
light salt and pepper and get a pan out
get that thing searing hot and use the
same oil that is infused with the garlic
and rosemary the smell is amazing and
that first sear it just there there are
no words I'll then serve everything on a
bed of herb mashed potatoes the root
vegetables and one or two chops you
don't even need a side of mint jelly or
anything it really stands on its own
okay that nice weather was sure
short-lived very short-lived looks like
we're gonna we're expected in the next
three days five to seven inches of rain
and it's gonna blow 25 gusting to 35
tonight so we're hunkered down and just
getting all cozy yep this year has it's
been a lot of highs and a lot of lows
for us and we are so grateful to
everybody that has been following our
journey this year we have a lot going on
for next year and we cannot wait to show
you guys what is the store
well our family would like to wish you
guys a good here comes the wind we'd
like to wish you guys a Merry Christmas
and a Happy Holidays
so yes Merry Christmas you guys we'll
see you soon then so heavy will it feels
light
we lost our trap bucket that hurts
[Music]
