welcome back to SP basic as you can see
we're underway finally had our weather
window looks like we're gonna have the
seeds of calm down so we got a little
bit of maybe two days of traveling
well at least make it into ill wakow
tonight and we'll see from there if the
weather looks good we might shoot over
to warrant in the next day but we're
gonna take advantage of it the bars are
open for the first time both grace
Harper and the Columbia bar are both
open the same time since I can't
remember so this is it let's go
[Music]
[Music]
okay we're just sailing along here Jib
only we're doing five knots don't want
to run the engines because we're just
going through a sea of crab pots I mean
literally thousands of them around us I
don't want to chance getting those
tangled up so we're just gonna sail
through this for a while not real windy
but we're doing okay Linds up here on
the lookout tell me which way to to
zigzag do these but they're everywhere
[Music]
so this has been my position for the
past four and a half five hours I've
just been a crab hot wash and this is
why it was so important for us to travel
during the day because today it's barely
decent
these are pretty mild the wind is just
perfect for us to put up our head sail
but it's so hard to spot these traps and
there are thousands of them out here
we're just weaving in between them and
around them and just trying to find ways
to sail tonight
[Music]
it's pretty spectacular out here after
the second west part for so long I can't
complain and that also makes me really
excited once we put on the bait this is
a great motivator because we have nots
with just our little chip so I can't
even imagine how well we're going to do
with the B Stella and our Friday she's
made for this Emma is tucked inside with
compass they're just enjoying the day a
little bit warmer because I am wearing I
think more layer and bottom and I'm
freezing I don't think I can feel my
toes it was about 30 degrees this
morning and then there's a
probably gonna be
[Music]
[Music]
okay we're still making good time still
just flying jib only and dodging ease
right here
they're everywhere I hear still gotta
stay alert
[Music]
just seeing one after another
[Music]
they fall off here this this one
[Music]
okay
[Music]
there's another one here another one
there they're in line usually once you
see one there's gonna be 50 all on the
line behind it I'd rather be going right
next to these lines so I know where
they're at rather than trying to cross
perpendicular to the line but it's
working out pretty well we did have one
little hiccup and got a little close on
one and it hit our sail drive but it
freed itself just one snuck up on me
just hard to see them in the Sun look at
this
[Music]
besides that we're about 13 miles from
the mouth of the Columbia we should hit
that around a three o'clock comes
another one been like this the whole way
I'm gonna sleep well tonight
[Music]
so we've been trying to sail from bar to
bar and I think that we've been doing
pretty good because we are about eight
nautical miles just north of the mouth
of the Columbia River and it's supposed
to be perfect because it's going to be
slack tides so we won't be fighting the
currents getting in there
fingers crossed though because when the
currents coming out you'd be kind of
fighting like a three to four knots in
your face so no fun and that means we
have to motor in we'd like to sail in if
we could but you know can't have
everything other than that so this has
been a pretty spectacular day
Emma's been learning how to watch for
crab pots
and she's just enjoying herself I think
we're gonna really get used
Emma's a great little watch girl I think
she takes to the ceiling quite naturally
[Music]
so we are now entering the mouth of the
Columbia River I don't know the video
will actually be able to portray or let
you see these big swells that are coming
in and we're writing them everything
flattened out just perfectly and we
timed it so then we're going in at the
right time a lot of times if you don't
plan it right here
I mean it's catastrophic there's been so
many lives that have been lost by
entering it at the wrong time so timing
is everything guys this is a pretty
spectacular
I don't know when the next time we'll be
back here but I'm just so grateful that
Emma gets to experience this and it was
such a great passage the Columbia River
Bar is one of the world's most dangerous
entrances to a major commercial waterway
this is where the forest of 265 thousand
cubic feet of water per second from the
Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean
conditions from the bar are extremely
dynamic and can change hourly with the
ability to generate huge waves it takes
great planning to ensure that you cross
the bar at the right time
and it looks like the crew as we basic
did just that ah could not ask for
better conditions going across the
Columbia bar Columbia River Bar could be
ugly
one of the worst bars in the world but
look at this we timed it weathers great
Emma's at the helm took it over the bar
okay we're inside heading towards Ile
wakow tonight the long narrow channel
right around this jetty here we should
be in and about that's about an hour
hour and a half we're still about
about two miles from a wacko but the
first obstacle to the channel is making
it through this these winged walls here
[Music]
we're just now entering the waka Marina
and it's time to call it a day starting
to get really cold and we'll be in soon
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]

[Music]
[Music]
okay here we are tucked in for the night
it's a good day feel good about it
you know we thought about just spending
one night here and heading off to the
next destination but it's a cute little
seaside town looks like it's heavy into
commercial fishing just like most of the
towns we've been seeing on the coast
here so we might stick around here for a
couple days
we'll see weather's nice right now
though so it's itching to go south but
we're not in a race and we got to get
caught up on some things like EMA
schoolwork and videos and just life so
we may be here for just a few days
before we head on over to Warrenton
pretty big facility here about 800 slips
mostly commercial and looking around
it's a pretty small town but it's worth
the stop you know coming in coming in
through the entry here looking out a
chart it's a long narrow channel
probably about two nautical miles long
and it branches off the Columbia River
and it looks intimidating if you're
looking at a chart but once you're in
it's well well marked and real obvious
where to go
it's probably I'd say 50 to 75 feet wide
most of the channel and not much room
for error
I would assume a lot of boats end up in
the sand coming in here not us went
pretty smooth
so we'll hunker down for the night I'll
have to check in with the marina in the
morning they're closed already but we're
in a nice safe spot so have some dinner
then just relax
[Music]
