welcome back to onboard lifestyle
well we spent a couple days here in
charleston oregon
[Music]
view has been spectacular the weather's
been perfect
life's not so bad for us right now we
had amazing seafood while we're here
but it's time to go weather's looking
good
for us to head out tomorrow and it's
about
100 nautical miles to brookings oregon
that's where we'll be next but we're
going to try to break it into two
segments 50 miles to port orford
and then 50 miles from port orford to
brookings
port orford is a roadstead anchorage but
it gives you uh
nice protection if the winds are out of
the north or northwest
looks like we should have favorable
conditions to uh
attempt that so i think that's our plan
should be a lot of fun we haven't been
there before
sun's just setting here in charleston
and
conditions are just calm and perfect for
us
so we'll get up first thing tomorrow
morning and head out
okay bright and early still a little bit
of fog out here
but about a ten hour eight to ten hour
run
winds stowing the fenders
emma's chilling down below still
[Music]
looks pretty calm so far
seas are flat so we should have a good
little run
just hope for some wind
[Music]
okay we're heading across the bar
[Music]
it's a little bit lumpy but everything
should
flatten out when we start heading south
[Music]
so once we got across the bar
things just started to lay down it's
nice out here
sun's out seas are flat a little bit of
wind enough
we could fly some sails and start
drifting down the coast it's not a big
day today
50 miles so we're not in a big hurry
winds are supposed to pick up a little
bit more this afternoon
and we'll pick up our pace we're still
doing
five knots can't complain about that
just enjoy the weather and this sea
state
you know we're gonna be heading around
cape blanco here
in about 20 miles actually you can see
it way off in the distance that's
notorious
uh foul weather area between cape blanco
cape mendocino
a lot of people get beat up in this area
of the pacific northwest
in fact we had a boat uh tesoro
that was uh behind us back in uh
charleston this you know they came in
last week
they said they were seeing 40 and 50
knot winds through there
and frankly they said it was a pretty uh
scary
we picked a little bit better day it
looks like
so let's keep drifting down the coast
we usually like to leave pretty early in
the morning so
when that happens emma does not come out
with us
at the beginning of the passage because
well she really hasn't
found her singing legs just yet it takes
about
a good couple hours before she's good
and you know it works for us because
she's inside
with compass and it allows us to be able
to concentrate
on uh plotting out our route and she
does
start showing up this is like the
perfect spot i have all my devices
my book and i can see the perfect view
out the window
it's pretty comfy life's not too hard on
this kid
ideal condition still
cape blanco it's a bunch of uh
exposed rock that juts out probably
about two three miles off the point here
we're gonna swing wide around that into
port orford
you know i've been through here a dozen
times by sailboat
this is by far the nicest
this stretch of the pacific northwest
can kick your ass
not today i probably shouldn't say that
so loud
things could turn quick here but
just beautiful beautiful conditions
well this is how fast the weather turns
coming around these caves
you know we were in just this nice
little breeze
you know probably five to ten nods just
drifting along
and it picked up the white caps and
streaks on the water in about 10 minutes
as we're coming around the cape here
it's blowing 15 to 20. we just have the
jib flying now
and we're clipping along at the six and
a half knots
[Music]
we'll be rounding there's two big banks
of rocks to go around here
there's the right off here is the
cape blanco reef and the port orford
reef
there's one big rock way out here
that will round it's fox rock
[Music]
after we get around that we'll be
looking for anchorage for the night
but i can't complain this is beautiful
out here seas are still flat we got lots
of wind
and tons of speed just on a jib only
well we've made our turn around the
orford reef
and we're uh
heading into an anchorage for tonight
emma's at the helm and we're still
scooting along pretty good here
we are approaching port orford we're
about
two and a half nautical miles out and
the wind is picking up
believe it or not we're actually going
upwind right now almost right
we're going more upwind than downwind
and we're still
doing about 6.2 knots
just with the jib this is awesome
it's kind of cold
[Music]
it's been a pleasant sale and i can't
wait to drop anchor
okay here we are tucked into port orford
nick of time he's blowing 25 now
[Music]
got a good nice bite with the anchor
we're in 25 feet of water i put out 150
feet of chain
we've got an anchor watch system going
we haven't buzzed
in the last 20 minutes i feel pretty
good because
even if we do start to move we've got
four miles before land so we'll have
plenty of
time to react but i feel good
got a good bite hopefully this wind will
die down a little bit later today
and then tomorrow will be just a
straight run south
okay it's 5 30 in the morning we're just
getting ready to
pull the anchor it's a real interesting
fishing village all the fishing boats
are on this wharf over here and they
have to launch them by crane every
morning
the end of the night when they get back
they have to pick them back up
there's a whole fleet up there looks
like about i don't know 15
boats or so anyway we slept well the
wind died off to about
10 to 15 overnight it's time to head
south
[Music]
anchors up let's keep going
[Music]
well we had a nice start to the day sea
state is flat again
that's gonna be short-lived though
today's the last calm day out here
supposed to be blowing 30 to 55
for the next five days so we're taking
this opportunity to
make as much ground up as we can and get
into brookings
we left early this morning and it's just
been flat and nice out here
unfortunately not much wind we're
supposed to be blowing 12 to 15 out here
but we're not seeing it so it's a motor
sail today
just we have to get tucked in before
that gale heads
beautiful beautiful landscape as we come
down the oregon coast just
amazing rock formations i mean it's so
nice out here
the girls are up forward and compass
we're just whale watches there's so much
sea life right now i know i think we've
seen like three parts
not a bad place to hang out our sales
just for just for show today
maybe we'll see a little win for the
second half of the trip i'm sure we will
but then it will be quite a bit of wind
but we just got to keep making way and
get into brookings before the
the big winds pick up
so
okay we're getting close we're about 10
miles out of the chetco river
it's a downwind run right now winds
picked up a little bit
we're doing about six knots
[Music]
that's what six and a half knots look
like
with nothing else but our little jib
just left it out here mainsail's down
we're just clipping along at a good pace
this is chetco point our first
buoy is dead ahead about a mile ahead of
us we'll round that
and enter the chetco river into
brookings
should be in there within i think half
hour 40 minutes
[Music]
[Music]
okay here we are made it into
the chetco river
this is brookings oregon it's pretty
blustery out there
when we entered but the second you make
it in
to the river system it just calms right
down
amazing protection in here this will be
our home for the next couple days looks
like there's some
pretty beefy weather just south of us so
we'll be watching that closely
and we'll make a decision in the next
few days on
our next stop next stop is not too far
away it's just uh
probably 20 miles south of here crescent
city but while we're here
and we're watching for weather we might
as well explore and have some fun
well this our home for tonight we'll get
some rest we had a good
couple of days it's time to relax
[Music]
okay so something really unexpected
happened to us last night
while we were anchored in port orfer we
were just kind of relaxing at that point
so obviously cameras were not rolling
but we have to share this with you so
what we've decided to do
is do a reenactment
[Music]
crash crash
what was that crash i don't know
what was that crash go
check i will
emma emma was that crash you
no i thought it was you
maybe it was in your old stateroom
nothing here i'm confused
it must be outside you're right it must
be outside
i will check
what
[Music]
a drone
[Music]
you guys you guys look
a drone a drone
a drone
okay all kidding aside this was kind of
fun
and unexpected for us because never we
would have imagined
that a drone would come out and visit us
when we're the only one in the anchorage
and we're about half a mile from
from shore and the wind was blowing
pretty brisk at the time this blowing 20
plus maybe 25 so i was shocked that this
tiny little drone made it that far out
there the little ones
normally do anyway
when it hit the deck it blew apart the
battery popped out so i grabbed the
pieces came back inside
and i figured you know we could
find the owner online somehow i looked
on shore didn't see anybody
but there's an faa number on here i
thought it'd be easy to look it up
on the faa website and do a reverse
search but they don't allow me to do a
reverse search
i try to other couple avenues couldn't
find the owner to this drone
so if you are the owner of this drone
shoot us an email we do know what you
look like because we
were able to recover some of the footage
on the sd card
yes um so we got a couple glimpses so
don't be
emailing us saying it's you and it's not
so that's right
we have no problems returning either
tell us your faa number or send us a
picture of yourself
and you know we were able to re-render
the some of the lost footage on this
and got a good picture of us at anchor
we'll uh
show you that right now but please
contact us so we get this mail back to
you
we will soon be doing our own drone shop
now that we're out of
a lot of military areas so looking
forward to that as well
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
