well it's the next morning
it's nice and calm in this anchorage
china camp is uh
an interesting place we have yet to go
to shore to explore
you know we were anchored out there in
the middle of the night
we made the decision to to move in it
just was not laying down
it was lumpy hitting us on our beam and
it was very uncomfortable
as soon as we moved in we got out of
that current
and the majority of the wind but the
downside is
this is a very shallow bay you know here
we are a couple hundred feet
off of shore right now and at high tide
we're sitting in nine feet of water
at low tide about five feet
so it's just uh not much distance
between our
rudders and the muddy bottom
but luckily it's it was a calm evening
you know
everything laid down about midnight one
o'clock and we slept well
well the girls are going to go to shore
this morning
i'll shuttle them in and i'll come back
and stick with the boat the winds have
just been real unpredictable here
i just don't feel safe leaving the boat
without somebody on board
so let's get them into shore and they'll
go exploring
okay you girls have fun
[Music]
this has been a really good hike right
emma it's so beautiful
and we actually saw a bunch of deer that
was awesome it was pretty cool they
weren't really scared of us
but you know we kept our distance yeah
this camp
actually has a lot of memories for teal
and i
because gosh i don't want to say how
long it was but
years ago when teal and i were on the
hunt for our first boat
we took a long weekend and drove from
washington
down here because there was a
sailboat that we wanted to look at but
it happened to be
a holiday weekend so there was
absolutely zero hotel rooms available
for us
and plus we were young and we were
pretty broke so
we were driving around kind of figuring
out where we're gonna stay for the night
because we couldn't see the boat until
the next day and we
happened upon this campsite and uh the
whole place was packed
so the guy ended up taking pity on us
and told us that we can sneak in for the
night
i think it was like 10 bucks and uh
yeah so we camped here and then the next
day we found our first boat
so awesome place
yeah brings back a lot of great memories
[Music]
china camp state park is a state park of
california
known for its hiking mountain biking
trails
and scenic views aside from that it has
a rich history
after the gold rush and the completion
of the transcontinental railroad
demand for chinese laborers abated the
chinese had to find other work
this land was leased to chinese shrimp
fishermen most of these fishermen had
come from canton in the maritime
province of kuantang china
by the early 1880s china camp was one of
the many
coastal fishing villages in the bay area
with nearly 500 residents
san pablo bay's mud flats provided an
ideal
grass shrimping location nearly 3
million pounds of shrimp were caught
each year
dried and exported to china despite its
successes
china camp's population began to decline
after the chinese exclusion act of 1882
which forbade
new chinese laborers to come to the u.s
[Music]
we just spent our last night at anchor
here at china camp it was our third
night here
we wanted to stay here a few days so we
could explore
but this anchorage
it's beautiful beautiful views girls had
a great time on their walk
[Music]
but the current versus the wind as the
tides come in the current goes one
direction then they turn and reverse and
go the other direction
and the winds do that same thing every
morning the winds will come
out of the southwest and in the evenings
out of the northwest so you're doing
this dance at anchor
all night long and it's just an
uncomfortable feeling and the winds
picked up a few times so we got some
heavy fetch in here
it's a real kind of muddy bottom and
all the good spots are crowded with all
derelict vessels there's nobody on any
of these boats
so it puts us out at the outskirts of
this anchorage so i'm gonna give this
anchorage
a two out of ten it's just
it just wasn't real comfortable for us
last night was the best of the three
nights
but it's time to go wind's supposed to
pick up here
in the bay tonight and i don't want to
be here and have another one of those uh
events where we have two foot fetch
hitting us on our beam for
five hours so we're gonna sail across
the san pablo bay it's about a 10 mile
sail just across the bay
over to the san joaquin sacramento river
entrance and we'll head up
into the river system and try to find a
nice little anchorage for tonight
so it should be good sail nice light
breeze right now
calm conditions and the sun's out
it's so peaceful when we get to sail off
the anchor
there's not much wind right now but it's
still pretty cool
it is you got it under control
under control yeah i'm hanging on all
right because i think i'm going to go
make breakfast for everybody that sounds
wonderful hang on tight
i am these are picking up here yeah
got the one inch waves right now
well my morning just got a little better
i could smell
what do i smell in there
so peaceful just a quiet leisurely sale
lin's in cooking breakfast
and we're just still drifting along no
complaints it's uh
it's a beautiful day
wind's picking up a little bit and the
current's slowing down a little bit so
we're still holding
pretty steady no rush
we can see the bridge already
there's your breakfast
thank you you're welcome
[Music]
well we're making way slowly just
drifting across
san pablo bay it's 10 miles across
it's weird to think though that the
majority of this
bay is 10 feet or less at low tide
it's a very shallow bay we're sticking
close to the
channel just to get a little depth
[Music]
but you got to be careful there's a lot
of big
ships coming in in and out all day long
here
believe it or not these ships
they head all the way up to stockton
from here
up the san joaquin river
it's amazing anyway luckily we're
running with the tide there's just
barely a breeze
just enough to keep our sails full and
keep our heading true
we're still making three knots we're in
no hurry
it's early morning when there is no wind
but we're enjoying it
it's just peaceful
[Music]
okay so as we started coming up the
sacramento and san joaquin river system
the temperature started rising we were
in the 70s
out on san pablo bay up into the upper
90s in here
it was a drastic temperature change and
worst of all
the smoke is getting thicker and thicker
as we come up in here there's a new
wildfire not too far from here
that is uh blowing right right to our
location
and it's amazing how much it's affected
us just in the last few hours yeah it's
really
bad i mean you can the air quality is
really bad
you can see the the haze the smoke and
we're actually seeing it come down
on our decks so it's um it's time to
yeah we've dropped the hook here in
benicia
we're gonna lock up the boat try to get
inside and uh keep the smoke out of the
cabin
but it's awful warm out so it'll be uh
it'll be difficult
we have a lot of ash already raining
down on us so it'll be nice
uh we're gonna try to get into a marina
for the next day or two because
we need to wash this off it's not good
for your paint not good for the paint
and
we have we you know we've been
discussing as a family what we want to
do over the next
couple of months with this current world
environment
and these i mean the pandemic the
wildfires
everything just it's just we've had an
awesome 2020. it hasn't
you know what though we'll remember this
forever i know but it's time for us to
figure out do we travel south do we go
up in the delta
do we kind of hang tight and get our
projects done i mean this is actually a
great opportunity for us to
tackle some of the big projects that we
were holding off and trying to travel at
the same time
with basically the world kind of slowing
down with travel restrictions
i think that this is perfect for us and
it's i think so as well
and uh so what we're going to do is
concentrate on
getting this boat dialed in build the
hard top
do some of the other big projects that
we need to do to make this boat
comfortable for world travel
and hopefully things simmer down in the
next few months
and we could get on with our journey but
for now
i think i don't smell smoke i smell a
hard top in my future
you know i still smell smoke but maybe a
washdown
oh there's a the list is endless and
we'll go over that
but right now it's let's get into a
marina because there's a lot of
logistics for us to handle
yeah lynn's going to be on the phone
trying to find uh
supplies supplies and marinas and where
are we gonna go
yeah over the next few days we're gonna
figure all this out
and if it's possible i think it needs to
happen
i think it will happen we just have to
we just have to work hard and get it
and get it done
[Music]
it was really nice to be on a dock again
after being on the hook for almost two
weeks
my mom and i took full advantage of the
dark water
and scrub basic top to bottom it was
lots of work
but basically was really dirty
[Music]
we also took compass on lots of walks
for some exercise
and he was really happy after that
drop ahead
go away the best part of being in the
delta
is that the water is so much warmer so
i'm taking full advantage of that
classic emma goblin cannonball
perfect
dropped off the keys we are all set
and ready to head back out again we came
here
the other night and it was just kind of
nice to
be on a dock to be able to drop off
garbage
pick up some supplies fill up with fresh
water
and make those calls i feel pretty good
that we are ready to head back out again
for probably another week and then at
that point it's the big move
to napa marina teal
is kind of just getting everything
prepared
i already made a ton of food so that we
can just relax at anchor
gonna be spending a about a week in the
san joaquin
um delta system so that'll be kind of
fun
it's been a while
[Music]
we all set and ready to go about 10
minutes we will
i'm kind of excited i know this would be
good been a while since we've been in
the san joaquin
delta system i know i'm thinking of
exploring uh grizzly bay today
i want i want you guys to do some
fishing oh for sure
