On this week's episode of Onboard Lifestyle we start the final phase of our hardtop installation o our 435 catamaran SV basik. This project has been a long haul but we can clearly see the end in sight. We are so close and could not be more proud of our progress. Come back next week to see what we are up too...see you then!

previously on onboard lifestyle
we reached a major milestone after
countless hours on our hardtop
we recruited ruth and garrett to help us
hoist our project into position
and everything went smooth as the
hardtop slid right into place
from idea to design sketches to
construction
it's so exciting to watch our project
come together
this is the first glimpse for us seeing
the hard top in position and can i say
we are so proud
teal you have a problem i know
you've been staring at those things
since yesterday
it's a process the process is you stare
at the hard top you stare at the seam
you stare at the post
you just stare it's how i work things
through you know that
it's too much let's let's just get going
what else do we need to do
well first thing we need to do
you see the steering's working i'm
starting to work this out
first thing we need to do before the
post go in
we need to position this in the exact
spot and to do that we need to notch it
into the coach roof
but to notch it into the coat roof we
have to remove some deck hardware
that starboard winch is going to be a
little close
you know we're going to be doing a lot
of sanding we're going to be doing
fairing and epoxy work and glass work
i just want to make sure it it's out of
the way and we're not that much
epoxy work there's going to be quite a
bit up there you'll see
next thing we need to do though is once
that deck hardware is removed
we'll make a big notch into the coach
and that notch is important for a few
reasons
it's gonna push the hardtop forward
one inch and by doing that it gives us a
little more clearance
on our main traveler it's going to give
us a little more
clearance for the solar panels but more
importantly it's going to give us fresh
core in the
coach roof to laminate to and by making
this
notch the hard top will be locked in for
any lateral movement
so that's the first thing we need to do
well that seems simple enough we can do
that this morning
what about the posts they're next
[Music]
perfect two and a quarter two and a
quarter everything's
lining right up
so are you satisfied then so far
so far this is uh
lining right up according to your
calculations recording
according to my calculations
okay you ready what's next next is now
that i have this
pushed into position i had to sink it in
this one inch to lock it in get some
fresh core
to be epoxying to it lines up
everything on the back gives us a little
more clearance off the traveler
and now we throw a couple posts in you
ready for that
i'm always ready to post up
okay let's post up
so let's get the center posts in you
know we may not need
any more posts this thing's feeling so
solid
you know we at one point i was thinking
we needed multiple posts
but i'm thinking we just put these first
two in
and let's walk on this and see how it
feels
all right i uh suggest
that you moonwalk across
i'll do the worm if it
no no nobody wants to see the worm no
more nobody wants to see when you do
that i want to answer a hundred more
comments
okay exciting let's go i know you look
really happy
i am happy
post up post up
tickle hidden not much
[Music]
perfect no
i need to go this way okay yep
okay go ahead
a little bit more touch more
[Music]
[Music]
i have my marks now that's where i'll be
drilling through
got the vacuum on standby don't want to
make too much of a mess
got all my tools all my hardware is
lined up
butyl tape and i even have
all my backer plates actually made these
the other day
[Music]
this thing's intimidating
anytime you have a two foot handle on
something makes you think
i guarantee you there's a million horror
stories about this spamming tool
[Music]
um
you know it doesn't bother me when teal
drills holes through our boat because he
does it so often
what bothers me is when i've made the
bed everything is nice and clean
and then he decides it's time to drill
through the stateroom
so look at me okay you all set down
there
okay i'm gonna drill an eighth inch
pilot hole first
uh pretty close okay here's the next one
and then the last one
okay you see those three now right yeah
now i'm gonna come through with a
quarter inch bit
okay here's the next one that was pretty
damn close
okay you ready for the first one of
course i am i'm always ready
okay butyl's down feels good
you got your wrench right i'm ready okay
i've got it backwards yeah
yep
okay go down
go up okay down
okay i think that's it
tighten it up
comes in handy shortcuts
yeah i feel pretty good been drilling
out these posts
and i've been hitting my internal
backing it's solid
pvc going through here there's one there
just drilled out all three of these
solid backing
all the way across so layout worked
glad i kept my notes
we have a very busy day today because
the weather is cooperating and we have
to take full
advantage teal is down below right now
cutting out the plastic core
and he has given me the template because
he wants me to be up here
cutting um 32 pieces of this out of the
core mat so we're going to sandwich the
core mat between the plastic component
and then this is going to be biscuited
in with sticking epoxy
to our main cabin so i got a lot of work
to do
compass it's funny when i uh
when i mapped this out when i tried to
figure out how i should draw this all
out i realized that
this is a tessellation so all the shapes
fit together
fun fact a tessellation of a flat
surface is the covering of a plane using
one or more geometric shapes
called tiles with no overlaps and no
gaps
in mathematics tessellations can be
generalized to higher dimensions and a
variety of geometries
like this that's pretty cool
i'm starting my layout for these
biscuits
coming across this hard top there's
going to be a total of eight biscuits
i think i'm gonna put in four or five
today because
planting this coach roof out with the
hard top
i have to kind of twist and torque
things to get it the exact plane
i need to be within a 16th top and
bottom so i don't have a lip here
so i've laid these out and we'll get
going on these
i'm going to just dish this material out
using
a vibratory saw and
these should just layer right down in
there we're going to use the pvc
biscuits
along with coremat probably get two
layers of cormat
put the pvc biscuit down another two
layers of cormat i think that'll plane
out
real close to our finished product after
that's done
then we can start layering glass cloth
over this but i really want to get some
strength
to keep this top from ever moving
[Music]
well we're all set for the first
laminations here
i've got my core mat lined up my pvc
biscuits
everything's all dished out
this is our hard top and our coach roof
there was a little bit of da vinci cell
that was in here
but i knew there was damage taken to the
boat at one point i heard that there was
a problem with the mast
i'm assuming that some damage happened
in the deck and it was replaced with a
da vinci cell here
but it goes right back to knight decor
over here
and everything's just looking good gonna
be exciting
start lacing this together
okay i'm starting to layer the cormat
into the slots here i put thickened
epoxy
to fill all the exposed cells
we're going to build up the thickness
with cormat and pvc biscuits
okay this is the last layer of format
now i'm just trying to get these all
saturated up
this is going to be uh enough strength
what i'll do now
is clean up this surface then tomorrow i
can fare this out with some thickened
epoxy before we start
laminating uh layers of glass over this
but i'm happy that so far everything's
just uh lining right up
okay just spent the last few hours
dishing out these
last four biscuits
[Music]
saturated with thickened epoxy we're
putting in our core mat
the other biscuits cured overnight so i
was able to torque this top
right down into place it's gonna be so
solid
that's the idea
just one layer at a time
[Music]
my that's really fancy epoxy mixing
there
well i got the best girl on it
shoot my own horn there did you remember
the hardener
maybe cares
okay i'll need five more pumps and
another round of
oh format core matt thank you
sorry my mind is busy
[Music]
[Music]
i'm just hanging out doing some quality
control
i would say that's strong
layers of these biscuits
and cornmats and cormac
and another round of
coremat thank you
