In this week's episode of Onboard Lifestyle we enjoy life in Monterey, California both at anchor and in the marina. This was a planned stop to give Emma the opportunity to experience the Monterey Bay Aquarium and it did not disappoint. This area is rich in history and we wish we could have stayed longer, but the seas beckons us back with good weather. Come back next week as we journey further South to San Simeon...see you then!

week in pillar point the crew decided it

was time to move on out of the fog to

our next stop south we drop the hook in

santa cruz just as the sun peeks out and

spend a few days exploring the local

attractions

this is the perfect end to the perfect

day i know it's so nice up here

it's now time for our next destination

it was a fun non-eventful sale to

monterey

i missed it

i missed it

i missed it but we were happy to sail

the entire way

now that we set the hook it's time to

explore what monterey has to offer

found what we're looking for in life

what are you looking forward to seeing

while we're here uh i'm looking forward

to the aquarium and taking compass for a

walk

i think we had a nice smooth landing

teal and emma are just securing the

lines

making sure we're all properly

tied up okay there we go

and look at this the sun came out

it is nice let's get settled in i like

it you know what i'm excited about

i know watching the boat right yes it's

been almost a month i feel all this

salt look at that i cleaned the deck so

what are you talking about look at that

no

there we go let's get it all polished up

i think he's excited for his walk

now that we're in it's time to go

check in with the harbour master they

were so nice we called them this morning

and asked if they had a slip available

and they were accommodating we got a

really nice one right up front i know i

love it and this place looks really nice

i don't think i need a jacket i know the

sun's coming out

that's one thing nice about pulling into

a marina you get rid of your garbage

i've been lugging this one around for a

couple of weeks now and i get to wash

the boat wash the boat

fill up with water there's a lot of

history here too so i'm excited to

explore yeah it looks

looks pretty cool so far emma ray

disappeared with compass emma has been

looking forward to walking compass for

so long because we just haven't been

able to get him on land

but they're off somewhere now

that's good for him get some exercise i

don't know if compass is walking emma or

emma's walking compass i think it's a

little bit of both

okay let's go check in

lynn was itching to scrub the top side

now she's anxious to get in and look at

the bottom side oh man

it's cold

well

just jump in swim around a little bit

and uh

if i need to jump in i'll jump in with

how's it looking

not enough for dinner though

today's excursion day and while we're in

monterey we had to visit their amazing

aquarium here it's one of the best in

the country so that's what we're doing

monterey bay is known as the serengeti

of the sea and is home to an abundance

of amazing sea life from 34 species of

marine mammals to 180 species of

seabirds and shorebirds not to mention

the over 525 different species of fish

invertebrate and algae

even though we saw an abundant amount of

sea life and critters right here in the

marina

what's up little fella

we cannot pass up the opportunity to

visit the famous monterey bay aquarium

the monterey bay aquarium was founded in

1984.

perch seaside with breathtaking views it

has over 200 world-class exhibits and

over 80 thousand plants and animals the

monterey bay aquarium is an amazing

window into the ocean's wonders

nothing like cafeteria food

the exhibits are just a portion of what

they do their scientists are working

hard to protect not just california's

ocean but are moving the needle onto

legislation to address climate change

and pollution worldwide

their team is also rebuilding sea otter

populations and transforming aquaculture

and fishing practices to make seafood

more sustainable for the global

marketplace

that was fun

that was so cool i could stay here all

day i think we did

it's a beautiful day here in monterey so

we're gonna walk around to see what we

can find and as you can see

lynn is in a sling because she was

wrestling one of those sea lions last

night obviously i don't know what

happened i think it was because i

overdid it when we're cleaning the boat

or something but my my shoulder hurts so

much so we're just gonna immobilize it

and hopefully the pain goes away and

we'll see what happens if not we might

have to take a trip to the doctors we'll

see okay

let's go see this town

this area is rich in history and i was

excited to learn as much as i could

while we were here

founded in 1770 monterey functioned as

the capital of alta california under

spanish rule from 1804 to 1821 and

mexican rule from 1822 to 1836

during this period it was the only port

of entry for taxable goods in california

in 1846

the u.s flag was raised over the customs

house after mexico ceded california to

the u.s

so it looks like we picked an

interesting week to be here in monterey

they're having this classic car and

exotic car looks like shows and auctions

supposed to be the place the place to be

the best cars out there they fly them in

from all over the world we're on the

hunt for jay leno right now i'm sure

he's here somewhere

got my eye open

we'll see if we can strike up a

conversation

i'm sure he'd be glad to talk to us

right

of course

okay i get to relax now teal and emma

are heading over to the fuel dock to

grab just a couple gallons of diesel

most of it is for our heating system so

i'm hoping that they don't have to use

it but just in case i like to stay warm

we haven't gotten fuel in a while so

we're gonna because we're leaving a

little bit we're gonna head over to the

field dock and get a few gallons

this is ten

and my arm is out of the sling right now

after doing some research and hearing

from some of our patrons um and

mobilizing it is probably not the

smartest thing maybe i have a frozen

shoulder who knows it's sore but i'm

trying to gingerly just kind of work it

we got everything we need right here i

am my dad is just up there paying for

everything and we're gonna head back

okay we're all set fueled up let's go

look at all the fuel we got i know

that's got to get us the next couple

hundred miles down the coast yep mostly

for heat

we're leaving tomorrow

and

i'm

i'm so excited because it just means

we're getting

further south

and

just more exploring we're going to be at

anchor at the next stop a few

the next few stops actually

and uh i'm looking forward to it

our time here in monterey has been

absolutely amazing our first time here

um wasn't that

it wasn't the best

uh just because it was really rolly um

out at the anchorage and

we were on a tight schedule to head

south but this time we got to spend

some time at the anchorage and sometime

in the marina and

it's just been great the weather's been

nice that people have been the people

have been raised

and

yeah i'm gonna miss it

did you get your field yep

how many gallons

10 whole gallons ten whole gallons

that's not bad

you're showing your age to you i'm sore

why it's all about walking no you guys

did a little running yesterday

okay guys

this is it this is it god you're so

dramatic comment i'll miss this place i

know it's been a really fun place to

stay

and explore and visit i know it's so

awesome here my favorite part about this

whole area was

the people i guess i say that a lot but

man we met some nice people here

we sure did when we wake

up

us crazy but things are finally right

with you and i the future is

so we left the marina this morning

and

our thought is we don't want to just

head straight out

because it's about a 90 nautical mile

trip to san simeon that would put us

at anchor in the middle of the night

so we came out to the general anchorage

it was a big trip but about 0.8 nautical

miles

we were all kind of beat up from the

20-minute journey

but here we are

enjoying the last little bit of sunshine

looks like there might be a little bit

of fog in our near future because we're

going to pick up uh the anchor and leave

in about a half an hour that'll time us

out to pull into san simeon

first daybreak

and i have to say before we head out of

here how amazing our time was here in

monterey and i think that brian who is

in charge of harbor operations of the

marina

he just made our trip here our time here

extra special he was so welcoming he

actually

lent us his car his personal car to run

around and see any attractions that we

wanted to i gave groceries and we had a

great dinner with him and his wife mary

jo and their granddaughter

yeah monterey has been one of my

absolute favorite areas this is just an

awesome area so you enjoyed it yeah

okay so here we go t-minus well 29

minutes we're heading south you guys

ready i am it's gonna be a fun overnight

it is our first overnight in a while so

i'm looking forward to it it's gonna be

me i know

lynn is the lin's the overnight person

she she loves the night watches i don't

know she loves them but she's much

better at it than the rest of us so
