previously on onboard lifestyle we
worked on our autopilot while we were in
alamino's bay and it kicked my dad's
butt i've got it to this point right
here it's not working
with all of the electrical connection
complete we were able to fire the unit
up it turns on
okay it's on hold on
hold on it's on it's on
compass needed a routine checkup and get
his shots up to date before leaving the
country we purchased backup ground
tackle and get it set up for a quick
deployment
okay i like it
the crew has a nice sail from alameda's
bay to avalon on catalina island where
we pick up our mooring ball with amazing
views
[Music]
too excited for his walk
and here's a little gift for you emma oh
thank you okay lynn's gonna try to start
the new outboard
okay you feel strong hang on are you all
set yes
everything
your those clothes you're closer
compass is all worked up
okay go yeah you're in reverse
neutral
and forward keep the rpms down when you
go shift into forward
but you got it
i don't care what anybody says i like it
with my right hand
oh
so captain
yep let's go did the pilot do okay
i mean look
they're both still floating hey hey now
that was a hard pull
well here we are avalon harbor
we missed it on that first trip
but we we're hitting it on come back
we had to you got to experience this
it's a it's a little touristy look at
this cruise ships out here
but it looks like it looks like we're in
a hollywood set like a movie set you
know it does it looks unreal here
so it is a great experience and we're
having a good time we're just trying to
stretch our legs and
take a little walk that feels good to
walk doesn't it yeah
i love all the little golf cart stuff
so cool they have so much personality to
every single one of them
after all this time i finally get to
hang out with some cruising kids in
avalon
it seems we all kind of understand each
other and our awesome life so there's no
weirdness when we meet it was really fun
to hang out with my new friends and be
goofy
[Music]
you like doing that randomly
oh hello what are you guys playing
we're playing minecraft
was that minecraft it was minecraft
whoa it's minecraft
wow
we first went snorkeling in the cold
waters at casino point with danica and
addie
i did the sip and paint with coco on
basic and pet putt golf with the crew of
simplicity cars two on this
oh man
we are all heading to mexico so i'm
really excited to meet up with all of
them again at future stops
[Music]
life is a winding road
no telling where it goes
through days and nights
won't stop for traffic lights
[Music]
okay we're gonna drop our
mooring system here in avalon
you know basically you have a forward
and a rear houser
and they're connected by a spreader line
we're gonna drop the aft houser first
these lines are weighted with lead
weights so it sinks to the ground so
it's important to make sure your engines
are in neutral while you're sinking this
all the way down as soon as it's clear
then you could start control of your
vessel
there's quite a bit of pressure on this
so this is going to go pretty
pretty quick
then i'm gonna run forward
okay there it goes it's gonna sink down
i'm going forward
[Music]
we're going to drop this
at the same time i drop this
this is the pickup stick
and the ford houser
okay lynn
reverse
reverse hard
perfect
okay reverse over there
okay we have drop okay neutral
[Music]
my hand signals are pretty simple
whichever corner of the boat i'm
pointing at
lens
controlling the engines
[Music]
and we're clear the mooring
we'll just get out of the mooring field
there's not much wind in this harbor
right now we'll be probably a mile or
two offshore before we set sails
okay we're clear
standing underneath the lights
look into each other's eyes
tired snowflakes are coming down
collapse into water when they hit the
ground
i hear the sound of empty streets
yesterday
so all that's left is
close your eyes
[Music]
okay the sun's just
peeking out right as we get to dana
point harbor
here's the entrance here
we'll be in uh shortly we're actually
not tying up to a dock we're going to be
anchoring in here
and we'll be here for a couple days just
taking care of a little business
our plan was to anchor in dana cove for
a few days
but the anchorage was a lot smaller in
person than it appeared on the charts
it was a calm night and basic drifted
around the anchorage setting off the
anchor alarm multiple times because i
had to tighten up the parameters to
accommodate the confined space
so we are now
inside an anchorage in dana point
this was a unplanned stop
but it's a necessary stop so our
original plan was to sail straight from
avalon to ensenada and do one overnight
passage
into mexico
but
um right before we were supposed to go
teal finally confessed he wasn't honest
or he hasn't been honest with us
he has not been feeling great and he's
been feeling really tired and lethargic
and just not himself
so
we made a family decision to head over
here so he can go see a doctor get some
blood work done
so then he can get the okay
and then we can continue on but i'll be
honest this has been really stressful
and i've been really quiet on social
media
and everything else and i apologize for
that but
you know i just need to process this and
just kind of get a grip but i have every
faith that
we'll get an answer and uh
teal will be okay
in the meantime
just trying to enjoy our surroundings we
are going to go into the marina
sometime tomorrow
just so then it's easier for us to get
to and from
the
the hospital i guess or the doctors or
urgent care i don't know we're trying to
figure it out and figure it out
the next morning we moved into the
marina just in time for teal to make his
appointment for his physical and blood
work already feeling much better after
talking to the doctor it was back to
business as usual on board basic after
noticing intermittent coverage we
replaced a connection to the ais antenna
at the masthead
i'm
ready yeah i made the connection
you look teeny
as soon as you let me down
we had a lovely dinner at the dana west
yacht club with some sp basic viewers
that is
huge
go ahead emma
during our short stay we had some
friends stop by to visit that some of
you may recognize
but it was time to prep for our next
stop so we had a few errands to run so
evan and i have decided to uh do a
little excursion
around the marina
and also pick up
some extra field this is probably the
last
marina that we're gonna be in for a
while before we get into mexico and
check in
we're gonna try to take a full advantage
of whatever anchorage is from here
and in between
as we can save a little money
it's been
kind of hard since there's not very many
anchorages around here
we're just picking up 15 gallons last
time we fueled up was
i don't even remember
so it'll be good
you look a little too cool emma too
chill
all right i'm just relaxing
like you usual yes
that was kind of fun to meet those kids
right yeah we've had a bunch of kids in
avalon finally
i can't wait to get to mexico
yeah just a few more days and we'll be
there hopefully those guys will meet up
with us
as well they're a little behind
but it's okay that just means that
there's kids
in your horizons
[Laughter]
that's muscle baby
we are just taking a quick walk before
we head out of here we're still waiting
on teal's blood work but there's no
reason for us not to go a little bit
further south it's really expensive here
and
that just means that we're getting that
much closer to mexico
yeah and i'm feeling much better already
yes both my boys are
feeling much better compasses blood work
came back clear and he's all healthy and
ready to go now we just need uh this guy
to be uh
i'm getting there i feel much better you
know why
this is actually a really nice place it
was an unexpected stop like most of our
stop but
um
yeah it was uh
we met great people yeah we had a good
time yeah but look at this weather you
know we had a little bit of weather
while we're here it's all cleared up a
little lumpy out there from the north
we've had that huge bomb cyclone that
hit it's kicking up waves to the north
of us 30 to 40 footers
but we're getting a little bit of the
remnants but it's every day the the sea
state's dying down this
i swear this year has tried to kick our
butts but
we're gonna kick it right back that's
right today
yesterday it was eight feet at six
seconds
today
five feet at ten seconds much more
comfortable so this is our window to to
scoot on south a little bit further
every little step we're getting closer
one of the things i look forward to
is prepping and making sure
that we are ready to hoist our main god
i love this thing
makes a huge difference for our
performance
even though today's calls for light
winds
i don't know what it means but there's a
smile upon your face
and i see something shimmering in your
eyes
and they say if you want to glimpse the
future you need space
and you said you'll put down your
morning guns
