On this week's episode of Onboard Lifestyle, the crew of SV basik decide to continue pushing further South while waiting for the Captain's lab results. In the meantime, we finish up our autopilot and take in the last stops of California before venturing into Baja Mexico. Come back next week to see if we make it...See you then!

on last week's episode of onboard
lifestyle we spent some time in avalon
on catalina island enjoying the
picturesque scenery emma finally gets
her kid fix and spent some time with
other cruising families
our plan to sail directly to ensenada is
abruptly changed
as i have a bit of a health issue
teal finally confessed he wasn't honest
or he hasn't been honest with us
he has not been feeling great we
redirect to dana point
so i could see a doctor and get some
blood work done
it's business as usual on basic so we
knock out a few projects you look teeny
run some errands and meet up with
friends before heading to the next port
south as we wait for my lab results
all i know
i got lost along the way
fell between the four
pulling stitches
time to
we've been seeing a lot of this since
we've been coming down the coast but at
least now we get to really see it with
blue skies it's like a mega of dolphins
and they're chasing something look at
that
they're coming at us oh man
it's gotta be fish
don't look before you leave
what you give you get to keep
so
[Music]
okay on the approach to oceanside here
there's the big long jetty right there
we actually enter
the harbor uh from the south
we hook it around
gives it nice protection from this
northwest swell
doesn't feel too bad out here today but
it's amazing when you look at shore you
can see the waves breaking up over the
jetty right now
the period is so long it's like 12
seconds apart so
it's kind of irrelevant out here we
don't even feel it
but look at those suckers
they're really
breaking apart
[Music]
i think it's time for me to go
[Music]
time to let go
a big reason i wanted to pop into
oceanside is because we're getting so
close to finishing our autopilot i just
needed one more day
so that's what we did all morning
that pesky little rudder sensor
it's been a nemesis of mine for a while
but i finally got it all figured out the
hardest part was calculating where to
put it and making uh the right risers
and spacers to elevate it to the
position it needed to be to get a
accurate signal back to the autopilot
actually let's go check it out and show
what i was working on
well here it is here's the riser i had
to build
to elevate it up to get a good nice
clean connection here this is adjustable
so i could center this exactly on the
mark
and i've done that
the wire goes up
through a watertight fitting that i put
in the deck
right
here and through another water type
fitting that go through the bulkhead
it's all connected and ready to go now
it's just a little bit of programming
and i think
lynn's going to be tickled to death and
we're going to have an autopilot
this is great news you guys because the
rudder indicator is in which means now
we're going to do the dockside
calibration but this is just um it pales
in comparison because i just got
teal's test results for his blood work
and appears like he is good and is
normal i think that or actually
we know what the culprit was it was um
he we had switched his medication a
couple months back and this guy never uh
let anybody know that that was making
him feel terrible well yes the side
effects i won't go into the details but
my body was rejecting itself
it was no fun but but this is a huge
relief for us i feel so much better so
getting back on the right medication
just
all the symptoms are starting to just
fade away and feel healthy and happy and
we are now
almost two weeks um
switching back to his old medication and
i think that it's
it's working it is working psychosomatic
i'm sure because it takes a little time
but i don't care because the fact that
he is feeling good just makes our entire
crew hey i know i feel good i look good
you do you do
okay i need some help on this so
let's calibrate now that we are on a
roll i think it's time for a celebratory
meal
sounds good for the crew what are we
having
you'll see
[Music]
okay eat up family wow
this is a fish tacos thanks to brad and
chris and elementos bay hey brad and
chris
my name's brad and this is uh chris
chris nice meeting you guys to find
fishermen
jalapeno
[Music]
well we're leaving oceanside
we were here for two nights
got the autopilot finally installed
it'll be a nice little test today we did
our dockside setup now we have the kind
of the real world set up we'll get out
here and calibrate some things and play
around with it and see how the new
autopilot works well it's not new it's
it's newly installed
but looks like a nice calm day
a little too calm
but we gotta keep pushing south
we're gonna make it into
i don't know we haven't decided yet we
have our options for today if we make
good ground we get some wind we may go
all the way to san diego if not
we may stop short at mission bay
we'll see
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
wait for better days to come and carry
us like wind in our sails
[Music]
is
[Music]
it never fails any time
that it calls for a win we don't get win
and today calls for absolutely zero win
and look at this
we're sailing
it is so nice it's only going about
what
five seven
eight to ten knots
wow i thought that was sounding kind of
too good to be true
it's about what eight eight to ten not
to win and we're doing about five seven
bouncing between five and five seven
right
i know we're going in the right
direction
and emma just kind of
come hang out
nice
[Music]
seven years now on this boat and we all
know where we belong just wait
[Music]
wait for our home to show on the horizon
[Music]
there's a home for tonight
mission bay
so calm in here
[Music]
well we just
had a nice quiet evening here in the
mariners basin in uh mission bay
it was uh
really quiet and calm and still
you know there's probably 50 60 other
boats in the anchorage here some on
mooring balls and some at anchor
but there's plenty room
i don't feel like we got too close to
anybody
okay we're only spending the one night
here we are still pushing our way south
we got confirmation uh just a few
minutes ago about our
slip in ensenada can't anchor there so
we had to get a slip we were waiting for
that confirmation so we will stage
ourselves over
outside of san diego today that's our
goal we'll get out of here head around
the corner and drop a hook that'll shave
off two three hours uh tomorrow on our
journey to ensenada
we're just waiting for uh
tide to start rolling out so we could at
least take advantage of another knot or
two of speed on the way out of here
it's about a half an hour
then we have a big huge day
two to three hours that's all it's gonna
take us to get to the next anchorage
and we'll get staged there
so
no rush
just kind of enjoying the the scenery
for a little bit
[Music]
big day today yeah
we're just pulling up anchor in mission
bay and we're heading over to san diego
it's going to be
i don't know 11 nautical miles so
it's gonna take a lot out of us
actually the reason why we're going over
there is we still need to calibrate our
autopilot and it's a great jump off
point to ensenada so tomorrow we're
gonna be in another country
oh i'm so excited it's gonna be great
okay go to the
high side of these you know and shoot
right down the plate right here
[Music]
we are just
to point loma is right here
and
emma and i are on lobster pot duty there
are hundreds of lobster pots all around
us
and kelp so we gotta keep our eyes
peeled for uh for teal
oh so nice
we are so close to mexico i can taste it
at least the tacos anyways
okay okay i got it i got it we were
trying to
sail around this so we got sucked right
into it
so we're just drifting now
look at this
just gonna take our time and drift
through this
there's 100 pots all around us
we'll just get to the other side
and
knock off any debris
we're in
50 feet of water
do you have any steering at all
this way a little bit
yeah
because all these pots are all around us
nothing's caught up on us yet we're just
gonna drift through this looks like we
have another 100 yards or so to go
maybe 200.
what's your depth
38.
i feel like we need to just go this way
hold on
we got one coming real close too
catching us
just don't fall in
i might just swim up and thank you
i know we're going so slow there's like
nowhere here
so emma you know we did we did that on
purpose we just needed some excitement
right
okay no actually we were
following another sailboat
i won't make that mistake again
and uh they got caught up in it real
quick
we tried to turn we had full sails up uh
and just got caught in the edge so we
had to sail our way through
but we made it cleared the props
dropped all the sails now that we made
it through because we're
just
kind of coming up to uh the anchorage
here and we're going to calibrate our
compass for the autopilot
a lot of military activity here
every few minutes you see something
flying by
pretty cool
time to calibrate
how many revolutions are we doing two
and a half revolutions
to starboard
we are
one and three-quarter revolutions in
okay there's
that's two and a half right there it's
over two and a half so what's it doing
okay
all right alive so okay i need to go
into straight line straight line hang on
a second because i can't go to straight
line here
okay so let me get to center
we're at 10
that's about centered hold on let me let
me get a
fixed point
okay i'm at 285 perfect
accept
calibration done whoa
okay
okay here's our home for tonight
for the next few hours
we are actually you can see san diego
off here in the distance
san diego harbor san diego bay all
inside there we're anchored out here
with a looks like about 40 or 50 other
boats
we picked usually we tucked tied up to a
beach getting a little more protected
but we're leaving in a few hours
we're just going to rest here for
about 12 hours
and we're going to leave at three in the
morning for ensenada
our target is
down south
looks like uh
we can actually see
i think that's coronado island
and the point we're going to shoot right
through that gap it's about a 20 mile
gap
but
we'll be doing that in the dark of night
but i feel good got our autopilot going
we have radar now we've got
boy everything's just lining up for this
and we're ready
