On this week's episode of Onboard Lifestyle we start to push northward to Puerto Vallarta because our travel visas are about to expire. The plan is to leave the Barra Lagoon and hop our way up the coast to Bahia Tenacatita then Bahia Chamela. Come back next week as we try to reach PV to make our flight out...see you then!

previously on onboard lifestyle
0:33
we leave baia tanakatita on sail south
0:35
to bara de navidad
0:37
we did our homework and entered the
0:39
lagoon through its narrow unmarked
0:40
channel without incident
0:43
others did not
0:48
the crew enjoys beautiful sunrises and
0:50
delicious french pastries delivered
0:52
right to basic that's pastry creme and
0:54
chocolate cinnamon rolls raisin oil
0:56
chocolate fossil
0:58
and we take a dinghy ride out to see the
0:59
remnants of the los janitos shipwreck
1:02
and that's where we'll continue our
1:04
story
1:11
there was yesterday and there was rain
1:14
beauty in the mundane
1:19
and as the light
1:22
startled our eyes
1:27
[Music]
1:31
and now
1:32
[Music]
1:34
there's something in the air

[Music]
1:43
the charming little town of bara shares
1:45
the sandy shores of bahia de navidad
1:47
with its sister town of malaki two miles
1:50
to the north
1:51
bara's cobblestone streets are lined
1:53
with cafes restaurants and tiana's that
1:56
sell a nice variety of provisions
1:58
even though the cruisers from tinicata
2:00
can stock up easily in la manzanilla
2:02
most will take the short trip to bar to
2:04
top off their pantries
2:06
most likely because fuel propane and
2:08
basic services are available here
2:11
we would take a water taxi to shore
2:13
every couple days to enjoy a walk down
2:15
the town's malecon with spectacular
2:17
views of the bay and just wander around
2:20
soaking in barra's unique vibe
2:24
we are an exhausted crew right now
2:26
because we just got back from
2:29
what was supposed to be a short hike to
2:32
a secret beach that our friends
2:34
caught us onto and we jumped on that
2:37
because obviously we have been consuming
2:39
one too many pastries from jc so we need
2:42
to work off those calories thank you
2:45
lynn's boyfriend
2:47
anyways
2:48
so what was supposed to be a short hike
2:51
uh ended up being double what we
2:53
anticipated because we were stopped by
2:56
a security guard and he diverted us
2:59
around the golf course instead of
3:02
us cutting through which added another
3:05
two miles
3:06
and i did not plan well i only brought
3:09
one water bottle and one apple to share
3:12
between the three of us and it is
3:14
blistering hot out right now
3:17
so
3:18
we're back and it was actually really
3:22
worth it because those views were
3:24
amazing just spectacular
3:28
as we approached the secret beach
3:30
entrance we were all surprised to see a
3:31
staircase carved into the cliffside that
3:34
wrapped a few hundred yards around to
3:36
the elusive beach
3:50
the walkway was impressive with bump
3:51
outs along the way to give you amazing
3:53
vantage points to view the crashing
3:55
waves of the pacific
3:57
this little slice of heaven gives off a
4:00
surreal feeling like we just stepped
4:02
back in time where life was
4:03
uncomplicated and untouched
4:06
as we neared our destination a few local
4:08
fishermen could be seen off in the
4:10
distance but they were just finishing up
4:12
their work day and we're packing up
4:14
which gave us the entire place to
4:16
ourselves
4:23
the crew from simplicity joined us for
4:25
this excursion which gave emma a
4:27
cruising friend to walk and talk with
4:36
we ended up staying for a few hours
4:38
swimming and exploring
4:40
we pooled and then shared our meager
4:41
rations preparing for the sweaty return
4:44
hike back to the lagoon
4:47
after our day i think it's time for us
4:50
to just decompress and just relax for
4:52
the rest of the day
4:54
did someone say pool time
4:57
we can go to the pool
5:01
now you have energy
5:03
yes
5:05
it's nice to have a few friends in the
5:07
moreno puerto de navidad because they
5:09
invited us over to spend time with them
5:11
at the grand bay resort's amazing
5:13
complex
5:14
i spent part of each day swimming at the
5:16
pools did i mention that they're
5:18
connected by water slides so cool
5:22
[Applause]
5:26
we got our daily exercise while our
5:27
parents hung out poolside figuring out
5:29
route plans for upcoming passages
5:32
i had so much fun here and look forward
5:34
to visiting this area again
5:38
[Music]
6:02
the sale from bara to tenecottito was
6:04
forecast for light winds from the
6:05
northwest
6:07
our plan is to sail the entire leg
6:09
taking advantage of the morning offshore
6:11
breeze and rounding roco blanca as the
6:13
winds flipped onshore around noon
6:15
as predicted the winds were light as we
6:18
leisurely drifted into bahia tanakatina
6:21
making this 15.5 nautical mile journey
6:24
nearly a half day event
6:38
as we rounded roca centro on our
6:40
approach to the anchorage we put the
6:42
wind to our port beam and picked up a
6:44
bit of speed which feels nice as a
6:46
crowded anchorage is surely launching
6:51
so that's right we dropped the anchor
6:53
and tanakatita yeah we're back it's just
6:56
because we couldn't get enough of this
6:57
place obviously actually there's good
6:59
reason why we are back in tanakata you
7:01
know we were having fun in bara but
7:04
the season is
7:06
coming to an end
7:07
when you cruise this coast
7:09
winter time is the best time to be here
7:12
and you have to start making decisions
7:13
on whether you're going to keep going
7:15
south you're going to hunker down for
7:16
hurricane season on this coast or you uh
7:19
head up into the sea cortez
7:21
we've decided we're going to do the sea
7:23
cortez and so we're going to start
7:26
heading north but we're heading north
7:27
for other reasons right now right
7:29
because typically at this point you're
7:31
still cruising the the pacific coast of
7:34
mexico um but
7:36
our visas are about to expire yeah we
7:39
have about one month before they expire
7:41
a little bit less than a month and so
7:43
at this point we have to decide how
7:45
we're going to get out of the country
7:47
renew our visas and then get back here
7:49
to basics so
7:51
we've decided that we are going to sail
7:53
back to banderas bay and fly out from
7:56
there there's a lot of direct flights so
7:58
that's just the best option for us right
8:00
now yeah we we could have flown out in
8:01
other places but
8:03
they're complicated expensive very
8:06
expensive they route you in crazy
8:07
directions
8:09
uh puerto vallarta makes the most sense
8:11
for us right and then at that point we
8:13
can also see family i haven't seen
8:15
family in a long time right and um also
8:19
we need vote parts there are some things
8:21
that you just can't source down here so
8:24
we are we have a long list of things
8:26
that we are bringing back
8:28
to get um basic back into tip top shape
8:32
because
8:33
captain here
8:35
has been very um
8:37
relaxed on my duties no you he was very
8:40
optimistic that we could uh work and
8:42
travel at the same time but it's uh you
8:45
know
8:46
we're getting some things done but not
8:47
enough we need to just hunker down and
8:49
get some stuff done because when we go
8:51
up into the sea
8:52
it's going to be a lot of fun and who's
8:55
going to want to do both projects
8:56
they're going to do that because we are
8:58
prepping our boat so then that
9:00
eventually we can do the south pacific
9:02
crossing right so this is hear that i do
9:04
that's those jack kerval swimming around
9:06
us anyway so yes so we have a lot to do
9:09
um
9:10
we are heading back up north now
9:14
um and then putting our boat into a
9:16
marina while we fly home and this is the
9:18
first time we're on a schedule i know
9:20
think about this we have basically we're
9:22
flying out a little over two weeks so we
9:24
have to have the boat in a safe place
9:26
which we've already made reservations at
9:28
paradise
9:29
uh so we have to be there on a
9:31
particular day which is weird we're on a
9:33
schedule we have to be there i think
9:34
it's funny that we made reservations at
9:36
paradise i know
9:38
paradise this is all paradise but
9:40
yeah we're gonna go into a marina and
9:42
just leave her there while we go home
9:44
and then at that point um we're gonna
9:47
get back and do a quick haul out yep
9:51
yeah so it makes sense for us to do the
9:52
haul out here we're premature on hauling
9:54
out we probably shouldn't don't need to
9:56
haul out for another month or two or
9:57
maybe three right but with catamarans
10:00
it's a little difficult to find yards
10:01
that
10:02
can handle the the width yeah and in
10:05
banderas bay they have a great haul out
10:07
facility in la cruz that can handle us
10:09
and it's a nice yard nice people so
10:12
we're gonna do a quick haul out uh just
10:14
spiff up the bottom paint do
10:16
a zinc service the sale drives and uh
10:18
just kind of check out how things are
10:20
going under on the understanding it's
10:22
gonna grow a lot faster down here than
10:24
it did
10:25
back up in the states for sure for sure
10:28
so we're gonna
10:29
do that and then start bouncing north
10:32
it's time uh all the other cruisers are
10:34
all kind of buzzing about heading up in
10:36
the sea emma's got a ton of friends uh
10:39
now and they're all going that direction
10:41
so it's going to be a good time for us
10:43
spring and summer for us and then at
10:45
that point we'll work our way back over
10:46
here and um
10:49
either go through uh panama canal or do
10:52
the crossing so yeah super excited lots
10:54
of things to do and yeah and the future
10:57
is wide open um we'll see yeah so that's
11:00
what our plans are uh bear with us
11:02
there's going to be a lot of boat
11:04
projects
11:05
and possibly some thickened epoxy in my
11:07
future
11:09
with no doubt
11:13
[Music]
11:23
he runs out drying off the decks here
11:26
we have a little weather window
11:29
for us to start
11:30
jumping north
11:32
it's this time of year it's rare about
11:34
one
11:35
day out of uh
11:36
seven to ten days the wind will clock
11:38
around out of the south today's our
11:40
window
11:41
so we're going to get a
11:43
early start
11:44
we're heading up back up to chamela
11:46
chamela's
11:48
about 28 miles north of here
11:51
so we should have a nice little run
11:53
i don't think it's enough time for us to
11:55
make it all the way up into banderas bay
11:57
so we'll go to uh chamela plenty of
11:59
places to explore there and we'll have
12:01
fun for a week
12:02
hopefully less than that
12:04
waiting for that next little
12:06
south wind
12:08
but we're not alone this anchorage will
12:10
clear out this morning when you get
12:12
these opportunities people move
12:14
so you'll see everybody
12:16
start to jump it's that time of the year
12:18
where everybody wants to start heading
12:19
north
12:21
[Music]
12:27
okay you ready kid yep
12:29
i'm gonna miss tina katie though
12:48
[Music]
13:02
but the next stop will be fun too yeah i
13:04
just hope that we can get there uh
13:06
before everybody else does so then we
13:08
can score ourselves a nice little spot
13:13
goodbye tanakata
13:18
it's always fun here
13:42
so
13:48
we're getting pretty close to the
13:49
anchorage the autopilot's on right now
13:51
and we are 2.6 zero nautical miles away
13:55
from it and we're going around four and
13:58
a half to five knots right now so
14:00
we'll be there soon
14:10
okay we are now in 19 feet of water the
14:14
tail is gonna start dropping the anchor
14:56
when you come to a screeching halt you
14:57
know you're good
14:59
[Music]
15:29
[Music]
15:31
well it looks like we're going to be
15:33
here anchored
15:34
off of perula
15:36
in the northern bite of bahia chamela
15:38
for the next few days
15:40
the weather's just not cooperating it's
15:42
a little snotty out there
15:44
and
15:45
the run from here
15:47
to banderas bay up around cabo coriantes
15:50
is no joke it is uh
15:52
notorious for big currents uh hence the
15:55
name cabo corientes
15:57
and big winds
15:59
we're gonna wait for the right timing
16:01
the winds predominantly are out of the
16:02
northwest right now and today they're
16:05
blowing 15 to 25 out there which means
16:08
around the cape it could be blowing 30
16:10
to 50 percent more than that
16:12
so we'll hang out here we're not in a
16:14
big rush
16:15
wait for the right window it looks like
16:16
it's coming we're waiting for the winds
16:18
to clock around about once a week they
16:21
tend to just stall out and maybe get a
16:24
little bit of push from the south and
16:25
that's our that's our window we'll jump
16:27
in and we've seen it happen over the
16:29
last couple of weeks timing wasn't right
16:31
for us but
16:33
we're looking for that window now
16:34
but for the meantime we'll hang out here
16:37
along with
16:38
a dozen other cruisers they're all
16:40
waiting for that same window
16:44
it's not a bad place to hang out
16:46
i mean we're in a nice protected
16:47
anchorage wind was blowing uh pretty
16:49
good all day and uh we're just solid so
16:53
i think we'll have some fun here
16:56
thanks for watching this week's episode

17:18
see you then
