Building a cruising sailboat It's finally time to start fitting the engine in the boat, and the first job involved in this is to securely fit the engine bed....

oh hi everyone
you have been a very active week I've
had a few days holiday so I've tried to
use that to the best of advantage best
advantage and the main I've done bits
all over bird actually I've done bits
all over but the main thing I've been
concentrating on this week is getting
the engine bed fitted and it's something
that's I've been thinking about for a
long time as these boats are designed by
by J Benford they're designed to be
fitted with a so drive unit they come
respect for a Yanmar engine and the sole
drive I've gone for a volvo penta sole
driver i don't think the brand of engine
makes any difference but designed to be
fitted with a soul drive unit but what
you don't get is any details on how to
fit a sell drive unit to these boats and
I research all sorts of things online I
spend a lot of time online read enough
about things and also online I film very
very little about how to fit a sell
drive engine to a to a hard trying boat
and particularly to apply with boat so
it took me a lot of thinking to come up
with a plan that's how the best fit the
sell drive engine to this boat and and
perhaps I'd go back a bit further when I
bought the engine I got a second hand
with the sail drive and when I was
looking into engines to buy became clear
that it's best to for a sell drive
engine it's best that it comes with the
manufacturers engine bed because we're
the so drive unit goes through you need
that watertight seal and the engine bay
would give you that sorry then the
question is so that came it's a
fiberglass engine bed you do most in
earlier videos about that were there one
or two small issues but that's all good
resolved fire glass engine bed so how do
you fit a fire glass engine bed to a
plow boat
in such a way that it cannot possibly
move in any way it cannot crack it
cannot lead to leakage around that cell
drive unit so that's that took a lot of
puzzling and say I researched online
film very little about it so I shall
show you now how I went about doing it
or how I'm in the process of going about
doing it it's and I'm going for a sort
of belt and braces and more braces
approach I really do not want the thing
to move so it's potentially a big hole
in the bottom of the boat that that one
really doesn't want to leak so it's been
a long time thinking about it this week
I finally got into doing it and I
started my first thought I say belt
braces and braces approach the first
thing I wanted to do is to build a plug
that goes up inside that engine bed out
of wood plywood in this case that is
glued to the wood of the boat it comes
in an integral part of the boat and it
fits tightly inside the engine bed so
the engine bit can sit over top of it
and it locates that engine bed so that
engine bay cannot move side to side
laterally or fore-and-aft it keeps it in
position so that was my first job I
marked out some ply pieces five ply
laminates or one centimeter 10
millimeter 3/8 of an inch roughly thick
building up to roughly 2 inches 5
centimeters thick for this plug cut them
out the engine bed itself tapers towards
the top it's wider at the bottom and
narrower at the top so the ply pieces
that went up inside there to form that
plug they had the taper accordingly
which meant the first one I cut had to
be slightly smaller than that than the
subsequent ones so cut the first so I
made sure it went in there deep enough
and then use that to draw around and
mark out and subsequent ones each time
drawing it a little bit bigger than the
previous one I cut out five of those and
let's see how that went on but before we
get to that it's something that I'd like
to talk about
and that is you assume you mentioned
them before the the challenge coins I've
got mine on the key ring holder here
that's available from the s vck junk
store as well
the coins there are 12 YouTube boat
builders who issued coins they have made
a list
they are SP seeker Solon hora lady
Africa Tallyho finding Simon life on the
bold icon to Arabella rusty junk C
dreamer salt and tar and Brubeck rupak
each one of those YouTube boat builders
is issued one of these challenge coins
and I heard this week or last week that
Tallyho have sold all of their so well I
think 300 coins for each boat builder
were minted I believe I'm right in
saying and tell you how I've sold all of
theirs and I think I've probably sold
very few less than 20 I strongly suspect
I thought that the figures but in that
region I think less than 20 which
clearly isn't quite the same level of
performance why well Tallyho is is
rebuilding a traditional boat it's a
beautiful boat I'm building a new one so
it's a bit different and perhaps I'm
just rubbish at selling things that's
quite possible certainly not my forte
but this boat will need a set of sails
and every penny that are getting in
terms of returns proceeds from these
coins will go towards a sort of
professionally made sails Fort Apache
and not only am i rubbish at selling
things I'm also rubbish at sowing I'm
quite good all sorts of handicrafts but
sewing is really not my thing
it is possible I haven't practiced
enough but not I haven't tried at all I
have and I'm bad at it so the idea of me
sewing a set of sails really isn't a
good idea I'm gonna get them
professionally made and if I can sell a
few of these coins
most of these coins if I sell all of
these coins it will cover the price of
themselves that would be a marvelous
thing they're available on the SV seeker
junk store
you can buy them individually or in a
set and if you'd like support if you'd
like to support the patcher helper get a
set of sails the sv2 patch a challenge
coin I'll put the link to the s vck junk
store we can get the coins in the
description under this video

yeah and the other thing of course with
fit in the engine bed was was that the
circle drive goes down doesn't need to
cut the hole in the bottom of the boat
so I've got this lovely watertight boat
and it's a kind of big hole in the
bottom of it bottom of it which is which
is rather unnerving
and so I approach that fairly carefully
as you might imagine I'll show you some
film of it in practice I spend a lot
more time measuring and marking and
lining up where I wanted the hole to be
and then cut that hole through it it
puts our drive in because I wanted to
make sure or wanted to check how this
lower diaphragm fits in the circle of
the sail drive opening lowered I come
over and just sort of have a look at how
it fits in there in fact it fits
centrally in the circle which was good
to know so what I want to do next is to
make a template for the opening for the
whole put a cut in the bottom of the
boat and at that you know a diet and
fitting

so I need to make a template to guide
the router to cut that size hole the
router has a raised bit that you can fit
into follow a template a guide and I
needed to measure the distance between
the edge of the router bit and the edge
of that guide which was five millimeters
so that hole needs to be five
millimeters bigger as a template the
template hole needs to be five
millimeters bigger than the actual hole
lit cutting so just mark top five minute
is all around using this the hand of the
marking gauge technique

fitting it's been quite a long process
and split it up over over a couple of
videos this is part ones I say thanks
