This is the story of the building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. The videos are a week-by-week record of the buil...

i all sv2 betcha I'm Tony
we're building a cruising sailboat this
video log of that construction we
started at the very beginning with a
lofting put it together step by step and
we're now just over two and a half years
into the build we've got a boat
they're just sort of fitting it out now
I'm getting very close to doing some
exterior paint work and I should be
ordering the the epoxy primer certainly
in the next week or so and I imagine in
well within two weeks were stopped on
the exterior paint so it's a very
exciting stage of the build but for now
we're still fitting out inside trying to
make it nice
[Music]
but the first thing you'll probably
notice is Terry stands there
visit we had entirely accession and
that's the the tiling all the time is
going in is now done leader on with the
class of multi Jeanette this is this is
the glue that I used for the year tiling
and it's something for me
that's probably knew it some polymer
based glue flexible waterproof and the
thing that made it particularly
attractive was that in the spec tree it
said that it sticks to epoxy coatings
and also with the idea that it will
probably be okay to glue that the PVC
flooring in the his and yesterday
there's a lot of test pieces a bit of a
bit of that PVC floor adjusters kept
scrapping a scrap of plywood
you see I stuck it on there and and
two-phase that stick pretty damn well so
that's quite quite a successful test I
would say and I've got enough left over
from the tiling to do the PVC flooring

you
I'm not an expert Tyler by no means but
I've done a few bits and I did work with
a very very good Tyler once as a laborer
he was the Tyler I certainly don't claim
to be a great Tyler but it's quite warm
please read all of all comment on this
is Adam when I when I was working with
that Tyler I just mentioned he extolled
the virtues of expensive tiles or when
he cut at our knees you know cut
beautifully because it was expensive
time and it's a hard like cream
it was his favorite same and it cut
nicely we say almost always did well
these tiles are not cheap but perhaps
the giveaway is so if you're gonna be
able to read it I'll hold up to the
camera can you read that
possibly it says the magic words made in
Thailand
yep I don't mind not all time product I
don't mean that at all written perhaps
suffice to say that these aren't the
easiest targeted cut so I come with a
standard tile cutter and some of them
came out well quite a few didn't which
meant I was down to lift nipple looking
with the pincers after that clearly you
can have a very expensive tile cutting
machine which is basically the table saw
with a dharma wheel on it or ceramic
wheel on it but I haven't got one old
school which is the way is is kind of
the way this boat has been built wasn't
it it's pretty much largely anyhow old
school but in it so I'm captain old
school with a tile cutter and then if
they don't cut properly I'm done with
with pincers but they come out well they
come out a little bit of patience please
do that and on that topic you might
remember yeah if you've watched all of
these videos you've seen some the old it
was I had a few tongue tip Tony's talk
tips which were all a bit a bit
tongue-in-cheek if we're honest the
tongs are shown but well I was honest
though that
as I showed other tools I have and the
tours I've used I've bought very very
few tools for this program but really
the point that those talk tips wasn't to
recommend any of those particular tools
it was just to show you the tools I've
got and I used this Bogle and the point
behind it was that you really don't need
expensive quality tools from a one-off
boat build you know it was a pretty
ordinary kid that's a no need to invest
in a tireless table sore unless you're a
professional toddler that's a different
matter if you just do a little bit like
I do a little bit now and again I will
school it's fine let's cut it
[Applause]
[Applause]
you
very minor job but we've got that one of
the grasslands in there first at the
cabin lights still waiting on them
there's we swept the floor Eric
[Music]
[Applause]
you
so we've got the stove out with a boat
in hand started giving it a cleanup
obviously dismantle bit first
good I'll scrub to get a part ready for
some renovation work needs a few bits
and pieces clips and screws from a stove
top you need to be new probably need a
new exhaust out on there and put a bit
of fire cement around the belt generally
just looking pretty good that seemed
good Nick
I just cleaned up quite well pleased
with it depression
[Music]
something about that they're quite a
simple thing these the oven you've got
what you've got with these if you're not
familiar with the Dickinson it's got
this I haven't cleaned the diesel valve
yet but these are valve covers we carry
mounts on the side of the stove this is
a very simple thing it's got a float
valve in it that sets the level of
diesel in there it's it's the level of
diesel down here it's a little level of
diesel to be roughly speaking level with
the top of that pipe there the top of
that pipe is joined into this pipe here
so the diesel level was there on the top
of that goes one of these this is just a
copper block with a pipe coming out of
it it sits on that pipe in the stove
there you put something in there to get
it burning and that warms up the copper
obviously then the diesel expands a bit
and atomizes through the air comes down
and starts burning completely simple
it's very little to go wrong with them
so burns the diesel in there then also
the lids on here and the exhaust and the
heat has to travel over this way down
there so it's all around this oven box
basically and out the vent out through
the exhaust out here and you've got the
option you've got a flatter to bypass
out if you
would you say or for lighting perhaps
when that shot is traveling all around
the oven box and that goes it's a really
really simple you've got a small
electric fan in the bottom they're
puppets it's all electric fan in the
bottom that you can use when lighting or
if you really want to fire it up and
that just fits to control love with free
I imagine the resistors are a bit newer
these fits to a controller with three
resistors of it pre through very
old-fashioned resistors on it with
sample the beauties on it it just gives
you three speeds reach speeds controller
for the bank really you could barely
beat similar very nice I was cleaning up
well please a bit I've contacted to
supply for some spare parts they're
going to get back to me I put it today
and get some spare parts on orders get
it back together and
[Music]
but falling down in there in the hits I
took a chance with this I've used the
same adhesive that I used on the tiles
and whilst for the tiles is fine I did a
test piece and they seemed to stick but
it was a small test piece and the chance
I've taken this way that this glue will
actually dry off because it's a moisture
curing adhesive and it's between a liner
of PVC and epoxy boards there's a risk
involved
we will not deny that is down it seems
to be okay it's not completely set off
but the spec sheet is seven days to a
funkier for this Blues we will say if it
comes out or if I end up ripping it up
and doing it again hotel and then for
now it's down obviously needs some
tidying up around the edges but it's
looking pretty good
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
[Music]
