After constructing the forward mast step platform last week, this week is all about the forward mast step itself. It's in and looking good!
This is the story of the building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. The videos are a week-by-week record of the build as it progresses and aim to show as much detail as possible of the various aspects of the build.
These videos take a lot of time and effort to make, in what is already a time-intensive project. Your support in watching, subscribing and sharing these videos is very much appreciated. You make a real difference!!

and painted all so recently
i sit and wonder what we seem to know
how we sure

[Music]
i'm tony we're building a cruising
sailboat
and this week um the progress has been
all about the the forward mast step
on the junk rig um in case you're not
sure
uh a jump ring the master free standing
that means they don't have any of those
those wires the shrouds and the stays
that hold the mast up
the master held up purely from from two
places
one where it passes through the deck
it's called the partners
and the other one down the bottom of the
mask the mask comes through the deck
and sits on the keel and down at the
bottom of the masters i think with the
the mast step okay so it's located in
the mast step
it goes up through the partners and that
holds it up just stands up from there
and obviously the master has to be solid
enough and strong enough to
hold the force of the soils
this is the the main mass this boat's a
schooner which means that the main mast
here in the middle of the boat
is taller than the forward mast it's got
two masts
um this is the main mast as i said and
the mast step here
isn't in place yet but it will be very
easy because
when i framed the boat i put
that framework in that the mast that put
fit in so it just needs some solid
douglas fur
to make the square for the master very
simple
um but the forward one is a lot harder
and uh if you imagine the forward one
you know the boat comes
to a point at the bow end it's also got
the knee that supports the
stem to the bottom of the boat that
comes down an angle there
and you have to make a solid platform
on which you can build the mast step and
you'll probably remember that that's
what i did last week i made the platform
and this week's been all about making
the actual step that the square
the heel of the mast sits down into
and uh as i say given the shaping is
it's a much more complicated
process than this main last step

project
as little as one dollar a month on
patreon
a few um few sort of behind the scenes
videos over there on the patreon site as
well
and they'll be ongoing i tried to get
one up every two weeks i've only started
fairly recently
but yeah they're up there they're open
for everyone to view
so if you feel like it get over onto the
patreon site s vita patcha

[Applause]
uh
[Applause]
first
[Music]
uh
how
thank you
[Applause]
ready
wow
something like that
look at that that is beautiful
yeah here it is um in here and it's
built up of multiple layers of half inch
ply
with the square cut out in them and i've
epoxied them to that
to that base that i made last week and
put a number of
bronze screws through so i think i put
two layers down and then three bronze
screws through that
another three layers and then four run
screws through
all of those seven button screws pass
through into the base
then i put the rest of the layers on and
another four bronze screws through there
but they
only screw it together they don't pass
through the whole
stack but there it is
and there's the dummy mast in place the
angle is approximately right
and i'm very pleased gonna drain the
hole down the bottom here
in case any any moisture falls again it
goes down in there
drains through the bottom just needs
some paint really now
it's all done please
that's it for this week thanks for
watching give us your
thumbs up hit that subscribe button
please
and uh we'll be back next week i imagine
getting on with the partners the fitting
for the partners got
various materials in to be getting on
with i've got the lining
that's going between the frames and the
forecast
quite a bit to be getting on with and uh
we'll see what we get done
see you later bye
