The pulpit gets some adjustment in preparation for mounting; the sole boards get lifting eyes, along with some varnish frustrations; we sail out into the North Sea and through to the Baltic.
This is the story of the building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. The videos are a week-by-week record of the build as it progresses and aim to show as much detail as possible of the various aspects of the build.
These videos take a lot of time and effort to make, in what is already a time-intensive project. Your support in watching, subscribing and sharing these videos is very much appreciated. You make a real difference!!

what it's about
[Music]
hi i'm tony this is esv
patcher we're building a cruising
sailboat and
let's have a look get straight in there
this week i think um and here we are
the bell pulpit um something i've been
working on
thinking about this week made a couple
of adjustments first of all these
these feet at the front were at the
wrong angle so i had to
cut them off and re-weld them on get the
angle right
and then also fitted
four brackets on here and that will
serve to fit a bigger
seating area there so it's possible to
sit at the bow
i'm not sure if it would be possible to
face forwards it's a bit
narrow through there for people with
um certainly face out aft or kneel on
there and look forwards
dolphin watching or whatever you know so
the plan is to put a antique seat on
there
i've got some 316 stainless and cut it
and welded those brackets on there
coming on thinking about mooring cleats
i've got a couple of cleats
some big old bronze cleats and just got
some stainless
similar size again three one six
thinking about um mooring cleats and
positions
still under thought that one
and the bowel pulpit itself will be will
be fitted
i've ordered the bolts for it so waiting
for the bolts to arrive
but it's ready to go but these these aft
feets come down which is under my finger
there and just off the camera shot i
think
where they come down is nicely in the
four peak nicely tucked out of the way
and see here these are the the wires
for the nav lights so they're all nicely
integrated
and that goes straight through under
these feet well sealed
and looking forward to fitting that soon
as the screws arrive
she'll be actually mounting it

and here we are down below and
as you can probably tell all the cabin
soul boards are in position
these two here aren't finished and and
the problem is i've run out of varnish
needed just two coats short
of that varnish and i've used a
different varnish on the sole
what i've used everywhere else
everywhere else is epiphanes
in the soul i've used this um
varnish claims to be a boat varnish but
four soles you know
um and i've run out now i bought the
varnish on amazon
a two and a half liter can and i don't
want to buy another two and a half liter
can just to finish two coats on those
two boards
so i looked at the company's website and
they sell one liter cans on the website
they don't sell them on amazon to one
liter can
but they sell them on their website and
i've ordered one
and i ordered it two weeks ago and it
hasn't arrived
and i've written the company two emails
now and they haven't answered
and i can't say i'm very happy with them
you know if you want to sell stuff
people
at least answer your customers emails
so yeah there i am being grumpy waiting
for a can of varnish to arrive so i can
finish the last two boards
hope he does one day

hey what's going on here
rocket recording english rocket i think
but i don't know what they call it
elsewhere
that's good run into flower though so um
yeah yeah i don't know
um let's have a look
yep there it is yeah that's right
and the zucchini looking great aren't
they
beautiful
last weekend we took a sale on hazel's
boat actually the same trip that we did
last year from
uh where she has had our home base up
till now
in billabo's half and on the on the
german north sea coast
and the german bikes at the north sea
and i remember you know when i was a kid
the shipping forecasts would come on the
radio and and
they should name all these areas around
the
around the the coast of britain
going a fair way out german bike was
always one of those
it's kind of interesting to be sailing
in german bite
so anyhow yeah we left the villains half
and and sold around
now it's very very shallow water there
um along that
german coast it's what they call the
buttermir
so it's uh sort of mud flats title
drying out you may know from the riddle
of the sands that book
the film um so you have to go quite a
long way at the sea
to to have water that's deep enough so
quite a big
loop around and up into the river elbow
which is the river that runs up to
hamburg and then on
basically into the czech republic runs
right through germany right down to the
south east of germany
into the czech republic i think it
changes its name somewhere along the
line but
um we only went a short way up there
although you know it's a big river
and very tidal um short way up there and
into the
keel canal there's a lock into the canal
and that keel canal is a as a 100
kilometer or to be precise
97.5 kilometer long
it's mainly marked in half kilometer
steps along its banks there's a section
that hasn't got the kilometer markings
depending on 97.5 kilometers long you
have to motor
you're not allowed to sell for it a big
old plug motor through it but it's
pretty
pretty uh there's a couple of places
that you can stop overnight and
not many but a couple and there's one at
the 20 kilometer mark so we stopped
there overnight got there
uh sunset on the saturday
uh having left at you know about six or
so in the morning
so sunset mid summer saturday we got to
the mooring place
20 kilometers in and the next day you
got up and and
continued through the canal and then you
come out
through the lock at the other end into
the baltic sea at keel which is
one of the great german sailing harbors
and it's
very very pretty and a lot of boats
around
i left her there and keel and she's now
off single handing on her adventures at
summer cruising adventures
heading up towards denmark that i think
as i sit here talking to you
today she'll be sending to denmark
good stuff unfortunately one or two bits
of this
video one or two clips have got a bit of
wind noise on them and and clearly i
need to invest in some
better microphone technology before we
set off into patcher
but hope you enjoy all right so
was it 6 30 in the morning six weeks
just before that night
by six we're about to get going
yeah leaving villains half and where we
going
uh
so we're going to go around out into the
north sea this is the
the yard or the jade bay at the
inlet off of the german bite of the
north sea
and we're gonna go around out into the
german bite the north sea
outside a couple of little islands and
then into the river elba
up there a little way and then if all
goes well of course
and into the keel canal yeah we'll just
just get a little way into the kill
canal today if it goes well
lovely morning sun's out
and it's a very very nice little hub
here there's the
the villains half and yacht club we're
on a
guest berth here
and it's very beautiful
[Music]
time to get going so
as you can probably tell we're
motorcyling so we'll look forwards
we've got the autopilot steering we
probably need to do a bit of adjustment
on that
for the reaction time just going past
the big
german naval base here power station
over there look
all the sights um
this is the yada or the jade however you
wish to pronounce it really
it's a glorious morning and we've got
paul saying that by saying motorcycling
went from a bath
pretty much it's lovely
let's see how the day develops
uh
the wind's picked up a bit we've got
probably a good 15 knots now i suppose
i'm guessing of course we're taking a
reef in the
main so which is the forward master
place which is a catch
um wind's a bit forward to the beam but
we're scooting along very well
very well and as we're passing the
approaching an hour after high water so
i suppose it's going to start to run in
our favor
now it accelerates
as time goes on i'm getting on very well
it's the number one marker
for the river elba the first of the
channel markers into the river elbow
and looks like we're around slack water
doesn't see much current around it
which is nice and his hazel on the helm
how are we doing
quite well that's warm so
we're not going too fast but that's
right yeah but we're going forward so
yeah so counts because there as you can
tell there
oh you can't because the flag's in the
way as you can tell there
is the number one boy that we've just
gone past so certainly going forwards
sailing into the elba
this green one is number seven doesn't
it
oh yeah
oh there's a ship coming in
four knots or something
[Applause]
foreign
my mistake
making good progress we're hoping to get
into the canal tonight
i'm saying very nicely keeping up with
him to up there pretty much
it's not too shabby we're in the keel
canal
i got through the lock it's all a bit
busy so i didn't get a chance to film in
any of the lock but we're in um
in time to get up there's a a mooring
spot about 20 kilometer
20 kilometers up the canal
that we're heading for so overnight let
me do the rest of it tomorrow
very nice busy lots of ships
there's a hazel ships
very busy
okay you can hear the motor running day
two
about eight ish in the morning i think
we're a bit late getting away it was
raining
to start with and we had one other
little problem that the
engine buzzer was coming on at lower
revs and turned out to be the alternator
belt that was a bit slack so to tighten
that up
looking good now and motoring our way up
the canal we're around
25 25 and a half in fact it's coming up
to the sign
and it started starting to clear up
brightest guys behind us come around
zoom that like that he's on the helm
smiling heavy
because there's a bit of a worry about
that buzzer wasn't it and it turned out
to be nothing really so
yeah that was very good
about the alternator belt yeah i did
yeah lovely and really you know just
getting out and doing these things is
such a delightful thing
brings you out into these morning lights
and that you wouldn't otherwise get out
in really
without some determination anyhow
quite a bit of boating around
a bit of bird life let's try and get a
bit of bird life for you later
looking good
[Music]
has begun
[Music]
she was kissed by the sun
no one can stop her now
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
and we've arrived in the keel bay
tied up at the public dock in holzen l
which is just the other side of the lock
coming out of the canal and it's very
beautiful
very beautiful indeed
hey what are you doing i'm just writing
my lookbook right in your logbook good
one
what do you think of the shipment it was
pretty good actually it was
yeah i thought the day up to the
uh canals
after the canal all right yeah it was a
great sound the canal is just a motor
through isn't it a bit of a plug plug
really
yeah it's pretty but but it's just
motoring on it yeah that's not
that big no the sail up the elbow was
actually most of the sailing from
villains half and second to the canal
was great
yeah motored for
but not much did we much enough remotely
an hour two hours at most
yeah yeah yeah very good
cool alrighty i've got to get myself
home get on the bus
leave you alone and that's it for this
week
thank you for watching give us a thumbs
up
leave a comment if you haven't already
hit that subscribe button please
and back to boat work most certainly
next week that's the end of my sailing
for a while
i'll be pushing on here hopefully
hopefully
getting that pulpit actually mounted and
have lights wired up
be nice to switch them on and see
glowing at night um
also thinking seriously or will be doing
the the aft
bullwork caps and the drain
in the uh in the day tank locker there
just in case any water gets in there so
it can drain out
those are thoughts still pushing on the
radar
doing a bit of glass and now and then
now and then just so you know there's no
rush on the rudder really but
just do a bit of fiberglass and every
now and again and we'll be
continuing with that no doubt hopefully
my varnish arrives
girl see you next time bye
