After years of researching and exploring ideas, I finally make a start on the ballast keel - a start which means those sleepless hours are finally over as I have now decided the technique I'm going to use to build the thing!
Elsewhere, I experiment with machining pieces out of rubber blocks and Karin completes the saloon cushions :-)
This is the story of the building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk schooner-rigged cruising sailboat. The videos are a week-by-week record of the build as it progresses and aim to show as much detail as possible of the various aspects of the build.
These videos take a lot of time and effort to make, in what is already a time-intensive project. Your support in watching, subscribing and sharing these videos is very much appreciated. You make a real difference!!

0:16
hi i'm tony this is s vita patcher we're
0:19
building a cruising servo it's a a j
0:22
benford designed sailing dory 32 foot
0:26
long basically speaking
0:28
and uh
0:30
this is the record of the build of that
0:32
boat
0:34
however we're here in the workshop not a
0:36
boat inside
0:39
but i've spent a lot of time this week
0:41
in the workshop and as you may see it's
0:43
kind of
0:44
morphed from what is basically a
0:46
woodwork shop into a metal workshop this
0:48
week and we're working on this
0:51
which is very very exciting it's the
0:53
start of the ballast kill
0:56
and
0:58
what you may see may
1:01
give a bit the game away what i'm
1:02
planning
1:04
i'm welding up this steel box it's five
1:06
millimeter thick steel plate
1:09
um and it's the size of the ballast kill
1:12
and will indeed be the ballast kill and
1:15
the plan is to fill this where there'd
1:16
be some intermediary plates in here to
1:19
stop it spreading but to fill it with
1:21
the lead ballast
1:23
fuel bolts coming out protruding out of
1:25
it obviously the plates that stop the
1:27
spread will also act as fixings or yeah
1:30
act as fixings for the kill bolts
1:33
and then we'll be filling it with lead
1:35
and this allows me to melt the lead in
1:37
batches which is something that i'm
1:40
particularly more comfortable with you
1:43
know i've watched
1:44
acorn to arabella and you know respect
1:46
their achievement there i've watched
1:49
doug
1:50
on seeker i've watched leo and his issue
1:53
that he had with melting lead i've
1:54
watched various other youtube channels
1:56
of people casting led to lead kills
2:00
and for me
2:02
particularly considering that here we're
2:04
here we're in a residential area it's
2:06
not an industrial site here
2:09
for me melting the lead in batches is
2:11
just much more comfortable it's much
2:13
more handleable it's something i can do
2:15
safely
2:17
without concerns
2:18
and that's the reasons for this decision
2:22
so be filled up with lead it will give
2:24
us the 1.3 tonnes of ballast that we
2:26
need i say with the bolts protruding out
2:28
to fix it on through the floors of the
2:30
boat
2:32
the steel box itself will remain and
2:35
will be treated like as though or a
2:36
steel boat put a couple of zinc anodes
2:39
on the outside
2:40
she'll be epoxy sealed completely on the
2:43
outside and treated as exactly as though
2:45
it were a steel boat
2:47
it should give it a good
2:49
life span
2:51
and there we go so let's have a look
3:16
six
3:51
get accurate
4:12
oh
4:27
[Applause]
4:28
that is amazing
4:38
[Music]
4:44
hello
5:09
i've just burnt out my trusty
5:12
metabo angle grinder and this is all
5:15
they had in the shop
5:17
craft tronic
5:19
because your confidence but
5:21
it wasn't very expensive
5:36
so look what we've got here
6:17
like that
6:32
comes over there like that and into
6:34
there like that
6:50
see that all that stuff in here
7:00
[Music]
7:49
so
8:09
[Applause]
8:49
[Applause]
8:57
[Music]

[Applause]
10:36
so
10:38
[Applause]
10:41
[Music]
11:13
oh
11:24
[Applause]
11:40
[Applause]
12:04

12:30
[Music]
12:37
[Applause]
12:43
[Applause]
12:43
[Music]
12:50
[Music]
12:56
[Music]
13:04
uh so
13:25
[Music]
13:26
[Applause]
13:40

13:54
what's up
13:57
[Applause]
14:08
so
14:29
[Applause]
14:31
i've done that
14:41
[Applause]
15:19
[Music]
15:57
so i'm welding with this with this i've
15:58
shown you it before with this little ipo
16:00
tools inverter welder stick rolling
16:04
and uh it's brilliant it gives you a
16:06
really good quality world it's easy it's
16:09
got they've got their what they call it
16:11
soft style or something it's cool
16:12
doesn't it
16:14
so it's really really easy to use and a
16:17
great little world i thoroughly
16:19
recommend
16:20
and coming on well i think
16:23
i bought some of these rubber blocks a
16:26
good
16:26
large solid rubber block because i had a
16:30
couple of little bits around the the
16:32
washboard the sliding hatch of the
16:34
washboard a couple of little gaps that i
16:36
wanted to block up and i just had this
16:38
idea that a piece of rubber fitted in
16:40
there solid rubber you know not a
16:42
flexible rubber
16:43
solid rubber fitted in there would be
16:45
good i thought i'd try it as an
16:47
experiment
16:48
well they come they've got this pattern
16:50
on the front
16:52
and i wanted to just experiment really
16:54
with the machine in it and i just
16:56
plained that off with that with the
16:57
bosch rechargeable you know
16:59
cordless planer and it played off
17:01
beautifully
17:02
absolutely beautifully and then cut this
17:04
to size on the table saw and uh marked
17:07
it out
17:08
and cut it then to final shape with the
17:10
japanese handsaw and it works really
17:14
well really easily works like wood
17:17
actually i sanded it with the sander to
17:20
get the finish drilled and count the
17:22
sunkits to fix it
17:24
and they've come out really well
17:40
[Applause]
17:59
[Applause]
18:32
[Applause]
18:38
good
18:49
uh
18:51
[Music]
19:33
[Applause]
19:39
wow
20:03
down below obviously on the chilly
20:05
morning
20:07
and karen's been busy she's hand sewed
20:10
all the ends of her cushions the saloon
20:11
cushions the five
20:13
saloon cushions she sat there
20:15
sewed them come out absolutely
20:17
beautifully tightened the cloth up that
20:19
little bit extra onto the onto the foam
20:22
i love the quality this foam is good
20:24
dense phone phone
20:26
and that's brightening the place up i
20:27
love the love the color you know it's
20:29
blue it's
20:30
obviously
20:32
perhaps not the most adventurous color
20:34
in the world but but i think it works
20:36
really nicely with the wood
20:38
and white paneling and i'm happy
20:42
we'll get on to we're going to do the
20:43
quarterback next and then move on to the
20:46
v birth lastly
20:49
i won't film very much
20:55
things go wrong
20:59
and that's it for this week
21:00
thanks for watching
21:02
give us a thumbs up leave a comment or

21:15
on the patreon page
21:17
um
21:18
which are accessible to all but um you
21:20
know a few other thoughts and background
21:22
details of whatever
21:24
behind the build
21:26
and uh
21:27
there are
21:28
there are actually four tiers of patrons
21:30
from as little as one dollar a month if
21:33
you
21:34
feel that support in
21:36
